Default Swede & Low...

Finally decided to join - I seek the help of the lowlifes in getting my Saab 900 looking a little better.

The car is a 1987 Saab 900 Turbo convertible, heavily modified for performance. I bought it basically stock 9 years ago in high school, and since then it has gone through quite a transformation - going from 160bhp stock to 400bhp (335whp) along with many interior/exterior changes and lots of rare Saab parts including the European-option Airflow kit. The car was featured in Eurotuner magazine in March of this year.

However I am done with pushing the performance envelope - I've got more power than the front wheels can handle as it is. And as I frequent car shows I find myself jealous of all the low, stretched & poked cars getting all the love. I'm interested in lowering the car further, picking out some rare wheels and a mild stretch to tuck them under those fat wheel arches.

Form has followed function pretty much the whole time I have owned the car, and it's time to change that. That's what brought me here!

If you're interested, here's the ET feature:

And various pics I like, copyright Sam Dobbins:

And a few I've taken:

Don't know how I overlooked this... love that you took a platform few are willing to even attempt to modify. Seems like you are gonna have to get creative on getting it low, comfortably. I'm having to do the same with my new project... makes it all the more fun. Start a build thread once you got a plan of attack for getting it low.

Thanks for the welcome! I'll be doing a lot of reading here to learn all the little tricks - this side of modification is pretty new to me.

Ah, yes, getting creative will be the name of the game. A few of the challenges, for starters:
-Off the shelf parts are pretty much non-existent. No airbag kits, coilover suspensions, nope. I've got lowering springs and Koni adjustable shocks, that's as good as it gets.

-The 900 has TONS of front overhang, very long nose past the front wheels. That means a higher chance of scraping on everything, and the body kit is very rare and unavailable in the US. So running fixed height might not be an option.

-Wheels are hard to choose. The 4x114.3 bolt pattern is common FWD, but the car requires more of a RWD offset My best option looks like imported JDM wheels which typically have lower offsets, but come with combo 4 and 5 by 114.3 patterns.

That'd be great... I'm looking probably at the Work Euroline N for my next setup. But the Saab has been put on the "back burner" a bit due to my new project:

So far it has 16x8 BBS Style 5s ET23mm with 3mm spacers. H&R Race cut 1 coil front, Bilstein sports all round. Doing 15mm drop hats next and that's as low as I'm going.

Yo IronJoe! I need you to do something sweet so I can have more inspiration :P Ive finished constructing coils but I havent been able to put them in yet. If the shock mount can handle the weight of the car then this will become a great option for adjustable suspension for the c900, but Im thinkin if we really wanna go low were gonna have to stick with the spring/shock setup and raise the upper spring tower, which if I can find a friend who can weld is my next step..

Definitely man. The vert has been 2nd priority since I've been spending so much time on the M3.

My plan is to finish the M3 and show it for the rest of the season, then this fall/winter build up the Saab for 2012. I am planning quite a few new things.

But for now....

Forgot to update this thread.

Getting a little better now - on 18x8 forged Rays wheels. I eventually sourced the missing center caps.

Redoing the engine management right now, should make more power. Getting on the rollers again Sept 1st!
