  • Sir Stancelot's JDM Tyte Build Yo!(56k go make a sammich)

What it dew S|W! I'm finally making a build thread for my 83 Toyota Celica Supra that I've had for the last 6 years. Let me start off with a little back story on how this all started.

When I was looking for my first car in 2008, I wanted something fun and cheap but didn't really know what kind of car I wanted. I started off looking for civics and integras because I knew they could be fun cars. Lo and behold I was browsing Craigslist and found an 83 Celica Supra for sale. I knew what a Celica was, and I knew what a Supra was, but never heard of a Celica Supra. Went and checked it out and fell in love. It was an auto, but I didn't really care. I instantly fell in love with the body lines and the sound of the straight six.

What she looked like right after I brought her home.

I had a few little things to fix right away like a few vacuum leaks, missing fuses, and the broken tail light. But I loved it and drove it all the time. I always knew I didn't want to keep it stock, so I started looking up mods and such, and found some forums to guide me along my way. I quickly learned how much potential these cars have and the colt following and loyalty they have. So that's when I got bit by the MKII Supra bug and I was hooked!

Cleaned her up a bit and this is how she looked for a looooooooooonnnnnggg time. Mainly due to finances and other obligations I was never really able to do any serious mods until recently. The first thing I did to improve the car was a full brake service with new MC, calipers, rotors and stainless braided brake lines.

I realized I was becoming increasingly irritated with the automatic slushbox. I started seriousely searching for the parts necessary to do the swap. I was able to source all the important parts fir really cheap from a local guy. I then slowly pieced together the little pieces like the pedal assemblies and such from other MKII Supra owners and eventually had all the stuff I needed to begin. So, out that old sloppy bitch came!

My buddy Derek helping out cuz he has super human retard strength, lol!

Got that stubborn bitch out! The tranny fluid hard lines were the most difficult things to get out from around the engine.

The slushbox was a filthy whore.

Pedals mounted. For some reason they were really spread apart and I had to do a little tweaking and they lined up perfect.

All finished! Worked flawlessly with no other adjustments or re-do's needed.

Maiden voyage after everything was put back together.

Rocked it topless for a couple days for shits and gigs lol!

I loved how it drove with the 5 speed and I couldn't wait to get it out on some twisties and stretch her legs. Luckily there was a Bay Area Supra Cruise in a couple months that I was able to attend. We drove the historic Mines Rd and it was a perfect day of driving.

Fast forward a few months and I was itching to get more things done to my old girl. I was getting really tired of the stock stance and the feel of the baloony tires. I was also sick of the ride from the blown 31 year old suspension. So, back to research and looking for parts. First things first, I wanted new wheels and tires.

Picked these bad boys up from a buddy for a good deal. Diamond Racing Steelies 15x8 -25 and 15x10 -25.

I wanted to wait to put them on until I had my suspension done and the car sitting lower, but I got impatient, hahaha! Monster Truckin!

Couple months later it came time for greatness. I made a trip to a cool little shop here 30 minutes from my house and picked up some goodies.

T3 DIY front coilovers complete with camber plates and RCA's as well as KYB AGX SW20 MR2 shocks. I went with 550lb springs because I love the feel of a really stiff ride(that's what she said).

Around this time I had the opportunity to pick up a parts car from San Jose. And funny enough it was a black 83 P-type with an auto trans.

Here's it on the trailer with the owner who was also the original owner.

Unfortunately the car has a lot of rust and hasn't run in 10 years. and almost all the interior was missing, otherwise we probably tried to save it.

    The girls together.

Finally it was time to get started on the front coilovers. I should mention at this point that I only got the front ones cuz I'm poor lol. I used the strut tubes from the parts car to be cut and welded so I didn't have to havemy car down for weeks waiting for the welder to get around to them.

All assembled and ready to go in!

Dat rake doe! Before I cut the rear springs.

All Finished. Rides way better than I thought it would with the cutties in the rear. Hardly bouncy at all.

Rolling shots! On the way to a Old School Japanese car show.

At the car show. So cool having my car in a real event like this!

Picked up a Pignose 240sx front lip to put on it. Fits super good!

And this is how she sits now. I am very happy with how she looks and drives now, but I have much more planned. I still need to finish the suspension, need new bushings, rebuild the diff, and I currently have a 2JZGTE block that I plan on building over the next couple years. So, stay tuned because I will be providing plenty of updates!
    Cheers!

Thanks for the love guys! Unfortunately things have taken a slight downturn this week. My diff is on its way out fast. Its making some strange noises, and whenever I drive faster than 30mph it starts shaking violently. Pretty sure the pinion crush sleeve failed and the ring and pinion are eating eachother. So, my plan for now is to get an open diff from a Cressida and get it welded. This way I'll still have fun and get my car back on the road for about half the cost of rebuilding the LSD. So, updates hopefully after this Saturday!
            Cheers!

Alright folks, time for a wee little update. So as I stated above, I was beginning to have some strange vibrations while I was driving at freeway speeds. It would start to vibrate at a high frequency at about 60mph and it would make a little hum sound at the same time. I knew it wasn't a wheel imbalance cuz my wheels aren't very balanced and wobble on the freeway all the time(deep dish steelie life yo!). So, I talked to a few car buddies and they said it might be the driveshaft carrier bearing. So, I changed it:

This is what the old one looked like. I thought for sure this was the problem! Look at that piece of shit! Super blown out. So I put the brand new one on and voila! The problem was still there. Fuck. Now I was beginning to think it was my leaky ass diff finally running dry on oil and the bearings were toast. The vibrations were starting to get even worse, and appearing at lower and lower speeds. So, off to pick 'n pull I went! There was an '88 Cressy at the local yard with only 67k original miles on it. Perfect! Grabbed that pumpkin out and got it home. I knew I didnt want to run an open diff cuz open diffs are super gay. So I started tearin that bitch apart to get it welded.

I soaked it overnight in a mix of pure indoustrial cleaner and vinegar. Then I took it over to my buddys place to get it welded up.

All done!! Slapped that shit back together, torqued it down, oiled it up and slapped it into the bae. Get in the car, start it up, drive down the street and voila!! Problem is still there. Double fuck. Now I just spent $100 replacing a diff that didnt really need replacing. But I did notice when I had the diff out of the car, the drive shaft U-joint at the end had a shitload of play and was making some squeaks and stuff. Luckily for me, I have a ballin ass parts car in my garage! pulled the drive shaft out of the parts car and it had beautiful U-joints at both ends. Slapped that shit in there and voila!! Prolem solved motherfuckers!

And I have to say, welded diffs are pretty dope. Sure it sucks ass in a parking lot or for u-turns, but i feel the car push super hard through corners and it feels terrific! I'm still a huge noob at drifting, so I'm gunna wait for the rainey season to pick up so I can practice, lol.

Another little update, my rear tires were bald as fuck on the inside from camber and toe wear, so I wanted to get them flipped. Took them to a tire shop, got them flipped, and came out the next morning to this:

Both sides totally flat. Boo. So, back to the tire shop and they hooked me up with a pair of Kumho Ecsta tires for $70 with 90% tread left on them still. And these bad boys are GRIPPY! Unfortunately they only had 205/50/15's so i have meaty fitment up front and little baby tires out back. But hey, ain't complaining for $70.
              Cheers!

Looking good. There's a small garage by my house and the owner is really into old Toyotas. He always has old Supras and Cressidas, and stuff around. I was thinking about talking to him to see if he'd sell me one but I ended up with a Miata instead.
