  • Project SmurfShark - BMW e24 Build

    Hello Stanceworks!!

I've been lurking for a few years admiring all of the awesome e24s builds here but I finally picked up one up 3 months ago and thought it was about time to make a build thread of my own. Here's my 1985 BMW 635csi Shark!

Little back story on the car. It was supposed to be one of Alpine Car Audios SEMA show cars a few years back. It was a week before SEMA, interior was done, suspension was done, engine still had some fine tuning to do, the car was being prepped for paint and then the plug was pulled on the project due to other project priorities. The owner then sold the car to his friend who then a while later sold it to me. Even after sitting for a few years, I was actually able to comfortably drive it from San Diego to Long Beach(over 100 miles) Since then the previous owner is still sending me boxes of parts. What a cool guy!

Here is a list of current mods

Engine: 3.5L inline-six, bottom end just rebuilt, Metric Mechanic HiFlo ST Head with Sport cam, Metric Mechanic ported exhaust manifold, Metric Mechanic overdrive oil pump pulley, big-bore throttle body, BMP fuel pressure regulator

Engine management: Motronic 059 ECU with Dinan Chip, Apex SAFC for minute adjustments

Clutch and driveline: Heavy-duty pressure plate, 6-puck solid-hub clutch disc with organic linings. 5 speed manual transmission (Getrag 265, Redline MTL) . 3.71 LSD (Redline MTL)

Suspension and Handling: Bilstein Sport shocks, H&R Springs, Racing Dynamics sways front and rear, KMAC camber/caster adjustable upper shock mounts (front), KMAC camber/toe adjustable eccentric bushings, aluminum strut braces front and rear, Paul Gray thrust arm bushings and lower arm bushings, aluminum lower arms, Earl's braided steel lines, All new Mehle suspension kit installed, e34 M5 brake upgrade

Interior: Completely redone suede and cloth interior

MODs to come soon: complete custom coilovers, Raceskids Skid Plate, Euro Clear corners, Solid red taillights with clear reverse, Custom bumper tuck to shorten bumper, front and rear lower valance, blacked out moldings

And what we've all been waiting for, pictures!

Driving it back from San Diego

    Seats reupholstered

After hours of body work...I did a lot of of the low grit sanding and primered it but left the final sanding before paint to my experienced friend Jose who works out of the Royal Crown Autoworks/Fuzion Teknique/NT Autobody and Paint Garage in Gardena

And an action shot of my shark being painted by Nelson at NT Paint and Autobody (www.ntpaint.com)

and done! The next full body shot I want to post of the car will be the final product after color sanding, buffing, custom coilover install and wheels!

The first thing I said after seeing the color on the car was SMURF! and now we have project SmurfShark!!

      Thanks doode!

I spent about 2 hours at the paint store deciding between Laguna Seca blue and 10 other blues and finally decided on this one.

        Woah, very cool!

In it's pre painted state, it was definitely a sleeper. What wheels are you going to go with?

Still debating on the wheels but nothing to crazy right now since I already broke my project budget on paint and other goodies.... maybe some ESM 007 OR 002R.

Very cool. But please don't do ESMs. Get those M-System wheels you have refinished and find some Throwing Star or Turbine covers for them.

I think that some white oem e46 M3 wheels would be killer on this, and you can find sets that need refinishing on ebay for pretty cheap.

I was feeling a little weird putting replica wheels on but then it's just the most bang for the buck right now but I'm looking at other options also.

Not the biggest fan of the throwing star look and actually haven't been able to find them any where.

I just was BBS RS reverse mounted which kind of intrigued me but 17x8 et-45 may be to much up front.

I know of a set of 18 inch rs with slants for 2600. They would look perfect on this.

I think I'm going to go for some budget friendly rims for now while I build some other wheels(If i ever decide on what I want)

Ive been keeping busy trying to put together my custom coilover kit. I gathered information from the e24 coilover DIY here, other forums and the guys at Ireland engineering.

I used the Bilstein Sport shocks that I already had (recommended by Ireland Engineering) and purchased honda coilover (450lb all around) setup which were used in the DIY. For more details on the install follow the DIY on page 2 on the link below.
Any and all suspension and coilover discussion goes here. Talk about how to get where you want to be.

Those top hats suck, broke as I lowered the car. Can't handle the weight of the e24

My KMAC camber/toe adjustable eccentric bushings,

Gave me an additional 1.5 inch of drop but will be getting shorter coils to get more low. Threw on my buddies BBS style 5's for fun (he doesn't know)

                            Before with H&R Sport

Hopefully I can get the other 3 on tomorrow and then let the buffing begin!!

Hrm...You're the second person that recommended turbines... I gotta look into those.

The color looks totally different after color sanding. Lets see what happens after buffing!
