  • 1990 Mazda Eunos V-Spec

Hi all, I thought it was about time I started a build thread of my own, after spending hours on here enjoying everybody else's.
My previous project was a mk2 golf, I loved that car and learnt a lot whilst owning it. I installed coilovers with static+ air upfront to help me on my daily driving, 14" x 8j Steffan BCW wheels, and a few early type19 parts to name a few mods. It was my first project, and one I thoroughly enjoyed.

Then summer came this year (A rare thing in the UK), and I got tempted into buying something a little faster, and more fun to drive, and topless. I've always loved miata's and had a strong desire to own one.
With a bit of luck on my side I flicked onto flebay in my lunch hour, and found a 1990 Japanese import Eunos Roadster V-Spec for sale that I could just about afford. The car just so happened to be 2 miles away from my house, so naturally I messaged the owner, and before I knew it I was home from work and out on a test drive. I liked the car, it was completely original, and most importantly, RUST FREE. I felt it was the perfect base for a project, being my favourite colour combination of British Racing Green with the Tan Leather Interior. It also had the 116bhp engine (as opposed to the de-tuned 90bhp one), and the long nose crank, so no worries about the woodruff key failing, and had an LSD etc, basically ticked all the boxes
Come Friday the auction for the car was due to end the following morning, and the owner of the Eunos rang me up, I had obviously made a good impression with him, as he basically said he wanted me to own the car, and would take it off ebay if we could agree a price. So a deal was struck, and a week later the car was mine.
*Buys a convertible, it instantly rains*

The original plan was to keep the mk2 golf, and put a 1.8 8v PB engine in (it only had a stock 1.3 motor), but once I started driving the Eunos, it just won me over. It was a sad day that I sold my mk2, but it meant one thing, that I could focus all my time, effort, money etc, onto the Eunos. This is where the fun begins 
The first thing that I did was make a billet aluminium gear knob on the lathe at work, as it was missing the original wooden nardi one.

I wanted to put my money to good use that I gained from selling my golf, so a set of MeisterR Zeta-S coilovers were purchased. I didn’t want to go down the route of budget coilovers again, I wanted to retain some of the 5’s great handling characteristics, whilst still being very low, and these coilovers are kinda designed to achieve that.

I got to work fitting them the following weekend, I lowered it a measly 50mm, but in all truth, there was no point in worrying about the ride height at this stage, as that would be dialled in later once wheels were added into the equation..

    The end result

Next up was wheels. I decided on a set of Bronze Rota Grid V’s, 15” 8j et0 all round. I like the clean lines of the eunos, and am hoping these slightly more aggressive looking wheels will throw a nice bit of contrast into the mix Tyres wise, I went with Toyo tr-1’s, 195 45’s. I wanted a subtle amount of stretch to help the wheels fit under the fenders, yet I wanted the tyres to still be wide enough on the wheels to compliment that bold look that I hope the wheels will add.

After rolling the rear arch lips flat, I bolted the wheels on. I also picked a hardtop up after work that day, it’s crazy how much the hardtop transforms the overall look.

This brings me up to date. Next up is getting the tracking and alignment done. At which point the negative camber will be increased and the coilovers will get wound down further to try and achieve the fitment that I’m going for. I’ve got lots of ideas and plans in the pipeline, and look forward to making them happen!
Apologises for the very long winded first post. I will get some better photo’s up when the weather picks up.
    All comments/feedback welcomed,
    Greg

I borrowed my girlfriends camera in an attempt to take some better photo’s today, so thought I’d share them.. Also stripped out the soft top today

Left this sticker on from the previous owner, kinda like it, it sums up my ‘5 ownership well

Thanks man Yes it does need to go lower, I've been waiting for the coilovers to settle before I got the c spanner out again. I'll give it a healthy drop one day after work this week!

Looking good so far, anything in the pipeline for power?

I think it would look better with a bit wider tyre for a more meaty fitment, dont do spacers please. Green on bronze is looks great

Thanks! Since going out in my mates turbo'd '5 and experiencing 260bhp I feel that I definitely need more power. Although I want to have a go in a supercharged one before I decide which way to go. I suspect next year I'll buy a second engine to rebuild with forged internals alongside driving this (its my daily), and go from there.

You're right, In hindsight I think slightly wider tyres would have looked better too. These may look a bit better once its lowered more, if not I'll just swap them out for something wider once they're worn out. It's a shame its not sunny in any of these photo's, the bronze looks awesome with some light, against the green

I just went to drop it some more, and the rear coilovers only went down another 8mm before stopping :/ For some reason I just assumed they would go lower as they looked like they had room to.. Oh well, I'll bring the front down to match, then look into getting some shorter springs. Where there's a will, there's a way

Take out both of the bottom locking rings. It'll give you alomost another 1". No worries its safe

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately the problem is with the coilover bottoming out in the lower cup it screws into so it can't physically go lower, whether it has the locking rings in or not, if you see what I mean.
Other than shorter springs, I can't see another way around this. It seems although these have a similar design to the stance or hsd coilovers, they just don't have the capabilities to go as low them

Hope everyone's had a good Christmas! Not too much has been happening with my Eunos recently. I went lower with the back, and the front a tad (until I've made a sump guard and can go lower). I think she sits a little nicer now. Also fitted new rear brakes. She's surviving daily duties well despite recently ticking over to 230,000km. I'm looking forward to setting the ball rolling again in the new year and making some plans happen

I swapped out the Nardi steering wheel today for a deep dished suede OMP Corsica. Although it doesn't look as fitting in the interior, it feels so nice to drive with that I was happy to put function before form on this one occasion.

Next up is to make a front lip/splitter to merge to gap between the bumper and the road (+ the sump guard and more lows as previously mentioned). Its pretty big at the moment despite how low the car is, which sucks.

I picked up an e36 today to be my new daily, and fell in love with it on the 70 mile drive home. Its a 318is, so its only got the 4 cylinder engine, not a straight six unfortunately. But the 140bhp feels enough for me.

I suspect I'll drop it on coilovers and add some wider oem BMW wheels. If I enjoy it more than the Mazda, I'll sell the Mazda to free up funds to make the Bimmer awesome, if not then the Mazda is going to be my summer toy and I'll save it from the salted roads we have in our UK winters.

Its done 140k miles, but it drives like a car that's done half that. The gearbox is as smooth as silk and the engine pulls really well! I'm stoked to be driving a BMW, that's for sure
