  • 1989 Jetta - nOEM

    Hi guys,

I had a build for my old car but it wasnt very good, I aim for this one to be much better!

I bought the Jetta in May, Story goes that I saw it parked up as I was Delivering Chinese. I left a note on the windscreen asking if it could be for sale, anyway the guy gave me a call the very same day asking if I want to have a look at it. So along I go, turns out its got no rust and only 66,000 on the clock. Its also an auto. The fella I come to buy it from is only the 2nd owner, he had bought it from an old woman who brought it across from ireland with her, hence the reg. Anyway, he had only wanted a cheap daily and after buying it had run into some classic cold-start problems stemming from the dreaded 2e2. He was extremely happy to pass it on to an enthusiast like me, especially with a years MOT and 6 months road tax! I was incredibly pleased with the condition of the car and the fact that it was 100% original, even down to the cassette holder and floormats.

However the car didnt seem to have been washed since it had left ireland and had accumulated a layer of thick roadgrime which made the paint like sandpaper to touch! Over the summer I spend a few long days with a MOP returning her to her former glory.

At this point, the summer holidays had ended and due to other (work) commitments, I hadnt ended up doing anything with the Jetta, I decided to put her up for sale. I had alot of compliments on the condition of the car but very little interest and sadly didnt get any offers which I could realistically accept.

So thats where I am up to now...

I must also add that I own 3 others mk2 "projects" in various states of decay and a fairly substantial hoarde of parts.

So with my Jetta not selling I reasoned that I may aswell keep it, therefore I need another source of funds. Most of my parts i had collected were destined for a Polar Silver CL which would be built into the car I wanted. Now that the Jetta is going to be my primary project, The CL will be recieving a fresh MOT and be up for sale to fund it.

In order to get the Jetta to where I want it to be, It has to undergo some changes, hence the title (No)oem The plans I have for it are not completely horrible but more OEM+.

    *Remove 1.6 auto.

*Clean and polish engine bay; remove battery, washer bottle and header tank.

    *Fit Hydro Pedal box.

    *2.1 16v (TSR Thruxton).

    *Replace interior with Recaros.

    *Fit Koni coilovers.

This is the first stage of the build, using only parts I already have. Later on I will be supercharging the 16v using an Eaton M62, this has been in the works for much longer than I have had the jetta and was the plan for my golf to begin with. I currently have the 16v running on Motronic from the corrado, I also have Digifant 1 from a g60 which will be used as soon as i buy a suitable fuel rail. Further on I will be upgrading to DTA and Doing all the mapping myself.

I currently have one set of wheels I had planned on using for the golf, 14" SSR mk1 fully polished. However I think 14" is too small for a jetta so they will be sold, possibly for something in 17" flavour.

Part of my hoarding has been buying a number of US parts, so the jetta will have US tails and plate tub, I will have at least one set of US golf tails for sale.

With plans now set in stone, I decided to get on with the swap. So a couple of friends and hours later...

Had to call it a night, didnt get as much done as I wanted but oh well. My mum is bringing a drill to make the hole for te clutch slave, aswell as a new soldering iron since i cant find mine.

Since this was a carburetted engine it didnt have a main or lift pump, or the necessary wiring. I didnt have a spare CE2 fuel pump loom, so I had to pinch a CE1 loom and lift pump from one of my other cars. It required a bit of plug swapping but nothing the great John Newman couldn't help with.

Obviously the fuel tank cover had never been removed before.

I think its pretty obvious which bit of wiring is mine :P

For the moment i have to use a kjet pump to run the motronic but once i change to electronic injection I will move it usin the mk3 tank and internal pump to tidy things up, The pump I had is very ratty but itll do for the moment, I changed the filter anyway.

The new Filter I had slipped around in the clamp, so i wrapped an old piece of inner tube round it to keep it still

Tomorrow hopefully Ill get the hydro clutch finished, loom finished, fuel pumps installed and engine bay cleaned.

Love to hear your thoughts, especially wheels wise!

eeing as the engine isn't going in for a while I decided I'd go to town on the bay. Not 100% sure how tidy it's going to go but it'll certainly get some fresh paint, and have pretty much bare chassis legs, perhaps a lonely catch can.

Compared to all the other bays I've had this one was clean to begin with. I assumed that a quick power wash would suffice. But it turned out all the dirt was there because it had stuck to puddles of waxoyl :/

            (Enter household cutlery)

Some hours, scrapings and thinners later, it is to a point I am somewhat happy with.

I still have to do the bulkhead, hopefully with less wax! Then the other chassis leg :/

It seems odd to me that VW would coat almost the entire upper chassis leg with waxoyl and barely put any on the side which would actually need it!

So after 3months of shipping. I had a package this morning.

              And boom!

Probably the least oem wheel you can get! I'm not too sure about 14s on a jetta, but I'm being swayed! Thoughts?

Very rainy day. But got the old loom pulled out at last.

Almost finished cleaning the bay. Need to grab the pressure washer from my dads and give it a blow over. Then need to buy a new vr6 clutch and get the engine in!

And here's a close up of the wing. The heatgun/rag technique works very well i must say.

Saw this up for sale a while ago, good to know you're going to look after her instead . Not a fan of the wheels and doubt they'll work but hey, prove me wrong . subbed.

Looks like I wasn't the only one who had "big plans" for the car.
I found a mouse living here. Doesn't look like he has chewed through any wiring yet but I better keep an eye out.

Not much of an update but picked up a couple pieces.

Bagyard bombers. These are replacing the cheapy bag over coils I already had.

I also picked up a black parcel shelf from LukeyBabes. I don't know if I'll use it yet but couldn't say no.

Im 50/50 on using these on the car. The last set of Original Boston edition Decals in the world.

Considering how clean the car is, I am really surprised that I didnt get any bites. Was for the best anyway.

Haha, They're already up for sale. Im pretty much set on a set of 17x7.5 A8 Monoblocks. Im gonna try to be the first (or one of) to lay frame on 17s. Much chassis butchery and most probably some VIP camber will be needed.

                          Not much of an update.

In the mean time, I got rid off the GTi spoiler, I had a couple of people asking about it but all I wanted was a boot without the mounting holes. So when someone offered to get one painted for me I couldn't say no.

The colour match isn't perfect but that's to be expected given that it wasn't painted on the car, but it's close enough to keep me happy for the moment.

I have had this NOS Hella spoiler for a while which I wasn't planning on running but I could be swayed.

No updates in a while. Been too cold to do much but I've just started cracking on.

I've finished cutting all the unwanted brackets out of the bay but no pictures for now.

Also had the dash out to fit the tilt steering column.

                            Old vs new.

                            Trimmed the dash to fit.

I'm missing a piece of trim, which looks like this.

Will get a pic of the finished article.

I've also picked up the rear bags, so suspension can go on as soon as I get time.

                            Along with a few goodies.

85 westy diesel center comsole, (actually black, just dirty)

Almost brand new limited edition ABT nardi wheel.

I also picked up a set of RM012s, which I have some unusual plans for but that can wait and see.

My RMs showed up today. They need some work but I plan on 2.0" dishes all round anyway.

I didn't get center caps with them, but I'm not worried. I plan on using a different style center cap.

If anyone has a set of dimple plates spare though that would be cool.

                              This was the worst dish.
