  • South African VW Citi Golf Conversion to Mk1

    Hi Guys

My name is Wade Lambert, I am a final year design student. I live in sunny Durban, South Africa. I have a 2001 Citi Golf 1.4i. In Durban the golfs are really riced up and over done, so I decided to follow a bit of a trend in South Africa and make my golf look more old school. I have had the car a year now and been really lucky with the parts I have found and especially being on a student budget haha.

This is how it looked when I got it:

I bought these cli rims because I really want to make them custom like a picture I found on this forum

I really want to fit the Mk1 Tail Lights but I need to fill up the holes

I then put my car on the dyno its made 62kw on the wheels and 120nm of torque

This is how it stands now, Im really happy with the progress I have made

    To Do List:
    Coilovers
    Make the Cli rims custom
    Fit the Tail Lights
Re-Do the interior (seats, roof lining, door cards and carpet)

    Future Plans:
    Full respray
    Possible 2.0 8v Motor conversion

Hey Tanel, they made the South African Spec Citi Golf until 2009

the body was the same as a mk1 just slight changes such as bumpers, grill, L groove on the back panel, etc there is a list of Citi's they made. But now they have completely stopped.

The only way you will make a mk1 is of you do what I did

sorry noob question whats NOS? do you mean OEM?

My fenders, grill, mirrors and bumpers are Original...came off different models of mk1's

the gti door vinyls are to spec of the original

The black arches and bumper end caps are reps

I am hopefully to moving to CT in November

I would love to own one of these, will keep my eye on your build

But what about the engines ? mk1 ones or something newer? And do you know how much did they cost brand new?

What would you love to own? a Mk1 Golf? or South African Spec Citi Golf?

My engine at the moment is a 1.4i , with a 4 into 1 branch and 2 box freeflow exhaust, the motor has 130 000km (+- 80 000 miles?) So its still got some life to it... I would like to put a bigger camshaft, looking at a 272 degree

In the future once I am done with this motor I would probably look at a 2.0 8v, The ultimate goal for this car is to make it a "show car" in a sense but still be able to open it up on the highway
