I’ve been trolling pretty hard for a while now, always on Classifieds and CraigsList looking at BMW’s. The E9s, E12s, E21s, E28s, E34s. I am incredibly picky, and none of them really clicked, or were anything I couldn’t live without. As all My buddies got their cars; Dan’s E36, Marco’s E30s, Danny’s s52 E30, Leo’s 240s/slammed accord wagon, and Troy’s WRX, my anticipation grew, and I had to have something. Marco hooked me up with a job, and I put in my hours stocking groceries at the commissary. I made half minimum wage, and it was probably illegal, but I saved damn near every penny I earned waiting on “the car”.
I jumped at a few, but none of them really had that special thing. That fender curve, that smell, the right bumper, or the right color combo. Like a girl with DD’s and a hollow brain. They just didn’t have it. So I waited, admired the cars of my homies, and watched from the sidelines.
She had always been there. Since I was in the 2nd grade, skateboarding out front of Dan’s, or swimming in Marco’s backyard. Not 100 feet away sat the love of my life, tucked away under a few blankets, a few inches of dust and cat prints, and behind Quads and Motorcycles. She was there all along. Just waiting.
Not many people probably have a relationship with the PO, but I gotta say something about this man. I grew up around Eric, he took us dirt bike riding, camping, taught me how to weld, cut sheet metal, took me out to sushi. Not my dad, just a bachelor who saw something in the kids who threw a football in front of his house. I gained his trust and respect over the many years I knew him.
People had offered him money for the car, but he declined. It just wasn’t right. Being a middle aged man with no family, his toys were his babies. He cried a bit the day he sold it to me. But I’m just a few blocks away and I told him I’d drive it over as soon as I got it running.
I spent a good week or so at his house, cleaning the car, studying the Porsche books, admiring it. Never thinking I would actually own this car one day. But I told him I would buy it, and I paid him cash money my hard earned dollars. I had my buds help me pushed it home, a few miles or so and got to work.
