  • in search of "standard" 40-hole JDM wheels

So, I need weird wheel sizes for my next build, and the prices on anything cool are super inflated right now. Thusly, I'd like to relip some wheels. I see wheelflip and other suppliers sell "standard" 40h lips, but just how standard are these things?

The lips in question have 40X ø8.5mm thru holes spaced evenly and a ø15.900" bore. The 18" reverse lips have the 40th hole slotted for valve stem clearance, the 19" step lips have a valve stem on the step aligned with the 40th hole.

Some research shows that these fit HRE, iForged, ADV.1, kinesis, and "plenty of Japanese wheels", but since I doubt I'm going to find a beat up set of 18x7.5 +38 ADV1's for $1000, it'd be cool to figure out just which Japanese wheels these fit.

It *seems* to me like most 18" japanese wheels with reverse 40h lips and the valve stem sticking through the 40th hole *might* work with these lips, but I'd like to go off more than that before I buy junk wheels.

Anyway, it looks like AME, MAE, Trafficstar, Maya, Blitz, Lowenhart, Zauber wheels with 18" reverse lips may work with these?

I'm a bit confused, what wheels do you have currently and what are your end plans with them.

Specifics will help a lot more... yes most 40 bolt wheel shells will work with most 40 bolt faces.

Sorry for the confusion, I haven't purchased wheels yet. based on looking at other people's setups, and my personal tastes, I can tell I want to wind up with sizing something like 18x10+0 front 19x11 +25 rear.

http://www.amcrimhalves.com/ has affordable lips and barrels, and I've also seen those standard 19" step lips and barrels in the classifieds here recently.

I was about to buy a set of 18x8,9 work bersaglio (the older version) here before I found those lips and realised they won't fit works, and so now I'm looking for a cheap set of wheels that will fit standard lips.

is it safe to assume that all of these wheels will work with the aforementioned lips?

May I ask why those lips from amcrimhalves wouldn't work with the Bersaglio's you were gonna purchase? Aren't they 40-bolt as well?

              seizethejay,

the valve stem is between two assembly screws on the work faces, and on the standard lips one of the holes is slotted out for a valve stem. if you put the two together, they'd cover each other up and you'd have nowhere to put a valve stem. You could add the slot to a lip, of course, but then you'd leave an assembly bolt out, and from what I'm told, the difference in style is also indicative of a slight difference in dimensions.

the 19" barrels/lips may work because the valve stem goes in the step, and if the bore is too small on the standard lips I could just open them up, but if it's too large then there will be slop in the assembly which I believe would make the wheels less strong where the face bolts to the rim halves.

I see what you're saying. That makes sense. Thanks for the response. I'm also interested in getting a set of Bersaglio's, probably the same ones you were looking at, and relipping them. But I'm trying to see what's the most cost saving way to go about doing so. It would be cheaper to find a set that will fit the standard lips, but I want them so bad that I might just end up getting them. I'm in the process of contacting wheel places in SoCal and seeing what it will run me. Best of luck in finding a set!

Chances are a 40 hole jdm wheel with reverse lips will take your standard 40 hole reverse lip. There's no way of knowing for sure on some of these random jdm wheels but sometimes you gotta just take a chance. You may have to shave the bore size of the barrels bigger/bore of the face smaller etc.

It's true about the valve stem holes not lining up but who cares? You can just angle the valve stem so it doesn't poke through the face. This can be a little annoying when putting in air with the wheels on the car depending on the face style but it's not the end of the world.

Exactly what I was gonna say^^.
it really depends on the wheels you're getting, some of the smaller brands like Riverside, Zauber, Stitch and the like had parts made by work, or were owned by Rays, kinda all in one. That being said, there's no guarantee.

VR has a pretty huge warehouse, and from what I've heard from others the people you email there are pretty receptive to making you what you need. FWIW I have a set of Weds Kranze and bought lips from them, my random Work VS-SD faces fit in the Weds factory barrels and lips from VR. Thus at least partly proving your theory that all 40-hole 18" wheels fit the same.

It's not so much the valve stem placement that worries me as the fact that the different design may be indicative of a difference in bolt flange diameter as well.

I actually work at a machine shop with ton of NC mills, if I could figure out a reliable way to clamp it to a table, jerking the center diameter larger with an endmill would be pretty easy. Especially when wheelflip is selling lips in their clearance section and telling people "we opened these up from 15.900" to 15.915" to fit a set of autostrada monzas, but they still fit normal wheels snug enough!".

I feel like the setup would be kind of a pain though. Shame I can't use a magnet... and getting shop time would be like pulling teeth with my boss so I'm going to try and find something that just fits. Maybe use standard 19" lips to step the rears and send the rear lips to the front, or buy wider work lips if need be.

I may have a connection for shipping stuff from YAJ / upgarage, so I'm going to hold out for a few weeks to see if this kid's "business connection in japan" can actually ship me wheels. Talk is cheap, but I hope this setup is actually legit. It'd be nice to have something come through for a change, I won a set of 19x8.5,10.5" maserati quattroporte wheels on ebay I was going to spacer to fit, and the guy refused to ship because he listed the price wrong, and just yesterday I won a set of Blitz Technospeed Z1's in 19x9,10 but $1450 wasn't high enough to hit the guy's reserve. Meh.
