Despite the fact that I love Lexus cars, own three of them, have a Miata, and a long history of owning various Hondas and Nissans, I'm a closet VW enthusiast. I've had my fair share including a mk3, a mk4 1.8t Jetta, a mk4 R32, a VR6 Corrado, and a few others, but my favorite VW I've owned was a mk1 84 Rabbit GTI. It also happened to be most rusty VW I've owned, and the cheapest, but I just fell in love with the car. Due to the sad state the car was in, I was advised that it wouldn't be worth saving, and sold it after driving it through the winter months. This was back in 2006, and I always told myself that I would get another mk1, as it kind of became my attainable, holy-grail car. I fancied a late 70s Golf since I like the single-round front, and a well-sorted 16v on carbs under the hood. As the years went on, I got distracted with other cars, but then opportunity struck a few weeks ago when my friend told me I could buy this one.
It's an 82 Rabbit, so it had the square headlights like my old one, but I didn't mind that so much as I really liked what was under the hood. The 1.8L 16v has been gone through top to bottom and runs strong. I don't know the specifics, but compression has been bumped up, and some aggressive cams found their way into the head, but this car rips. The exterior is extremely clean and the interior is dang near perfect. Cash and papers were quickly exchanged, and now I'm anxious to leave my own mark on the car. The one thing missing from my holy-grail mk1 is the carbs, so I'm fixing to change that over the winter, as well as address the rolling stock. Otherwise, I'm leaving the car pretty much as it is. The mk1 is a timeless car to me, and one I love looking at. With a carbed 16v under the hood, I'd be hard-pressed to find a car that I'll enjoy driving more it's good to have one back in the stable;
