It was raining pretty hard today and i had a hard time seeing the road ahead let alone the pavement. Anyways i hit something on the highway and ended up with this.



I was going to strip the paint and polish the lips in the next few weeks but i am unsure what to do about this. It's an OEM bbs rs lip. I had planned to take a hammer and try to bang it back in, maybe fill the rest with some silver solder or other metal filler.

so 1. will it work? i'm leaning towards yes since this is pretty much cosmetic, the lip isn't bent. but i'd like a few more opinions
2. how will it look? again i'm going for a polished lip so i'm wondering if this will really show? is it worth getting a single new lip for this?

What you are planning will be visible, imho. 'sides, I somehow doubt it'd be strong enough to hold the pieces together.

Imho, your best bet would be to have that piece removed and then have an aluminiumwelder fill it back up by welding on the correct alloy. That wouldn't be visible later (I've had a set of polished wheels that were fixed like this).

cut the real flipped stuff out then tig it up. Should be fine to polish after.

yes but there are different kinds of aluminum. the reason i mentioned OEM is because i know aftermarket lips are usually softer or cast or just not on par with oem. i can't find any information on what BBS lips are made of, not even newer ones like rs-2 or rs-gt etc

How much would a repair cost against just getting a 2nd hand lip?

My mate furbs wheels as a part time job he got a sex of oz futuras where it looked like the guy had driven down the road with the rim on the curb needless to say he ground it back and ran a bead of weld round then plished them up, you couldnt tell

Well i do have a blowtorch at home, some silver solder, various other metal fillers, (unsure of what my father has laying around) and if i can do it at home, then theoretically free.

i mean i really don't want to drop ~75-100 for a 1" lip just because of this but if i have to then i guess i will.

lupton and dr.ak, do you have pictures of the works you talk about?

I wouldn't be worried about 75-100 for a new lip. It's the taking apart of the wheel that's the time consuming part. If your not going to have someone fix it and you are unsure of how to, I'd get a new lip and call it a day.

i will be refinishing all 4 wheels so as far as taking it apart and all that i'm not concerned.

as others have mentioned get the lip TIG welded/filled

the most common alloy used for making wheels is 6061 heat treated to T6 strength and I would be surprised if BBS used anything else
