      Suuuuupdate

So no we didn't die, So here's a rather large update:

So after we mocked up the engine (previous post) we pulled it back out so we could paint the engine bay.

Adding some flake that didn't really turn out that good.

(We used the shorty Condor engine mounts for the final assembly)

next up we added a power steering cooler since these cars tend to blow up the pump if they get too hot.

Next up we ran into a HUGE issue. Turns out the 96' 328 had the stupid ews system that we couldn't bypass easily. So we went full yolo and got a megasquirt P&P from K-Data. Literally was the easiest install ever, and when they say P&P... they mean it.

As for a dash we opted to use a android tablet dash running the MSDroid app.

Now to button everything up we used a 1979 ebay camaro radiator, and some ebay fans.

We used a wilwood clutch pedal/ master... wait wut.. a quality part?

Cant forget that sweet JDM grill!

      Rear mount battery

      uh.. and a shifter extension...

These q45 NA m52 swap headers are for sale BTW

Full interior shot with the dash and Cliq tuning shifter.

      And like that we were set for a D R I V E

Just a cute lil pic of our first drive

Also everyone laugh at pauls ls400 with that busted oil pan shit.

Our switch panel with like every usb cord plugged in...

      That C U S C O catch can tho

and just like that we were ready for the first sonoma drift day with the new swap

Took to hood off to keep the car cool

Action shot throwing on the drift donks

This was around where my phone died, but we ran into a few issues with our catchcan routing, power steering cooler had a bubble and boiled over, and we DESTROYED the stock clutch.... so we limped the q45 home and took an L for the night.

But we did get this sweet pic of me spinning out.

      gas station pic tho

and an obligatory In n Out

      PT 2

So now that brings us to part two... addressing the current issues. First off some main issues we had was the actual steering rack had a bunch of play and numb steering. Sooooo if anyone was curious a 300zx steering rack is a direct bolt on. The only thing that you need to modify is a block off for the HICAS line. We drilled and tapped some plugs for ours but for those who want a more OCD option some thick plate and bolts would do fine.

Paul didnt take any pictures of the clutch install, but we threw in a "stage 3+" ebay clutch. and since theres so much room under the car now the clutch swap apparently took only like 3 hours.

So now with that fixed we went on to a big boy drift day at Thinderhill. This was an event brought on by Ongrid where they do both do a drift and grip sessions.

So naturally we didnt want to drive all the way there, since at 70mph we cruise at a solid 4k rpm... So we borrowed my uncles enclosed trailer, and our friends f350 and went off.

naturally we ran into an issue... our blast pipes were too long and we had to lose some scene points to get onto the trailer.

posted up with our grip bros

      somehow passed tech

swapped some new tires up front for some more grip up front since we were running some shitty tires up front.

after about 30 runs we ran into a slight snag. Our factor vlsd became an open diff since we overheated it, to the point that there was NO power going to the wheels. We thought the ebay clutch had already started to slip it was that bad

So the next step obviously is to
      1, turbo the m52.
      2, weld the diff.
      3, do skids

      SOOOOO

thats for next time. So here's a tease for ya.

Once I get a bit better at welding we'll make this thing wild af.

Yup, probably the last place to see a turbo M52... I was actually kinda bummed that the engine fit in so direct. I was actually looking forward to making some sketchy motor mounts.

                big update time!

Long time no see! So there's been some tinkering with the Q. We finished making up our intercooler piping, oil/ coolant lines, and all the ods and ends

Made a sweet side dump for the EWG

threw in some new plugs and topped her off with some fresh coolant

oh did i mention that megasquirt is pretty cool? basically told it that we threw 1000cc bosh injectors in and it started right up For now we're running the auto tune function until its good enough to drive over to our tuner.

with it running we took the car over to Paul's School for their annual car show.

posting up next to other BMWs

Without really ever being washed, oddly mixed matched wheels, and the general awkwardness of the the Q, it managed to overcome its shortcomings and win the students choice award!

After the car show we went out to go and do important things, like buy some new used wheels. Yah the side profile of the tires are too short and look kinda odd.

Next up we took the car out to our friends shop and we started making an exhaust. Its not pretty but it really made us realize that we need a pipe bender lol.

                #boogerweldporn

tucking it as close as we can to the body for that clearance

So with the car now having an exhaust that isn't dumping right in front of the driver we set out to do some tuning. Everything was going fine, we had it tuned for like 5lbs of boost and feeling good... then we somehow spiked to 15lbs of boost, the car turned into a frickin spaceship and went like super fast! Did I also mention that our car made this really cool smoke screen that basically covered all of the city in thicc smoke?

                oh... then this happened.

hmmm is it the turbo? I dunno, we bought a cheap turbo off ebay... better buy another one because it has to be the seals right?

                WRONG

hmmm not a melted piston, maybe the head lifted. So Paul brought the head into class and had it checked out with all the fancy tools from his auto tech class. nope... but an intake valve was a little bit bent. but that wouldn't cause a river of oil to shoot out the exhaust making a james bond smoke screen.

                Oh. maybe its that?

yah... so let that be a lesson for you kids. Don't run 15lbs of boost on a stock compression ratio with factory ring gap....

So naturally we took to craigslist to find a new block and boy did we find a random good deal. Two m50 blocks, a fresh m50 non vanos head, m54 rods and pistons, and an engine stand for $150

So now our frankenstein Infiniti will now have a frankenstein BMW OEM++++++ engine. So we got to thinking, if throwing in m54 rods, pistons, and crank on a m50 is a "m50 stroker 3.0" then what if we threw the forged m50 rods on with the taller m54 piston to make up for the height difference with the m52 crank?

so we did an experiment, in each cylinder we had a different combo. #1 was the factory m52 rod and piston, #2 was an m50 rod and piston, and #3 was a m50 rod with an m54 piston and we observed the height of each stroke.

Here's a terrible photo from instagram, I didnt take many pictures on this step since my hands were covered in oil.

with the m54 piston we managed to just ever so slightly lower the compression ratio over the factory setup.

we then started to re-assemble the block and threw on the m50 head with our m52 cams keeping the vanos.

Got a thicc mls 120 head gasket

                ARP studs

bolted the manifold on (side note wtf bmw... why do you need to have so many bolts on the frickin exhaust manifold... like really?)

At this time were just waiting on timing the engine and well throw her back in and make some jam! To help prevent the car from over boosting again were changing this up more now. We bought a new slightly better cx racing gt35 turbskie, a turbo smart manual boost controller, a modified STI 3 port EBCS and hooking that up to the megasquirt so we for sure can manage the boost better...

I'll hopefully have an update in the next week or two with the engine in the car.

Funny thing about that... we're actually thinking about getting a new cleaner shell and swapping everything over. just so we can go back to having it like a "street car" with carpets, back seats and maybe even AC

oh, once thing thing becomes half way reliable I plan on throwing it into a wall and copious amounts of burnouts. I also have this dream that one day we can do 1/2 mile racing with it...

Alright i'm bored and I figure i'd update this while I wait for forza horizon 4 to update.

So the last update I thought that we could run m52 cams in our m50 non vanos head since the m50 head looked to be in better condition. Turns out the m52 camshafts is just a bit wider and wouldn't actually seat in the head. So we decided to replace our one bent valve in the m52 head and throw in some s50 cams that one of our friends was nice enough to give us.

                              so just so I don't confuse people heres the engine specs;
                              m52 block
                              m52 crank
                              m50 non vanos forged rods
                              m54 pistons
                              MLS 120 HG
                              m52 head
                              s50 cams
                              s50 intake manifold

                              Pic with the cams in

its crazy that you can actually see the thicker head gasket

                              replaced a super worn pulley

And here's the engine all ready to dropped in with the turbo attached so we can actually torque the turbo down to spec with no leaks

Placed the engine in after a 30min struggle to bolt the engine mounts in. For some reason it fought us unlike last time.

got the exhaust and accessories installed. Paul found a cool ND miata catchcan/ washer fluid combo and we retrofitted it to a catchcan/ power steering combo to clean up the car. I totally didn't take a good picture of it for some reason. I'll include this vlog from our friend that shows the engine bay better at 3:21 and him overreacting to my legacy at 4:27

and bonus footage of the car actually driving so you know i'm not trolling

here's my updated trans mount with more mounting locations to help keep the car together.

and us after the first official drive to get gas

Now onto some random life updates because I can.

Me and my friends from all the way back elementary school decided to participate in the 24hrs of lemons... rally? Its a grueling road trip where you gain points for specific stops along the way in your "crap" car. This year we bought a 1985 Mercedes 190d, equipped with a monster 2.2L I4 diesel engine with a neck breaking 73hp when new... which is probably closer to 50 now... You get extra points in the rally if you have a theme, so we decided that since were driving from Monterey CA to Yuma AZ and back through the desert that we should have a Christmas theme! Here's a few random pictures of the car.

I got the car stuck in some deep sand

                              Anyone recognize this from GTA4?

We managed to win an award for having an exceptionally crappy car with broken windows, ac, and having a small car with 4 people in the desert wearing Santa outfits.

Well thats all for this update, we're going to work on the fueling setup on the q45 since its randomly stalling off throttle. And we should be bringing the car over to get dyno tuned by someone that actually knows what they're doing So i'll leave you all with a picture of our new steering wheel to replace our $7 ebay steering wheel.
