I do it in the next steps:
1. Place camera on tripod.
2. Using whatever light source (could be your mobile phone with flash turned on)
3. While lighting the car I let the camera to focus on lighted area.
4. Putting camera to MF mode, so the AF is not engaged anymore.

Hm i've had this problem before, @OP did you see the focus indicator light up a circle in the viewfinder or did it just have 2 arrows blinking, just wondering coz idk what to do when that happens.
Changing exposure settings helped a bit and when i upgraded my d7000 -> d700 that def helped

Ty my mind the only thing this photo lacks is a proper source of light.
