Not everyone has thousands of dollars of tools and lifts at their disposal. No shame in having some shops to various work.

If having my air conditioner fixed by someone who knows what the fuck he's doing makes my car illegitimate in the eyes of a few, I guess that's something that will just have to weigh heavily on my conscience for the remainder of my days.

Everyone: "It only costs you $20 to fill your tank!?"
                Me:"Yeap" *smile

It only has a 6 gallon tank.

I don't ever answer this question anymore...

                    I alwasy get the these:

Why do you have an old car?
                    I like it.
But it's so expensive to fix.
Oh right, tell me about your 2010 Volvo and its headgastet that has been
changed 2 times this year 'cause of material fatigue...

How do you see at night without xenon lights?

                    Why is it so loud?

Don't you already have a set of wheels?
                    Yes.
Why did you buy this set?
                    I like it.

And so it goes on and on...

                        • Regarding my quest for older stock alloys to refinish

Them - Why do you want to put an old set of stock wheels on your newer car?
Me - Because I think they look good.
Them - But they're older than your car - why would you do that?
Me - Because they look good - timeless design.
Them - You should just get some new rimzzz - chrome would look good
Me - Meh.... not my thing....

Back story - I have stock 18" alloys on my '03 GTI, the wife has hubcaps and wants a pair of ugly grandma-ish split 5 spoke factory wheels for her '05.5 jetta

My wife - Why do you need new wheels, your car already has rims
                          Me - because they're stock
Wife - So what..... you have bad taste in wheels anyways
                          Me - pssshhhh - 80's forever baby

                          She'll never understand.

                          • "How do you even drive that thing?"
                            -Really slowly.

"Hey, your car is leaking something."
-Yes, I know. It's a safety feature. When it stops I know it's out of something.

"Bet it's hard to find parts for that thing."
                            -Yes.

"Why do you put so much money into an old car?"
                            -Because I like to.

I'm not saying you do. Transmissions, differentials and a few select problems are left to the experts. But a lot of things can be done based soley on hand tools and some research. My buddy and I replaced all of his suspension componets with nothing more than 1 jack, 2 jack stands, spring compressors and 3 tool sets.

You're not a lesser of a person but I'm not paying* outrageous shop prices.

Me - See that badge? It runs on diesel

"Why does it sound like your car is going to fall apart?"
Me - Because it's a indirect injection 5 cylinder diesel
"They never made a 5 cylinder engine..."
Me - Mercedes, Audi, VW, and volvo have all produced 5 cylinder engines

"Why not buy a newer car like me and leave it stock?"
Me - Because I like doing my own thing, and standing out from the pack...
                                "Doesn't that attract unwanted attention?"
                                Me - Yes
