  • '99 Subaru GC8 RX Impreza

So, I decided it was time to cut my losses with my Zelda and try my hand at a newer car. I ended up parting out the bug after purchasing this '99 Subaru GC8 RX Impreza.

I had two things that I had to do straight away. Remove the hood ornament and get rid of the fart cannon.

The previous owner had installed a false floor in the boot already, so bringing my sound system from the VW was as easy as pie. He built the false floor due to the spare tyre being a full size spare.

Now, luckily for me, I'd already ordered a AccuAir SwitchSpeed setup. I'm in the process of setting up the boot install and getting everything laid out as I want. I'll hopefully be able to utilise the already built false floor, but I might just build a completely new one.

I plan to have the boot setup finished by the end of next month (May) and the struts in and everything working by the end of the month after (June).

So hopefully some big things happening soon. Still not sure what route I'm going to go when it comes to wheels, but have a couple of months before I hunt for some.

For a car with over 200,000km's, it is in very good condition. I've already had to replace the alternator, but should easily be a goer for a long time.

AWD goodness is also fun. Have already done a few "spirited" drives in her. Massive upgrade from a rear engine RWD that is for sure.

Did a quick mock up of the tank install in the boot.
        Enjoy.

Sorry about the quality of this one. It was the only one I had of how the wires and ECU would be setup.

My major problem is I need access to the spare tyre well at all times. This means breaking the symmetry of the compressors, unless I can think of a different way to mount them...

Anyway, hopefully after my Melbourne trip I'll be able to finalise the boot install as well as get the struts and what not all installed.

Seb you big tease, you going to do anything interesting with the tank like chrome or copper plating?

At the moment no big plans for the tank.
Originally I wanted everything hidden but I want to sort of show off the compressors and the tank now.

Hopefully I can tuck the wires enough and what not, but want it to be as clean as possible that is for sure. If I get enough time I might paint the tank in the same colour as the car and have a sticker on it, but we'll see.

I'm just happy that the tank actually fits where I want it to sit, albeit a tight squeeze where the compressors go in. Regardless, should be easy enough to put it all together, just need to go out and start measuring up so I can get started on the false floor.

Will be testing the boot setup again tonight, but this time with all the fitting attached and the majority of the wiring done.

Have also planned out the wiring and will be asking a few people while in Melbourne to confirm my wiring diagrams but from what I am aware of they are correct.

Will also be making up some templates in the next day or two so that I can get some MDF cut for me. Thanks to Mum's wiseness, I'll be using 10mm MDF which we will then use some form of polyurethane sealant before covering it in carpet so that if any moisture does arise, it doesn't warp the MDF.

False floor is definitely going to be interesting to build. Can't wait to get started!

                Everything is moving forward.

Got the tank and compressors all wired up to the ECU, relays and so forth. Everything worked as expected. Just need to start finalising the false floor and then spend some time cleaning up all the wiring to make sure it is perfect.

For those that can't get compressors to work but everything looks fine. Check your grounds. Damn grounds had be fooled for a good hour.

                    Thanks man!

Have also got shoes lined up for some more test fitting and rebuilding.
Hopefully have the car finished by the end of this month.

People say sixteens will be too small, I disagree. Especially when the car will sit on the floor.

16x9's and 16x9.5's are what I'm aiming to run for the moment. They will probably end up 10's all around or 10/10.5's, we will see. Offsets are still yet to be determined. Will have better photos up tonight.
