Sand down to bare metal. Apply water/saltwater to it.

If I'm not mistaken, vinegar and hydrogen peroxide give it that bright orange look.

this thread is relevant to my interests.

we just started our first rust attempt on my buddy's probe hood. we've just been letting nature take it's course, and after 2 weeks, it's barely rusty. we're thinking about pouring myriatic (sp) acid on it to see if it helps.

i've heard of people using bleach too....

i think it can be pulled off (both of mr. b's cars, that e46, civic, and mk3 up there all pull it off imo) but too many people do it just to be "cool" and do it on a car where it doesn't really work. to me it looks best on black or white cars. and the type of rust makes a difference in the look as well.

Rust looks best when it's natural in my opinion.

putting acid on metal is a bad idea, most acids eat metals, and instead of rusting it your going to dissolve it and remove rust. A lot of different kinds of acids are used to remove rust. An example is naval jelly, which has phosphoric acid is commonly used to remove rust
