  • Advanced Economical Driving...?

so assume someone wants to drive as economically as possible, they would do this by driving in the highest gear and at the optimum speed. When they went uphill they would maintain their speed but when they went downhill they would come off the accelerator (gas) in order not to use any fuel. If they were to coast at this point the engine would have to use a little fuel to keep turning over but if they were to leave it in gear then the wheels turning would work their way back though the drivetrain and keep the engine turning. Now does anyone know whether the loss in fuel caused by the loss of speed in turn caused by keeping the car in gear during the downhill run would supercede the amount of fuel used by the engine just staying at tickover
