  • "beetle doesn't suit you" they say...

    Hi all...
Maybe someone remember my blue probe, it looked like this...

    And ended up like that

Then I had this one and few more dailys

And then I decided to buy new car... My GF had vw caddy and mk4 golf, both were pretty reliable, so I decided to turn down my antipathy for VW and bought a New Beetle, it's just different shaped mk4.

Bought this one, 2000 1.8t with 370k kms but It was in good shape.
    The day I bought it

Traded my BBS RXII for these MAE crown jewels monoblock 9x19, they had huge tyres on them, but the thread was good, so I rocked summer in offroad mode. oh, and their lips were poorly painted white

Entertained myself with designing and 3D printing small stuff like dash vents, tow hook cover etc...

TA technics coilovers installed, pollished lips and smaller tyres. Sat pretty high that time as I got lot of axle binding...

Removed swaybar and wraped indicators with yellow tint

    Roadkill damage happend

I was a little short on money, so I ordered no-fogs grill frame, made maself a grill from some stuff at work and also made a splitter/lip form damaged Alfa Romeo 147 bumper...

More lows needed, so notch, engine spacers

    Polished wheel centers...

    And newly tinted headlights

3D printed temporary centers waiting for better ones to arrive.

We washed our cars and attended VW festival nearby.

And on my way back home it drunked like 20 liters of water for 80km...
So to my friends garage again, did timing, waterpump, new radiator etc..

Also audi centers came in, sadly I can't find the right caps, but these are pretty close.

    Looks better with them

Just testing my wide-body idea... not bad...

O really like how it stands out on the streets.

hohoo, extended balljoints came... More Camber and more lows

Always wanted open-air roof, but with roof that shape and size? Oh hey, used Ford Ka electric one comes to help.
    Weekend in the garage, yey

I still need to 3D print cover for this compartment. It protrudes about 50mms to the opening and I decided to keep it. It's practicall

Yeah I know, same angle again

Noticed that rusty rocker panel? Yeah, solved that with new metal ones and proper job of my friend Kesam (see Kesam Garage on FB
He had to refurb some tabs and even made new ones when needed.

Unexpected oportunity... Whole set of 2pc AEZ Olymp 8,5x18 for 90€? Here we go. New winters bought.

    Old 16s

    "New" 18s

    Daylying through winter...

... strikes back, shattered a lip by frozen snow

Nevermind, I took it off and came with Idea to weld the custom bumper.
First idea was with subaru legacy bottom end, and on my kinda over-the-top sketch it looked awesome.

But the bumper I wanted was already sold...
So I came up with idea of using Citroen C3 bottom end, with VW lupo indicators again

But this week. I found another add on austrian craigslist-like site...
Whole projektzwo bodykit, dual exhaus and set of fog ligst for 180€
Bought it... Bumper parts have few cracks etc, fixable. You can't find these parts anywhere anymore. It's not a mainstream car and these kits were pretty expensive new. Its front and rear bumper extension and 4 fender flares (not on my photos)

This is how it should look installed

Also mounted these rain guards, love em shitty pic though...

And these are already waiting to install, rear camber/drop plates -5 degrees from russian guy "billy bons customs"

and shorter front springs, not going that much lower but they should sit higher and I can probably get rid of 5mm wheel spacers and go a little bit lower then.

And this is how it looks now, dirty daily...

    And my next plans?
    - mount the dual exhaust
    - AC/SAI delete, new cooling fans and their relay module
    - replace engine bay fuse box - already bought
    - replace front springs for shorter ones
    - Fix, paint and mount projektzwo kit - not sure about fender flares- maybe we'll make custom ones.
    - Rewiring the roof so it's memory works and you can slide it with one button touch - now I need to hold the button every time I shut off my ignition...
    - rear camber plates, but I want to replace everything you need to remove for install... so new hubs and new brakes (maybe a vented bigger ones from skoda octavia RS)
    - subwoofer revamp, sound deadening, new speakers

Looking for another wheels, I really like the maes, they are pretty rare in this monoblock version 1... but heavy as f... I'd love to find some wider 18s...

And I really want to touch up my interior, its... well, now it has 393k kms on its clock, you can imagine that interior

Over all I would love to go "fat porsche" look with widened fenders etc... slowly...

Not much new happened... Waiting for some free time. But at least a little bits to keep it moving forwards...
Mixed heaterknobs from Golf Mk5 and Mk4 and some epoxy glue to create ones that fit beetle HVAC. On this pic you can see how does the interior look after 400k kms... Gotta refurb that somehow.
And printed temporary radio bezel to fill the hole there. Not going to paint it since it will be ditched soon (I hope ) with new stereo unit...

Also made first test with top compartment cover... Not best fit. Already designed mk2
Again, it's pink, what usable can one print of pink ABS? No idea... so I use it for prototyping

And I took of all the Adidas branding and unfortunately had to switch back to 16s as there happened 2fingers wide hole in my 18 tire... not going to invest in winters for 1 month, I'll take them 18 rims for refurb instead...

Replaced the exhaust... My phone died, I'm using old Nokia now so no pics from install, but it was straightforward process
Now rolling with dual tip Eisenmann

We got to make right hanger and cut plastic inner fender a little bit. Still gotta adjust the tip positions, some spacers for left hanger to make it sit lower and adjust the right tip which sticks out a lot more then left one...

Notice the left tip laying on the bumper and both not centered.

Made two brackets to move it a little. hope it'll will be enough. I'll try that in the morning.

Back to summer setup, observed this inner fender... It made itself some space as expected

                        Here it is now

Going slow, sorry for that But did a little bits

                          Back to the rainbow tint..

Painted the printed stereo shroud to look somewhat stock-ish

And then we replaced fan control module and fan assembly itself

Thought golf mk4 fan assembly would fit, turned out it wouldn't...
Thought we can simply replace fan with their tripods(or what the hell is the correct name for it)
turned out it works for big one, not for smaller one - you need to use beetle tripod with golf fan itself and you need to grind the legs a little bit to prevent fan rubbing...
But still pretty easy job and it's usually cheaper and easier to fing golf or octavia fan assembly here...

Replaced the front clip screws with ebay rainbow ones, sadly its smaller diameter and the black stuff here isn't dirt, it's paintless plastic :/
                          Will solve this later...

gotta clean up the engine bay a lot. Got to delete SAI and AC, replace battery cover, paint some stuff etc... you can see it has almost 400k kms...

with no help of our furry buddy tho

                          And two not car-work-related photos

And tomorrow it'll be time for shorter front springs which probably wont be visible from outside but will make me more tyre-spring clearance.
We f-ed our order and got only one rear hub yesterday so no rear camber install yet... Hope we can get it done mid-week as I need to leave for a weekend...

I really do consider buying these

That would be the needed impulse forcing me to start interior rebuild...

                            Bought them...
first thing first- ditch the stock ones

I didnt wanted to cut my own stock seats, so I cuted sliders out of my friends spare Audi A3 ones

The new ones came with sort-of frame underneath them, so few cuts, welds and sprays later...

And voilá, sliders mounted to OMP seats

Then you realize you cant slide them because the seat is mounted to forward and you cant use the lever enough to unlock sliding mechanism. so you take them out, weld extensions to rear, redrill the frame, paint again... and voila... mounted

My audi tt center console, knee bars, vents etc shoul arrive this week... then I need to find leather rear seats to match the front and reupholster the door panels etc...

sadly, later that day, I hit the deer...
what looked just like headlight and turn light at night, turned out to be "little bit" more in the morning...
I already ordered brand new headlight, used headlight mount bucket, indicator - going to take the front of to see what else I need.
Probably going to order brand new hood and fender, not sure yet.
For the doors I plan to use some hailstorm-repairs specialist...
