  • Tiny Tangerine BMW 2002

Alright so August 11, 2015 I bought this 1976 BMW 2002. It was a California car and was all stock except for the Hella lights, roof racks, and a Weber 32/36 carb (took me over 2 years to figure that out)

First thing I did was remove the front bumper, add an airdam, and make some brackets for my Hella fog lights. Wasn't too hard, the nose panel of the car already had some holed drilled into it from when somebody else used the airdam, and I just used some L brackets for the fog lights. Not the most stable thing in the world but not terrible either, I call that a win.

Next thing I did was replace my E30 Bottlecaps and ancient dry rotted tires with some 15x7/8 BBS RSes on brand new 195/50/15 and 205/50/15 Yokohama S Drives , transformed the look of the car and made it much more enjoyable to drive on new rubber. Now I could turn properly but I wasn't content with the body roll and I wanted the car lower. I installed some Ireland Engineering adjustable sway bars, 26mm or whatever their big size is. The car drove great and handled great but I still thought it looked like a monster truck.

I bought some front coilover parts and true rear coilovers from a local BMW parts legend here in Minneapolis and a second set of front struts from somebody off the 2002 forums and sent them to Le at 2002 Garagewerks and he made me a set of custom front coilovers, then I put the front and rear coilovers in the car. I also decided to replace my dented fender with a clean one off a Mintgrun car.

Coilovers went on pretty easy, but due to me having true rear coilovers and not a separate shock and spring setup the rear coilover reduced clearance on the inside of the rear wheels so I had to use spacers, which meant that my tires rubbed on the fender, badly. I switched to 195/45/15 Toyo T1R tires all around and lowered the rear a little bit more, I think it looks much better this way.

I got bored of the green fender pretty quick and didn't want to paint the whole car just yet, so I had a friend of mine wrap just the fender so it matches in the meantime. I wanted a little more camber so I decided to install Bavaria lower control arms to push the wheels out a little bit.

So the car handles great now and has tons of grip, so I decided to get a smaller steering wheel from RenownUSA, a Sparco fixed back race seat, 5 point harnesses, and a 6 point Autopower roll cage for chassis rigidity. Yeah I know, harnesses and a roll cage in a street car aren't safe, but the car feels better to drive and I feel like I'd be seriously injured in a crash in an otherwise stock 2002 anyway so it's fine by me. I decided to fix the exhaust leak from the stock exhaust manifold by getting a 4-1 Top End Performance header and 2.25" exhaust all the way back to an ISIS Performance dual tip blast pipe. I figured out I had a Weber 32/36 so I got rid of the stock air cleaner and got a sports filter for the Weber to free up some space in the engine bay as well as desmogging the engine and getting rid of all the unnecessary wires and solenoids related to the now defunct EGR system.

I got sick of driving my 2002 with the factory 4 speed manual with my loud exhaust, so I bought an 81 BMW 320is parts car. I intended to drive it for a little bit before stripping it for parts, but upon closer inspection it was too rusty so I decided to just pull the parts I needed and then scrap it. I took the trans, driveshaft, diff, cylinder head, intake/exhaust manifolds, and various interior bits before sending it to be scrapped.

I got a pretty good deal on a set of Weber 40 DCOE4s, so I impulse bought them. I was told that the DCOE4 model was originally on Alfa Romeo 1600GTs, so that's pretty cool. I'll be sending those off to be deep cleaned and rebuilt before I get all the other parts I need and tune them on my 2002. I also bought a set of original 13" steel wheels and then sent them off to be widened, so those should be finished in the next couple of weeks or so, and then I'll mount some 205/60/13 Toyo R Compound tires on them.

That is a really cool lil' 2002!

The best part of the car is the Libnan plate tho!

Love the car, orange 2002s just look so right. Nice score on the 320is, I've been hunting for one as a donor for my own 2002 but haven't had much luck yet.

Looking forward to seeing what's next!
