How do I get clean paint tape lines on wheels?

E34 BMW 540i, mounting E39 Style 37 replicas. The finish is a rough spun surface. I'm painting the spokes grey, keeping the lip machined.

How can I get clean masking tape lines on the lip? My first attempt wasn't very clean.

Remove the masking tape when the paint is still wet. If you wait until it's dry, you're tearing the paint.

I also just experimented with using vinyl tape instead of masking with some good results.
