  • E36 coupe M52 swap #RuinAllTheE36s

Been reading through all the Stanceworks builds for a while, I'll be picking up my M52 on wednesday so thought this would be the perfect time to start a build thread! Never done this before so here goes:

I bought this E36 coupe off my buddy's neighbour, i guess he had it for his daughter and she never drove it, got it for just over $1000, body is in immaculate shape and 99% rust free except for some slight bubbling on the front fender and some clear coat peeling on the rear bumper.

This is the 5th E36 i've owned, so i know my way around these cars quite a bit!
here's a few of my older ones:

Planning to just have it as a fun daily, M52 will be enough for me to have fun with for a while, and maybe once it's all together it'll see some track time.

Sadly the car i an Auto 4 cylinder (not for long though! ), but i purchased it because calypso is by far my favourite colour these cars came in, and the shell itself was clean.

First thing i had to do was get rid of the hideous (in my opinion) eyebrows and put the stock turn signals back on, not a fan of the clear ebay corners

    before

    during

    after!

replaced the black logos with some OEM ones i had lying around

my old black sedan had all-red tailights, so i thought i'd give it a shot on this!

don't know how i feel about them with the colour of my car, but i have a set of stock tailights i could put back on if i change my mind!

I've never really been a fan of the tan interior,

like all E36s the door cards don't like to stay put

so i started stripping it out!

ordered a sunroof delete from S2R Tuning

sourced most of a black interior, minus the carpet, which i still have to find, and will most likely be ordering some harrison motorsports door cards!

friend of mine gave me a free black dash as well as some interior bits

was told rear headrests were only an option in the '98.5 models, so i got that going for me!

Purchased a ZF transmission plus an entire 5speed swap!

    Car has 3 pedals now!

next step was to pull the M44 and autotragic trans

motor is sold and out of the driveway!

Also sold the contours yesterday, definitely going for something a little wider than 7.5"

    how she sits now

Picking up the M52 from a friend's shop this week, going to be sourcing a carpet and the final interior bits that i need, then after that its wheels and coilovers (Still deciding between BC's or Megan's)

So i guess i'd consider this the teardown of the car, she's going back together this week!

          M52 acquired!

got the motor with another ZF trans that i sold already

it's from a 97 328is with 222,000 km (which is a little high, but fuck it...)

Tomorrow night i'll be using some parts from my older M50 motor to OBD1 swap this motor and put the M50 intake manifold on!

Bought some D2 coilovers from a buddy of mine and those get here this week! starting to come together

              Coilovers came in today!

sadly i'm still rocking these steelies until further notice until i can find some style 32s or borbets

no wheels on yet but the difference in height is already huge!

              on the ground now!

the rear can still go down another inch or so, and the front could go down another 1.5"... going to wait to get wheels to mess with the height

sitting all funny right now because i have 17s up front and 15s in the rear... gotta find some proper wheels!

also managed to get my cleaned up spare subframe and Condor Speed Shop motor mounts in place!

and here's a closer look at the M52! all up on the stand now (also that ASD hydro from my old E30... that'll be coming soon)

So far engine-wise the plan is:
-OBD1 swap from parts i have from my spare M50
              -M50 manifold swap
              -Replace thermostat, waterpump, plugs, etc.
-Delete A/C and powersteering (been told you can use a mini cooper RS belt for a P/S delete, have to look into it!)
-TRM chip to deal with my EWS / OBD1 swap
              -Lightweight flywheel + new clutch
-Make up some EGR block off plates

putting together a whole order of parts tomorrow so that waiting begins!

already have an aluminium radiator, silicon hoses, new throwout / pilot bearings on the way

now we play the waiting game!

                Parts ordered!

Just some general maintenance stuff as well as some last little parts to finish the manual swap + OBD1 conversion coolant fitting

also ordered a lightweight flywheel from Racehead Engineering

She's hiding from the rain right now until my sunroof delete ships, taking a little longer than expected

                  big update!

i got wheels! they're Riken STX 16x8 et20, got them for a good price from a buddy of mine and they fit the car perfectly, just have to get my hands on some hubcentric rings

definitely going to have to roll these...

also finally got my hands on some black carpet! $20 from the auto wrecker, also snagged a few other interior pieces i needed!

all im missing interior-wise now is door cards (either going with harrison motorsport or MKAH motorsport ones), A pillar trim, headliner, and seats!

grabbed these downpipes for when i have to sort an exhaust out

                  and some boxes arrived!

                  CXracing aluminium radiator

                  ECStuning silicon radiator hoses

Turner OBD1 swap coolant neck in place

                  motor is now going together

just waiting on my RHD engineering flywheel to get here then i should be able to drop the motor in!

Can't get over how good these wheels look

Alright! got lots done this weekend

made some little EGR block off plates

lightweight flywheel (7 whole pounds!) came in!

motor is all buttoned up, got everything all together and wired up, vacuum lines sorted out too

realized that i need an M20 clutch and pressure plate to work with this flywheel, so i have to wait another week to put the motor in now

that gives me some time to do some stuff!

started by grinding down all the unnecessary stuff in the bay, used some filler, and sanded it down

                    then primered and painted!

went with a gold because i wanted something interesting

matched the core support to the motor, turned out so much better than I thought!

next step was to swap in my new subframe! had this sitting around since my last E36, has solid diff and subframe bushings from CondorSpeedShop, would totally recommend the to anyone, awesome guys with some great customer service!

also have a welded 3.91 diff in there and some 328i axles

bent a stud pulling the old subframe, luckily had an extra one lying around

                    And she's in!

thing was a bitch to get in, took about 4 hours with having to to leave the calipers on because i didnt feel like bleeding the brakes again, but it all worked out!

mainly stoked on the engine bay, cant wait to get the motor in!
