  • The mysterious and Ever-Elusive front end noise - MK5 GLI

*Disclaimer* I'm relatively new to the forum, and after perusing the guides, etc. I decided this would be the best place to post this question as the Coilover section is for Coilovers obviously*

Background: I live in New York, and I own a 2006 VW GLI, love it. Had it in the family since new (I bought the beauty from my father after he was done with her and moved on to first a 1988 BMW 325is, and then also to a 2012 VW GLI). This past summer, I wanted to up my personal work from 1-wrench jobs to 2, and so on. So what could be better for that than a new Suspension. I didn't want to be too cheap, but I also didn't have enough for a great set of Coilovers. SO I went with Eibach Springs, and Bilstein Shocks and Struts, along with brand new OEM Control arms all around and all the little nimbly bimbly (mounts, hardware, sway bars etc.) First, I verified the springs and shocks/struts would play nice. And that returned as a yes.
After the pain and torment of some seized bolts, I finally got the suspension finished except for the two rear control arms.

Sat down in it, drove it.
As I came in with low expectations as I have found I always should on the first test run, I heard a noise in the rear which I sourced to be inadequately torqued shock mounts. Fixed that.
Next run, car drives better than new. I'm psyched, flying around corners, shifting gears, pretending I'm Magnus Walker without the beard, car collection or inherent swagger. But really just letting my inner- Urban Outlaw Fly as we all do from time to time.
So I'm happy. Even take the car on a road trip the next week up to 'Cuse.
About 400 miles later, I begin to hear a clunking noise as I go over bumps, coming from under the car. Now I've sourced this up to this point to be SubFrame Related. Ive installed all new, thicker Audi bolts but the noise persists. Ive checked the torque spec about eight times, no luck. There's no noise until the car is rolling, and I hit a small bump or wee pothole, as there are many in these NY roads even after the egregious taxes.

I've lost track of where to go next besides a real good tear down. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not entirely sure but it sounds like it could be your sway bar bushings/end links. Also check for torn cv boots.
