  • Fakes into real splits

So I just picked these up cheap from a local classified. Still no idea what they are, aside from being manufactured in 1988.

14x6, et40-something, 5x100. Hardly aggressive, but cool wheels nonetheless, especially when I noticed the centers and barrels are separate pieces that were welded together later. I got the idea they'd be perfect candidates for converting to real multi-piece wheels and eventually mounting to my '73 Benz.

I have access to a lathe, drill press, and Bridgeport milling machine, along with several engineer friends who are quite excited to help out with the project. I've read through a few writeups of similar projects, and I know a few things to look out for, so I figure I might as well have a little fun and give it a shot.

What I'm having trouble with is sourcing parts and pieces. Whether I decide to go for two-piece wheels (purchasing complete barrels) or 3-piece (separate lip and barrel), I'm not sure where to look as far as finding lips/barrels with compatible bolt holes. The wheel center is 13-3/8" diameter, with 20 holes, each 1-7/8" apart center-to-center, and 12-1/4" center-to-center across the face of the wheel. I've also considered stepping up from 14" to 15" if that's possible.

If anyone who has done such a project can chime in with resources or pointers, I'd appreciate all the help I can get.

Anyone know where I can find 20-hole lips/barrels with the dimensions in the first post? Or at least a wheel manufacturer that uses a similar pattern?

Those are bbs e50 reps, and e50's (along with any other 15-18" bbs Motorsport wheel) use 20 hole lips. I don't have any around to check dimensions of, but you may be lucky and have them be the same.

These would look sweet on an old school Benz.

Thanks for the info, I'll see what I can track down!

Cheers! here's a few pics of the Benz in question:

Still quite a bit of restoration to go, but the wheels should be a fitting addition once done.

Bump! What multi-piece wheels use 20-hole lips and barrels?

Judging by the picture you would have to go 3 piece. As for lips, almost any 3 piece wheel company should be able to help out I'd imagine

Not really, certain manufacturers have different numbers of bolts holding the three pieces together. I'm trying to find ones that only have 20 holes, with the same dimensions as the holes that already exist on my wheels.

Can't you order blanks and drill the holes yourself?

You could see if Tuner Shop or Wheel Flip would be willing to help you out with them. I had a good experience with Tuner Shop, but Wheel Flip may be a little cheaper.

Not sure, can you? Any idea where blanks would be available?

Exactly the info I'm looking for! Heard of Tuner Shop, not so much Wheel Flip. Thanks a lot!

BBS Motorsport and Ronal. Maybe a few others.
