  • Talk to me about coilovers for an E38 7-series.

So, I'm getting ready to lower my 7 soon. Have replaced all the major suspension issues and I'm currently shopping together a few other items for some minor issues remaining (tie rods, top hats and such) which I will take care of when I install the coils.

However, I'm conflicted as to which to choose. Maybe there are a few guys out there that can give me some pointers.

Since I am in Germany, all the coils have to be able to come with TÜV papers, so some popular stateside options like NEX or such are out of the question.

What I'm currently looking at is the following options:

    1. FK Highsports
I can get these for around 430€. I know some guys stateside have been very satisfied with them, but over here FK has a bit of a crappy reputation. But I have no personal experience with them. I know mojocoggo / Dylan Leff ran his E38 extremely low for 2 years on a set of Highsports and was very satisfied, but I'm still not really convinced about these. Money wise however, they are the option I'd favour obviously...

    2. APs
Essentially the same as KW V1 for a cheaper price. I've ran a set of these in my E36 for the past 5 years and I'm very satisfied with them. I found one guy on here who runs a set in his E38 and from what he said, they ride about the same as they do in the E36. I could get a set for around 770€.

    3. Lowtecs
Lowtecs are interesting because they offer a different height adjustment in that you lower the actual strut body instead of the spring perch. Same system like on K-Sports and similars. They offer various stages of quality, the Lowtec HiLow 9.1, 9.2 and 9.3. Quality differences being that the 9.1 is produced with cheaper materials. The 9.2 is produced with better materials sourced from within europe only. The 9.3 is sourced from even better materials with every shock and such tested and certified before shipping. The 9.2 and 9.3 are available in slightly stiffer settings as well. The 9.2 is around 700, the 9.3 around 800.

    4. Vogtlands
I know Vogtland is a reputable brand and a friend had a set of these in his VW Golf Mk3 and was very satisfied. But that's about it concerning my experience and knowledge about these. I can get a set of these for around 730€.

This here is something along the lines of what I want to do with the car:

I want to go 20s, either 9x20 and 10x20 with possibly 225/35 and 245/35 or, more likely, 10 and 11 x 20 with 245/35 and 285/30. I want to eliminate all wheelgap. I do not want a bouncy ride, but I require it to be somewhat stiff, because I want to run as close a fitment as I can get away with. I'm not afraid of fender modifications either.

Can you guys give me any pointers on which coils I should go with? I'm really undecided.

    /edit:

Yeeeep. Wrong forum. Can somebody move it please?
