View Full Version : How long do your tires last?

With as much camber some of you guys are running, how long do your tires last? Do you just rotate them once there is too much wear on one side too get more life out of them?

Tire wear depends mainly on the toe of your car. My rear camber is way more than the front but the fronts wear faster because of the toe of the car...
Either way, rears have about 8k miles on them and are good for another 4 at least I'd say. The fronts went in about 7k. We're talkin Fuzion ZRi's here so tire wear isn't really too much of an issue...

I've had my tires for about 6 months and they are completely shot. Not sure how many miles, probably 5-6k

Shit dudes, 4-6k miles? I drive that much in just a couple of months. Is it possible to be slammed and run a very little amount of camber, if any at all? What's making them wear so fast?

Correct! Toe is the tire killer! When you combine aggressive camber and then scrub that camber with toe in you really KILL a tire.
This much camber:

It is not the camber 100%. Where is your rear toe at? I bet it is quite a bit, definitely so if your getting 4K out of a set. That is why I went to the setup that I did. I am not about to waste that kind of money on tires. Even with Fuzion's @ 80-100 a tire that is a lot of money wasted. Proper alignment and you can see ~20-30K out of them depending on driving style.

Swap that around.
E36 wants more camber up front.

It's funny how Halston was all about stance, couldn't get it to work on his car, and now he's all against it.
My Falken FK452's lasted a bit over a year on the Azevs. I thought they had life left but when I went to mount them on the Boyd Coddingtons, the inside shoulder was bald and the rear tires had bubbles on the sidewalls. :o

beyond -3 you can start to see some wear from camber even if your toe is at zero.
-2.5 to -2.8 is about the limit for this.
any toe outside of zero at these camber levels will greatly increase your tire wear. Which is a big issue w/ older bmw's as the rear isn't adjustable unless you do slotted subframe w/ eccetrics.
I think another factor is that many lower their cars and don't get it aligned afterwards and just assume it's because they're low w/ camber.
My $0.02 on my experiences.

i put my falkens on in February, its july and my rears are just above the wear marks, my fronts are shot on the inside. I gotta flip the tires in the front and i can probably get another 5K miles out of them. Camber is approx -3 in the front and like -.8 in the back or something like that. My front toe is out of alignment, i just eyeballed it, and my rear isnt adjustable

I agree. Lots of guys lower their car, change suspension components and just drive afterwards for months or even years. A good, fresh alignment makes a HUGE difference.

If you just eyeballed it that is why they are dead. I am guessing the toe is out of spec by a good margin and it ate the tires up.
I am a couple months on my falkens and I am ~ -3 in the front and -2.5 in the back and they are flat wear across the tread. If I actually cleaned up and cared about my tires they would look brand new.
I have to hit the alignment shop again here soon as I need to install new front control arms, bushings and tie rod assemblies.

Time for a new tie rod assembly?
Tuck&Poke
07-24-2009, 07:10 PM
no, if i change it the same thing will happen after a little while. Common problem with this chassis. The real way to do it is lift the car, remove wheel, break the nut loose with a long breaker bar, put the wheel back on and throw it on the rack.
dinanm3atl
07-24-2009, 07:23 PM
Well if that is what is required to do an alignment than that is what is required. Find a shop that will do an alignment :)
Why is the bolt getting seized?
Tuck&Poke
07-24-2009, 07:44 PM
my knowledge only goes as far as to its a common issue, i have a friend who is a tech at a vw dealership which is how i know its common

Have him align it then if he knows the problem ;)
If it is a VW problem I would have them align it for you, for free or low cost. That is what I would try first.

I get about 10k miles on my front tires, 7k on the rear.

T&P...
I'd get all new tie rods and fully disassemble them and lube liberally w/ anti-seize, even the lock nut/bolt (depending on your tie rod design). I always do this when doing suspension work on cars. It pays dividends later.

You know, it wasn't until I really started thinking about this that I realized that I usually use needing tires as an excuse to buy a new set of wheels.
The exception being that on my old A4, with about 7degrees of camber in the rear, I'd go through tires in about 10 thousand miles, IIRC. IDK, that has been a few years.

Either lots of toe, dead RTABs(if BMW) or you do LOTS of burnouts. Even the T1R should get twice that life and -2 is really not a lot of camber.

I'm not stanced but my POS tires have lasted me a good few thousand miles and are still at like 70% tread. I mean they would have more but I like to do burnouts. :D

From what im reading, negative camber does not wear tires as much as toe? Is that right?

60-80 for an allignment by me. My fronts are going strong about 6 months with -3 camber and just a pinch of toe. Ill need to replace em in a month or so because of the inside wear, prolly add camber to make them last longer. That was a good set of used ones btw.
About a year ago I picked up 8 17's and 2 18's from a legit used tire guy and I am just running out now. The guy hooked it up for 10 a tire cause he thinks drifting is rad lol. Would have burned thru them quicker but my car lost a lot of running time last season then I swapped the wheels to my DD.

if your toe is at zero, then camber only affects how evenly the tires wear... after that, it depends on how much camber you are running and how stretched your tires are.
IF you're partly on the sidewall, then obviously the tires won't last long. At -7.9 camber and a 245/35 over an 18x11.5, I only expect to get ~2-3k miles tops out of the tires. Luckily, I haven't run on a set of wheels/tires for more than 1000 miles.

Didn't know about this toe thing. Thought it wouldn't affect this much.
Anyway, I'm running on Toyos Proxes4 for 8k miles, and they have pretty much rubber, yet.
The front ones are a little worse (went to the track twice), but I think they'll last until august/september :)
