  • How to clean old wheels?

Picked up a set of 30 year old wheels that don't seem to have ever been cleaned. The problem is the casting for the center is rough, and I'm having a hard time getting into the deep texture.

I used oven cleaner and a scotchbrite pad, and what I'm able to reach has cleaned up nicely. Just the deep stuff that doesn't want to cooperate.

    Any suggestions?

Acid wash them? Or is that too much?
And what do you mean by "deep stuff"?

The casting has a really rough texture, and I'm having a hard time getting into the deep spots.

Acid wash may be too much. I'm trying the preserve the original gold color... it looks to be in great shape if it will clean up.

It's just a rough aluminum casting... looks like this:

Imagine it caked in 30 years brake dust and trying to clean out all the deep pits.

If you had a picture of what you were actually working with, it would be a million times easier to give you suggestions slash help with your situation.

Don't tell me life is so short, what have you done that's longer?

try iron-x and a wheel brush.
