View Full Version : Define "daily driven".

I've noticed that alot of people on the multiple forums i'm a regular on throw the words "daily driven" around when referring to their car's duties, when in reality, those cars are a far cry from being a "daily driver". Its not that I hold a grudge against said people, but it kinda irritates me honestly.
First off, my car is a daily driver. Its an '07, picked it up brand new in October '06, and it currently has 65,xxx on it. Its been driven through rainstorms, hail, snow, has been backed into 3 times, has had multiple visits to Dent Masters thanks to shopping cars/idiots who don't know how to open doors, has had a bent/destroyed wheel, replaced several tires due to nails, broken wheel studs, and sees regular 400+ mile trips (one way) to visit my rents down in SC. The half ass silver interior trim that came standard is begining to chip/peel and my driver's side floor matt now has a full on hole worn in it from heal wear, and the carpet is actually begining to wear now in that spot.
Its my only car, as in my current situation I can really only afford just the one car, and to me, is the defenition of a daily driver.
However, alot of guys throw that term around pretty loosely just because their pristine garage bubble kept $50,000 cars see's occasional road time, and god forbid, they might actually break those windshield wipers in over the course of a year. Guys.....thats not a daily driver. Thats just you manning up and driving your overpriced toy, lol. The word "daily" refers to "daily basis". I see show cars at HIN with widebody kits, sitting an inch from the ground with "daily driven" stickers on them......yet somehow the underside of their bumpers are still mint and theres not a scratch in sight, and the wheels are still flawless. There is NO WAY those cars are daily driven. I take good care of my car, but I also drive it alot, so things are gonna happen.
This rant isn't againt anyone on here neccesarily, its just.....well.....a rant. I'm bored at work and I saw someone on here (no names) refer to his car as daily driven, and to be honest, I just have a hard time believing that. I'm sure he/she has some busted ass Camry wagon or something thats his REAL daily driver.....and the other car is just a toy that sees occasional road time....when the weather is right of course :rolleyes

I know what you mean.
Some people do go to extra lengths with their daily cars though.
You know, parking at the end of parking lots, being really gentle, and cleaning it compulsively.
Personally, I drive and use mine everyday like it's a 22 year old scratched car. It's not a show car, it's my daily fun car. Works for me.

both my e28 and my mustang can function as daily drivers. usually the e28 is the "true" daily, but if/when it breaks/gets mods, the mustang takes over. then the process reverses itself. both cars have been in the rain, though the mustang gets a little "exciting" so i tend not to drive it in rain.
i consider both daily drivers

^ ha, so true, I eye fuck it on the webs everyday.
I usually have 2-4 cars at a time, all of them that are able to run/stop/drive are daily driven. I drive one for a week or two, then park it and drive another for a few. Rain/sleet/snow/sun I dont care. I am even driving my W210 right now with the paint half way sanded off and the bumper is body filler color. This way I keep miles low and still get to enjoy all of them.

Mine is the only car I own, so I pretty much drive it. Not always every day because I have no life and usually sit at home on the computer. And because it's not fun to drive a black on black car with no A/C blower motor when it's 100º+ outside.

IMHO, the key to keeping a DD clean/nice is where it's parked most of the time. If you garage it daily & your place of work has a parking garage with co-workers that aren douches (don't ding your car with their doors)...It's quite possible to keep your DD very nice. Next is general road conditions of the routes you normally "drive daily". Lastly, IMHO a DD doesn't need to be driven daily but if it's getting over 12k miles anually, it's a DD IMHO.
Edit: One more thing...If it never/rarely snows where you live, the chances of keeping it nice are increased.

My 535 is my daily driver. Bought it in October, 2007 with 240,132 miles and it has about 289k on it now. Since January 1, I've put 19k on it. It's a good-looking car, but it has a ton of rock chips, etc and it wasn't perfect when I bought it, so it has it's share of dings. It disappoints me with how it looks often, but at the same time, I don't have to feel as though I need to stay with it at all times. That said, I'm very careful. There are a lot of daily drivers that look nearly immaculate. I think a lot of it comes down to how you care for your car. Also, some folks don't have to go anywhere - like Dylan.

my STI is daily driven...
I drive up from LA to SF nearly every month. It's been through a few Vegas trips, and I drive it to work everday (which luckily is close). I also have a 2nd car that I put some of the extra miles on when I don't feel like adding another 1k from a LA to SF trip.
my IS300 is my daily..and only car
wake up, drive to work, 9 miles there and back, drive to friends houses, drive to school, 15 miles there and back, drove it all through the winter as well, chicago winters as well.
ive owned the car for a year, bought it with 64k miles on it and now it has 83k miles on it now
that to me is a daily driver

Damn there are some nice spots in there! There is a 15 passenger white van in my parking lot that I try to avoid as well. He ALWAYS backs it in and the parking spaces are barely wider than the width of the van! Makes me so nervous when I see that van parked next to my car.

I lived off a dirt road a few years ago. Holy shit that sucked. I would spend 2 hours cleaning my car, and then creeeeeep down the road to avoid getting it dirty.....but right as i'd be coming up to the end of it.........something......like a UPS truck for instance.....would come barreling down the road and kick up a huge dust cloud..........which would all stick to my freshly washed/waxed car.

I agree that it has to do with how one takes care of the car.
I drove my old M3 daily (work, friends, roadtrips, cruising, etc...) for 8 months one year, due to lack of a "daily"... But it wasn't really all that much fun in the long run. Keeping more distance between me and other cars, washing it down all the time, ****** to take it out in bad weather. And of course the total lack of ride height (pic to illustrate), made me realise that I needed another ride aswell. Massive props to those who do drive a hardcore daily, but in the long run it's not for me.
