Herro.

Welcome to my build thread. This is the EEEEEMR2. Here is how it looks now:

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff31/kramerbuccs24/1988%20MR2%20Supercharged/03d1493d.jpg

Here is how it will look in 2011 with 1" wider barrels in the front (moar stretch) and some suspension tweaks:

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff31/kramerbuccs24/1988%20MR2%20Supercharged/d9e8a295.jpg

The rest of this post is a timeline, it has a some dead links and talks about some plans that never went through so I gotta "rewrite" it at some point, but it's the basic deal

My car's nothing special but I know people like to see picture and progress from beginning-end (myself included) so I'll just throw this out there, probably won't have any updates until May or so.

But......

I'm Ryan, call me Kramer, and I'm a broke college student who lives in Albany NY, goes to school in the Bronx and drives this:

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff31/kramerbuccs24/1988%20MR2%20Supercharged/010rmx.jpg

Quick "cliff notes" of how it's sitting as of August 2010, stance clearly needs to be dialed in, this is just the only good pic I have of the RSs on the car:

It's a 1988 Toyota MR2 Supercharged with 80k miles, its really in great shape. I love the thing, got it in March '09 and all of '09 I autocrossed it and got into drifting. In May when I'm done with school I plan on finishing up some basic maintenance stuff to get it in really tip-top shape.

Current mods:
-Poly bushings all around including engine mounts
-Intake
-Stripped frunk/trunk (I'm a detailer and when I do off-site jobs I need all the space I can get, I end up having to take out my spare tire and passenger seat to fit my vacuum, lights, etc lol)
-185mm crank pulley (14psi instead of 8 stock, makes a pretty noticeable difference)
-Momo steering wheel
-JDM/Euro front turn signals. They're clear/orange with driving lights instead of the solid orange of the USDM ones, you can see them in the first pic, most of the rest have the USDM ones
-Sleepy eyez, real easy to wire up on this car, took my buddy about 4 minutes

Overall plans for April/May of 2010:
-"Stage 1" or so clutch, just something a bit more durable
-Get the A/C blowing nice and cold again (never hooked it back up when I dropped the motor to do the crank pulley)
-Waterpump/thermostat
-Fix exhaust leak with a new OEM header that I've got in my garage, maybe an electric cutout if I'm feeling ambitious
-Weld a support onto the front engine mount, they're infamous for cracking under stress from drifting, etc.
-Upgraded shifter
-SS brake lines with new pads and possibly rotors
-Coilovers for moAr l0w
-Remove third brake light on wing and replace it either with an OEM one that goes in the rear windshield or with one that lights up the "TOYOTA" roof spoiler thing, haven't decided yet
-Lastly, give it a REALLLL good detail, I never got around to it last year for some reason. The paint has potential to be nearly flawless, I just have to put in the time

Some more pics of the car:

I look like a retard here but I love the pic in general:

Air-vent placed boost gauge :) :

Only decent engine bay pic I have, still needs to cleaned up a lot, that'll happen when I drop the motor in May:

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff31/kramerbuccs24/1988%20MR2%20Supercharged/downsized_0503091659a.jpg

Ran 14.5 @ 92.7 with a slipping clutch, would love to get her down to 14.2 or so with a better clutch in '10. Not bad for a 1.6 liter, huh? :)

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff31/kramerbuccs24/1988%20MR2%20Supercharged/KramerMR2.jpg

Some drift pictures, definitelyyyyyy planning on doing as many as I can in '10.

If you're in NY, MA, CT, PA, VT, NH or anywhere in the northeast and are looking to get into drifting (its safe, not as expensive as you might think, and is TONS of fun), check out www.slideny.com !!!

This is the only AutoX pic that I have, I did 3 or 4 last year and it's also a ton of fun but gets expensive with tires. I won't be doing any Auto X in '10.

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff31/kramerbuccs24/1988%20MR2%20Supercharged/MR2-1.jpg

Here are two videos of my friend driving my car in AutoX if you're interested, no vids of me driving because the video dude was driving in the same heat as me:

The Koseis that you see in most of the pics are now sold. My current "project wheels":

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff31/kramerbuccs24/1988%20MR2%20Supercharged/0708091639.jpg

They're BBS RS 027 and 028s (16x7 et28 and 16x8 et28). They're currently 100% apart in about 150 pieces if you include all the bolts lol. I'm trying to get them all together over my spring break next week and my Easter break. My goals with them:
-Have my friend polish the lips and center "bolts" to a mirror-finish
-Order 136 gold bolts from www.blackforestindustries.com
-Paint or powdercoat the centers a grey/dark silver
-Order red/gold "BBS" logos for the center of each wheel
-Sell the ~120 or so bolts that are still in decent shape

A few more pics of the wheels plus a quick test-fit that I did. I'll likely have to order 5mm or so spacers to get the stance that I want (as low as possible, tucking tire front and rear):

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff31/kramerbuccs24/1988%20MR2%20Supercharged/CIMG5323.jpg

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff31/kramerbuccs24/1988%20MR2%20Supercharged/CIMG5330.jpg

You can really see that it needs a detail here :( :

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff31/kramerbuccs24/1988%20MR2%20Supercharged/CIMG5328.jpg

So that's about it for now, like I said I'll likely update this in April when the wheels are done, then in May when the car is all put together for the year, then throughout the summer as I drift it, go to shows, etc etc. I'll be at Import Alliance 2010 in Nashville in July with the car so hopefully I'll see a lot of you there.

I've also got a few friends with killerrrr cameras who REALLY know what they're doing with them so I should have some studio-quality shots like you see of all the big boyz on here in June too :D I'm pretty excited about that.

Okay, that was all as of the end of '09

MARCH 2010 (still feels weird saying 2010 doesn't it???)

FINALLYYYYYYY painted the centers of the BBS's

-1 coat duplicolor wheel paint
-2 coats duplicolor clear

TONS of prep thanks to me/my pops/my friends over the past 8 months, painting itself thanks to my friend Dave

The setup:

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff31/kramerbuccs24/1988%20MR2%20Supercharged/BBS%20RS/d2784f98.jpg

We don't mess around with knockoff wheels over hurr, these are my friend Dave's summer rimz:

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff31/kramerbuccs24/1988%20MR2%20Supercharged/BBS%20RS/8456e39e.jpg

Forgot to get before/after.... here's just "after" haha

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff31/kramerbuccs24/1988%20MR2%20Supercharged/BBS%20RS/fb641f22.jpg

I am veryyyyy happy with the results, looks like a top notch powdercoat job for less than the price of powdercoating one wheel!! Plus due to great prep work and the clearcoat it'll be just as durable... and the paint looks soaking wet even when its dry haha

What's left to do before my April 1-5 break (when I'll have them 100% together with tires):
-My friend Mike is currently polishing the lips and hexcaps
-Have to seal those with Zoopseal when I get them back
-Plastic-polish the "BBS" logos
-Order 136 bolts from blackforest
-Order sealant
-Order 195/40/16 tires from someone
-Put it all together!!!!!!

I am very exciiiiite, when they're done in April I'll have had them for 10 months. Cannot WAIT to have them done, let alone on the car!!!!!!!

MARCH 31 2010

Yo waddup girl.

Literally better than Christmas.

My camera SUCKS so the centers look kind of yellow-ish and it doesn't pick up any of the flake in the paint but whatever lol.

This was just a mock up, but still, I'm so damn happy haha.

Whats left (today is Wed. 3/31):
-Zoopseal will arrive/be applied Friday 4/2
-Wheels will be assembled, sealed and lock-tite'd Sunday 4/4
-Tires will arrive in the next few days and will be put on Monday 4/5

VERY NIIIIIIIIIIIICE

MARCH 31 2010

This morning (worked through the night because I felt like it lol):

aaaaaaaand as the sun comes up my work is done. I just need to torque the bolts down and seal the wheels tomorrow/today (sunday) so I can have the tires mounted on Monday!!!!!!!!

April 6 2010

Well..... I didn't get a chance to finish the BBSs when I was home, they'll be done in mid May when I'm done with this semester!

May 6 2010

A few more pics I forgot to post of my RSs (just need to torque the bolts down, seal them and get the tires mounted):

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff31/kramerbuccs24/1988%20MR2%20Supercharged/BBS%20RS/450e9279.jpg

Also, here is my to-do list for 2 weeks from now when I'm done with finals:

-TRU SS clutch line
-Resurfaced OEM flywheel
-TRU ARP Flywheel bolts
-Transmission fluid flush/change
-Coilovers , just bought "G4"s
-TRU Rear tie rod pair
-TRU (4) ball joint/front outer tie rod kit
-T3 Front/rear RCA and front tie rod flip kit
-4 wheel alignment
-TRU Brake kit (pads, rotors, SS lines)
-TRU High and Tight brake brace
-Brake fluid
-TRU Shifter kit (RSe, JonO, 93+, etc) & shifter bushings
-TRU C Pillar Hard Plastic Trim
-TRU Engine prop lid
-TRU Distributor repair kit
-TRU T top guides

-TRU Floor mats

-New water pump
-New thermostat
-Look at oil cooler seals and lines
-BKR7E 1 step colder spark plugs

Some of this stuff I already have laying around, some I just ordered, some I'm ordering over the next few days. I plan on taking the car out on Wednesday the 19th and working on it for 3 days straight if necessary, get it aligned on Saturday the 22nd, then I'm taking it to the meet/show/get together on the 23rd in Bristol PA. Within the next few days after that I'll have my friend roll the fenders and I'll test-fit all sorts of spacers to see what I'll need to get it herraflush.

This'll be the last update until I post during and after pictures/info of all that junk! I haven't seen my car in 9 months so I'll be treating her right with a full makeover the day I take it out :rofl

August 3 2010

FINALLY, a good pic of my car with the BBSs on it. I still need to spin the coils down a LOT but I only have 3 wheels on and the car is currently aligned so I don't want to mess with it/get another alignment until I have all 4 BBSs on.

Positive OR negative opinions are very much welcome, but will likely be kindly disregarded because I LOVE how it looks :D

i see youve been to lebanon. im fairly close to that track. what are some specs on the mr2, how many miles, is it mainly stock? my first car i believe had this same exact motor in it. how often does slideNY do meets? im registered on that site aswell

kramerbuccs24

Its got about 87k on it right now, only mods when I ran were an NST pulley kit and a pepboyz filter, I cut a 2.0 60ft on a slipping clutch and ended up going 14.58 @ 92.7.

I'm not sure about slideNY meets, I think there's a calendar on the website?

wow thats mint for that year. is the body rot bad?
my first car was a celica with this motor it reved so high. those toyotas like to rust mine had like 187k when i junked it. still ran like a top the rot was just way to bad.
old toyotas are fun cars. real light.

Thanks man! :D

I tell all of my friends that this is THE most fun sub 200hp or sub 100mph trap-speed car they will EVER drive and most of them doubt it until they drive it! There's just something about it.

Anyways, this is how the car looks now, neither of the people in this pic are me :rofl You can see the BBSs peeking out in the back-right and the coilovers in the front-right.

Coilovers, bushings, brakes, etc etc etc are 99% done, I'm going to finish them up now on all 4 corners, then I'm turning the car around in the garage so the ass end is facing out so I can drop the motor and do the clutch!

Moar updates tonight or tomorrow showing the 100% new or refreshed suspension and brakes on all four corners :D:D:D

TO THIS!!!!!

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff31/kramerbuccs24/1988%20MR2%20Supercharged/7e58bf61.jpg

Doesn't look TOO low in the pic but the tires are just about even with the fenders, tucking a HAIR in the rear.

All suspenzionz are done, 2 out of the 4 corners have the brakes all hooked up and shit (was too anxious to lower the car and see how it would look to hook the other stuff up lol) and now she's lowwww. Just about even with my waistline, maybe 1-1.5" higher. Remember that the tires on the car now are over an inch "taller" than the ones that'll be on the BBSs (not accounting for stretch) so it'll be even lower. I also have a good 1.5-2" of coil left to spin them down if need be.

Lastly, I put the camber bolts on all 4 corners at full negative just to see what it would look like and ZOMGGG hahaha

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff31/kramerbuccs24/1988%20MR2%20Supercharged/f59b609f.jpg

Soooooo many camberzz, that is the rear, the front is a littleee less. I only plan on running 3* on all 4 corners so that is clearly possible (WITHOUT rear camber plates!).

So yeah, suspension is done, brakes need minimal work, I took out the intercooler and some other stuff tonight to prepare to do the clutch on Saturday. I hope to have the car registered and inspected by Tuesday night, I have to bolt the BBSs together before it can be aligned, though (these tires are all sorts of fucked up from a drift event lol).

EEEEEMR2 is coming along nicely :D

Then they'll be put on my sister's Versa :eyebrows:eyebrows:eyebrows:eyebrows:eyebrows

The MR2 will be out and about (registered and shit) HOPEFULLY on Thursday the 17th, the only part I need is a new AFM/MAF which seems to be an imaginary item because I can't find one ANYWHERE that isn't $250 on eBay :(

do fucking work

Fucking work has been done and will continue to be done for the rest of this week until the car is done, inspected, registered and aligned. More pics and updates to come.

I've had the BBSs for 360 days as of today (June 18 2009). After going through the whole restoration project, I really think it's a two weekend job (working only on the weekends). I just went SUPER slow and careful just because I wanted them perfect. Thankfully, I got what I wanted, these fuckers are FLAWLESS :D

is that pete sleeping in the corner?

haha yeah he's yelling at dkid or dave or somthing, can't remember.

He's funnier in this pic though lol (me in the $5 shirt)

I most certainly will! Just need to figure out how much camber I have to play with then I can do some rough camber/height/spacer calculations... then dial everything in!

The first full car shots will be posted directly to the Stanceworks Showroom and I won't be taking them ;) :)

NikDev: The car is in my 1.5 car garage now getting a two-day detail from myself, the car SHOULD be 100% out and ready for inspection, registration and alignment by Friday. My garage is so small I CAN'T take full-car shots lol.

Anyways, started her up again, runs like a top as always, exhaust sounds great (for a 1.6L) and the damn battery is STILL 100% dead. All accessories work while the car is on but the freakin thing doesn't have any juice in it the second the car is turned off.

Could this be a loose connection or a wasted battery??? Any advice?? I'm going to take the intercooler/AFM/battery out again anyways to double check that all electrical connections can vacuum hoses are where they should be but I wanna know if I need a new battery.

Another vid (combo of previous one and a new one I just took, no rasp at all and a reasonable volume, I love this exhaust combo!!! (stock except for T3 test pipe). Getting 4 or 5 more hp and having a STUPID loud, expensive exhaust is not worth it for me, this is ideal!

More videos to come, but more importantly, any insight on my battery issue?

Oh absolutely, I actually on had those two BBSs on for that pic, I just sealed the other two tonight and will have the tires mounted and them on the car tomorrow, then I'll start dialing the stance in across the long weekend and get an alignment on Tuesday. I have 2-2.5" of room to go lower in the front and even more in the rear, that's without modifying the coilovers at all.

How hard is engine maintenance and work on these cars?

Not toooo bad, once you take the intercooler off (2 hose clamps, obviously), it's pretty much like working on a tight front engine/FWD setup. Getting to any of the pulleys requires the dropping of the motor, though.

By the way, I put the car in storage until April or May this afternoon, here are two pics that my friend snapped last week, never did get a proper photoshoot of the eeeeeeeMR2 this year, 2011 will bring more excitement:

Over the winter I am going to put 1" wider barrels on the front two wheels for moar stretch and moar low :eyebrows

After dialing in my coils, little to nothing will be done to the car until I can make her look like this (K20 swap):

No, it would become a 16x8 et37ish. The wheel becomes an inch wider, so the center line changes.

I'm not sure how you got to 37, I figured I would just add an "inch" (25.4mm) to the ET because the mounting point is now 1" farther out in relation to the wheel as a whole.

I'm not saying you're wrong I just don't know how you got your #.

Yeah it'll be more of the same, just lower. I have to figure out what I'm doing with the motor, I might screw around with the 4A-GZE and make it a ~103mph car with 200whp or so, ideally I'd like to just save up for a K20 swap. The perfect drivetrain for my car in my opinion.

Should hopefully have the two front wheels all done with tires on by mid March and I might be taking the car out then, if not it'll be Easter.

Anyways, wanted to ask you guys a quick question, does ANYBODY know where I can source clean plastic C pillar trim (all three pieces) without dropping $450+ on new OEM shit? I'm having a local tire shop seal them because I tried to seal them about 5x last year, the inverse/stepped lip makes it hard as fuck to seal. All I have to do now is throw them on, spin the coils down a bit more and get an alignment!

My good buddy Jim (Killer Blackbird) hooked me up with an amazing photoshoot in downtown Albany a few weeks ago and succeeded in getting it featured on Stance:Nation. These are the first nice pics of my car now that height is dialed in perfectly.

My only other plans for the car visually are to space out the fronts 10mm or so. After that I'll be putting only oil and gas into the car until I can afford the 250whp+ 10,000RPM 2.0L Honda K-series monster I've been dreaming up for this car since the day I bought it.

Enjoy the pics and hit up Killer Blackbird for all your northeast photography needs!!

Buy one!!! You won't regret it I guarantee it.

Hahaha awesome. I bought the car with the crack and figured I'd add a bit a flavor to it since the lip was already screwed

Muchos gracias. Once I figure out what size front spacers I want and buy/install them I'll completely agree with you :D

OEM+ is the name of the game for me, I don't see any other way to mod a car.

Unfortunately I'll be putting the car in storage from September to April seeing as I go to school in the Bronx and certainly don't need a RWD sports car down there. NYC is one of the few things I love more than my eeeeeMR2 :alright

Dude, if I got a MR2. Honestly, it would look very similar to yours as our tastes seem pretty similar. Especially the RSs. Although I would have tried to do some more aggressive lips and probably slammed the car to the ground until the frame almost sits on the ground.

can't go any lower without tubbing the front, the fender is about a third of an inch from the tire

Love your MR2, the colour and rims fit it nicely! :)

For all who are interested:

I sold the RSs to free up some cash. Kind of sad but whatever, I had my fun with them. The next time I bring the car out of storage I envision it raised up a bit with aggressively fitted 15x8 wheels and meaty tires, probably 245s. It'll still be fitted to perfection or as close as I can get, I just miss beating the shit out of this thing in corners!!

Final post of the old girl on the RSs :(

I don't know what it is but there is just something I love about these cars and always have. Yours is very well done too I like the understated not too flashy feeling of it.
