The wife and I built a car. Enjoy.

Oh and I do mean my wife and I, as you'll see. She's quite the wrench.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z45/m42power/IMG_5340.jpg

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z45/m42power/IMG_5364.jpg

I'm not sure if you all are aware but US spec E21s are an abomination to the BMW world by the war crimes committed on their body lines. US spec E21's had diving board bumpers (thanks USDOT), and even different sheetmetal pieces to accommodate these huge battering rams. I had previously accomplished the swap to euro bumpers, but the rear end still leaves something to be desired even with the bumper swap.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z45/m42power/Euro/IMG_5502.jpg

So the plan in a broad scope is euro out my car. Make it euro legit. To do that. I have to purchase some items:

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z45/m42power/Euro/_MG_5496.jpg

The trunk floor was purchased from a private seller. It was shipped and didn't fair to well.

My Pops and I got together over the course of a few weekends, and mashed out most of the rough stuff.

This build is greatness. Awesome skills, patience, and outcome. My favorite E21 ever.

For my old E21, I simply removed the front US bumper and used the rubber from it as the bumper, ha. I wish I kept the damn car, yours makes me miss mine.

Haha I tried that on my old one, a combination of dents from the PO and rust prevented me from doing that :(

Yeah I'm THIS close to doing a plaid headliner and i've found a couple good websites that sell fabric by the yard and most of them are 56" wider and up. Here's one with like 385 different kinds of plaid and i'm pretty sure you can get sample swatches. www.fashionfabricsclub.com click on "plaid" over on the left hand side.

I have seen notched subframes before. I am currenlty collaborating on some custom control arms so that the ball joint angle on the strut is not angled too harshly. I have gone through ball joints so quickly before.

A good friend is putting them together for me. Should give a couple inches of extra clearance and crush through the oilpan and then set the subframe down. The outside heim I can always shim further too if I want to add more space. Uses the factory outter bushing which I got from Jesse. Should be finishing these up in the next few weeks. I'm splitting the ronals and refinishing the lips, hardware, and reasealing them (leaks). So it'll be a while before the car is on the ground. Just thought you guys might like to see. It's not fixing the geometry at all unless I shim the strut, just making more space, and keeping me from going through ball joints.

This is, without doubt, the best e21 ever. Seen loads of pics around the net and there is literally nothing I would change on it.

Nice, but If its not to late you might want to consider going with a threaded rod with a nut welded to the middle for adjustments, and a female-ended heim. Add two nuts on either side of the adjustment nut for locking it in.

Since this is a road car, I would prefer the attachment of the heims to the car keep them from rotating rather than a jam nut. I'll take the extra 10 minutes to undo the heims if I really need to adjust the track width.

Should get version 3.0 today and get it fitted, then just build the other side. Kinda sucks that I'm justing using my instagram (theneek) photos, but whateves.

Not bad for 15s huh? I'm pretty sure the subframe will be on the ground when it comes off the jackstands.

Yeah seriously nick this makes all the difference. I would love to discuss the part sometime soon as I would much rather fab some control arms then start notching.
Awesome work so far with it.

And very jealous of the new Ronals. I almost picked up a set last week, but decided not to since the collection needs to thin out a bit

Well the arms kept hitting the subframe so we pulled a play from my buddy Chris' playbook and shortened the front subframe:

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z45/m42power/IMG_2811_zps3aec15e4.jpg

My good friend Ryan is the expert welder. I'm going to roll on this with stock control arms for this show season, then we will do the custom ones over the winter. Should be much more simple and more like the factory pieces, but with track adjustment.

The next gen control arm will just have a bushing carrier on in the inner control arm mount, rather than a heim. No need to adjust the distance of the swaybar to the inner mount. All the adjustment will be on the outer section to the strut. I also recessed the hardware that holds the subframe into the car so it won't be in the way of the control arm.

Hoping to be at Leavenworth, with a few other tricks in my bag.

The pan is gonna sit on the ground now, so it's probably an extra inch. I'll shorten the sump at some point. It improves handling when low and gives the struts a ton more movement. The engine needs to be lifted for an M10 car.

I test fit the subframe over the weekend. It's a good fit, just one hole to widen out a bit then it's ready for powder coating. Which is a crime because the whole thing is beautiful.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z45/m42power/IMG_2830_zps5ec29752.jpg

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z45/m42power/IMG_2831_zps8416fc08.jpg

Here is a photo for height difference. It's almost exactly an inch, maybe a thirty-second shy. We added a 1/4 plate to the top to make it more rigid.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z45/m42power/IMG_2833_zps41963c70.jpg

The control arm bottomed out again on the new shortened subframe, but it's so much lower now.

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z45/m42power/IMG_2837_zps6bf493f5.jpg

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z45/m42power/IMG_2839_zps8f72678c.jpg

With the car fully aired up the control arms are fairly flat and I've got 4 inches or so from where that photo shows it bottoming out. I'm thinking it'll handle really well at a cruise height.

Comparison to before:
http://distilleryimage3.s3.amazonaws.com/54c18b4448cf11e2b41b22000a1f9a15_7.jpg

It doesn't look like much but these cars are not very happy going low in the front.

Have you thought about bump steer spacers / strut spacers. To get even more drop?

It's a possibility. The strut spacers would be fairly complex as the control arm has a very large spindle in it. Once the custom arms are done we may do some spacers, depending on if the steering rack hits anything.
