View Full Version : Who let the Saturn In?

Wassup stanceworks....gotta mild build in the works, Saturn Ion Redline...built it for performance the first time around, its supercharged so it had all the bells and whistles, and I bought every bolt on available...blew it up....rebuilt it forged internals, head work etc etc, made it a monster. Attempted to drag it at the track 3 times in attempt to beat the best time of 13.7 @ 106 when I first got it.....snapped axles each time :mad.....said eff the track and here Im izz....

The evolution of the Tupper ware terror.....

The beginning....bought the car to destroy Si/ RSX fanbois that would obliverate me in my 99' Cougar :(. Needless to say, it DEFINITELY did the trick! Dyno'd 260whp/260wtq. Then they started sicking the modded evo's/suby's on me....

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/dom1013/Redline/DSC01244.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/dom1013/Redline/DSC01258.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/dom1013/Redline/DSC01251.jpg

So I took to the engine.....headers, downpipe, ported supercharger, big bore, 60lb injectors, snow performance meth, smaller pulley(18psi), bigger heat exchanger, 6-puck clutch etc etc....

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/dom1013/Redline/DSC01257.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/dom1013/Redline/SANY0344.jpg

Theeen, mishap occured like it uuusually does when your a noob tuner and ignorantly increase timing a bit too much down low because it "feels good"....I guess we live and we learn.

Goodies started coming in.....the pistons; teflon sides, ceramic tops etc etc:

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/dom1013/Redline/DSC00626.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/dom1013/Redline/2009-06-26134553.jpg

...learned how to properly tune EFI vehicles thanks to a couple Greg Banish books and some very helpful big name tuners that took the time out to let me pick their brain and got back on the hunt :devillook.

Once you realize....someone is ALWAYS gonna be faster you either go really big OR take up another aspect of your vehicle...

Oh KnoeZ, I bought some progress springs!! Now I'm slammed!!!

BEFORE(holy sheeet!! Thats high!!!):
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/dom1013/Redline/IMAGE_248.jpg

AFTER:

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/dom1013/Redline/DSC01548.jpg

aw man, was killin it in my eyes at the time, idk bout you lol.....

Sooooooooooooo.....I always wanted to be slammed but I never thought I had the right vehicle for such a thing, I'd obsess on the bimmer and vdub guys' cars and wonder such things as, "how do they get that rim so close to the fender?? It looks awesome!!"....never really thought too much of it until their secret got out and the rest of the world started tryna get proper stance on THEIR cars too. Hmmm, if they can, maybe I can too right??!?

I searched relentlessly for nice wheels only to come to the horrid truth that...NOBODY cares about 5x110 bolt patterns!!?? Can someone tell me why GM decided to put a Turbo Saab drivetrain/suspension in a SUPERCHARGED Saturn?? Yea, baffles me too. Thanks alot Saab, I'll blame them for picking such a wack bolt pattern.

Fret not though! "Whats that?? Adapters?? For ANY vehicles?? Thats how they get those hawt wheels on there!??! ....Show me!!"

5x110-to-5x114 20mm spacers thanks to Motorsports-Tech

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/dom1013/Redline/DSC01499.jpg

Then I went wheel hunting after playing w/the offset calculator for a billion hours, MISSION: Find a high offset 5x114 wheel that'll go decent w/a 20mm spacer......Aaaah! Subaru's!!! So I sought out the dopest wheels I could find......

Volk TE-37s!! uhhhhhh okay, maybe not.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/dom1013/Redline/DSC01213.jpg

Okay so maybe not the dopest! But Im experimenting and this is a Saturn!! Jeeez!!

Round one....20mm spacers/adapters 18x8.5 rota Grids on falken 215/40/18s.....

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/dom1013/Redline/DSC00857.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/dom1013/Redline/DSC00110-1.jpg

Finally had some decent stance in my life, aggressive, mean looking, I was loving it.....Till I heard baby Jesus ***** Rotas and I still had wheel gap in my life :mad. Back to square one!!

You have to ask yourself..."What Would a V-dub Guy Do?"

I still dont know how in the world or WHY in the heck b&g would even consider the vehicle but boy am I glad they did and I was able to get some B&G RS2's for my Saturn, yea shocking :confused

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/dom1013/Redline/20180_263865756549_716376549_4883676_6746385_n.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/dom1013/Redline/DSC01560.jpg

eating away at that wheel gap and loving every minute of it!!!!

Now I need wheels....ehhh, stretched was nice but I have a supercharged fwd, I need meats on the front!! those 215s werent cutting it at all!!! 50mph rolling WOT tire spinning FTL! Hmmm...I immediately hit the wheel sites looking for the next wheels to acquire. Volks, nice! BBS, yes! CCW, hawt! Works! hmmmmm....*looks outside* Hey, that's a Saturn out there :(. Thats not logical OR practical...there's gotta be a solution.

What's that someone was saying? "Forged, made in Japan 17x8.5 17x9.5, not too heavy, kinda stylish, outta the GM performance division, cheap!" Show me..........C4 Sawblades, craigslist search aaaah....$200, phone call, "see you tomorrow, sir:"

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/dom1013/Redline/2010-01-18011845.jpg

Win....oh and a V-dub guy would approve. Lets throw some numbers around and see what size adapters are gonna work best w/the camber and tires I'm wanting to run.........welp after a couple of weeks of crunching and messing around I sought out motorsports-tech again. Prayed the numbers were right...............got the adapters in and went to work.......

Round 2

Started the day out like this today...............something just wasnt right though.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/dom1013/Redline/355815628_6135_.jpg

Because I still had wheelz gap, lets get those shock bodies down a bit!!!!

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/dom1013/Redline/355815628_6176_.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/dom1013/Redline/355815628_6174_.jpg
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/dom1013/Redline/355815628_6189_.jpg

*brought tears to my eyes* watching my fenders and my tires meet each other for the first time, was love at first site!!! :alright

More pics to come, just used my phone while I was on lunch after I twisted em down a bit, that's enough for one days work, but I'm not perfect yet, I gotta lil wheel gap out back to handle :(. This is an update for you guys from the Intro thread....lemme know what ya think, good or bad. I love it....I scrape all over the place, snapped the stock end links, and have been see-sawed once on a really high driveways w/a mean curb! Did I mention I love being low?

I think I'm gettng pretty good at this...scared of what round 3 will bring....

Tried my hand at fiberglassing....didnt wanna use a double din kit, so I fiberglassed the shroud to fit perfectly around the deck to make it look factory:

Wired up the amps and all the interior speaks....Im from Texas, we have to "Swang-N-Bang!"

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m65/dom1013/Redline/355815628_6200_.jpg

Tried my hand at box building also....came out better than I thought sounds good for two Alpine Type R's...

lol....I know saturnstance will hold it down for the plastic too soon haha.

Some quick side shots, the back needs some work but Idk, I have rear passengers from time to time so Idk I might leave it as is. My camera sucks so these pics really don't do the set-up justice at all, plus it FREEEEZING outside!! :

Kill me, but I'm actually a bigger fan of the rotas than the polished blades.

Dom_J
01-31-2010, 12:32 AM
^^ I can take that...I really did wanna see how it looked on the 18" rotas slammed but I needed the money for coils and I really wanted to try out a wide 17, I still got the adapters, never know...

Thanks again on the inputs guys...I just do what I can with what I got ya know. I've been cringing on the terrible roads of NJ lately waiting on the worst to happen on the road but she's handling all the bumps, speed bumps, potholes, dips just fine thus far, I snapped the stock end links on a REEEALLY steep driveway while see-sawing on it, and bent my DP flat(more clearance now lol)! That's about it haha big thanks to B&G for making a great kit.

I hope the rubber doesnt rub through the fenders!!! I didn't even get a chance to get rid of the little lip because the tires got to em first!!!

:rofl

Looks dope man, I never see Redlines doing anything for looks. Glad you can freshen up the scene a little. There are a few around here that are seriously fast... A friend of mine had one that was like 313whp, but he demodded it back to stock when he got his '09 Camaro SS and supercharged it.

I think I know who you talking about actually(only know his username though haha)...the Pittsburgh crew is known to make these LSJs wake up and go, they were running 12's w/these cars when ppl were tryna crack high 13s...I used the same method as most of the guys, super small pulley, minimal cooling mods, and just enjoy! haha I havent dyno'd since the rebuild and new tuning but I'm right at if not a hint of the 300whp mark.

Thanks on the compliments...

lol keeping it real....appreciate your input, your Bimmer was one of the ones tha ones that had me sold on the vette wheels(though you got the ZR1s) but your thinking exactly like I am w/an extra 10 out back, I wish I woulda went w/a bigger adapter, dammit, I wonder what adding a spacer to the adapter would ride like vs getting completely new adapters.

Anyone doing something like that??

If only saturns weren't made out of cardboard.

delta bodies (my car, his car and the hhr) are extremely rigid, and gives paintless dent removal techs, body shop employees, fender rollers aaaand idk what else i was gonna type im drunk and just broke up with my gf.
but anyway....the cradle is steel, control arms aluminum, nice timing chain aluminum block with a split deck all that fancy crap. don't **** on delta bodies. EVER. especially low ones. i put sooooo much god damn work into this car to get it low it's not even worth it.

Appreciate that input fellas, puts a little extra in the "git-r-done" tank...I'm just about building to my pleasures and the Saturn happens to be the toy to bring them at the moment :cool

The Evo is certainly fulfilling the "go fast" fix but it soon will fall into the stance madness. 17x9.5 Advan foot prints are in order once the piggy bank fills again, this Euro rate is killing me!

Making a little more progress:

- Rear Bags/Brackets Made it in
- Front Struts on the way
- Air management decision almost final

Who would have imagined in Southern Spain, I'd find one of the hardest v-dubs I've ever seen.

***He's trying to figure out the radiator situation w/eliminating the reservoir and all, he wants to tuck away a larger unit between the bumper and front cross member. If anyone knows what the current shaved bay v-dub guys are doing w/the radiator situations, it'd be nice to let him know.***

Thanks on the compliment, definitely keep that build going on the 2.4, let me know if you have any questions etc. Got the rear bags set-up pretty good...fronts not so much as I got a "incorrect" resleeving so now I'm stuck trying to make up another .5 to 1" myself somewhere in the strut design w/a annoying power steering issue I'm having that's a factory recall but its a little hard to address from Spain :mad haha

I appreciate the work you are putting in the car. But it's still ugly as fuck.

Haha thanks...yes, you correct, they are US Spec vehicles...I brought the Saturn over from America, I brought the Evo over from Japan and I ordered a Volvo(US Spec) to be built and shipped to me while I was in Spain. A few of the European auto manufacturers have great deals and packages for military personnel stationed overseas looking into buying new cars. But when it comes back time to go back to America, the Evo is going to bring some headaches w/customs :mad
I was pleasantly surprised how it turned out, car and work are really nice!
Thanks for that!

I'm absolutely in love w/the body lines of the car, I guess they kinda grew on me early...Thanks though!

Appreciate the input fellas...

The car is no where near finished as something always shows it ugly head when I take a step forward! I do want to finish the Evo for next seasons hill climbing events & I'm super anxious to get this Volvo on some suspension and wheels but I definitely haven't forgot about my tupperware terror. They go crazy when they see this Saturn and Evo in Spain. It's almost like an exotic car in a sense, I guess it kinda is in a sense.

Next up:
- Front suspension fix for maximum drop
- Exterior Paint Color change
- Interior Re-upholstery
- Real Pix
