Picked up a set of 17x8.5 and 17x9.5 ACS type1 3-piece wheels the other day. mounted them for a teaser:
http://home.sandiego.edu/~pkostka/imagefolder/e28_acs.jpg
they rub in the front on the spring collar and rub the fenders in the back. i have a fender roller on loan from a friend so i will roll all 4 lips. pretty sure i can take care of the front rub with skinnier tires. was thinking 225 or 215, not sure what is best on a 8.5" rim. not looking for tons of stance, since car is a DD.
existing tires on them are 235/45/17 and 255/40/17. obviously no stance. i think i will swap over the 245/40/17 from my mustang over to the 9.5" rears for now.
the front rims need refinishing, i think i am going to disassemble the wheels and go to town on them. a quick cleaning and this is how they look:
http://home.sandiego.edu/~pkostka/imagefolder/e28_acs_front.jpg
the rears a damn perfect. centers could use some paint but the outer barrels look good. inner barrels both have some repair work, ill get a pic of that later. i believe at least one of them leaks air so im not sure if its cheaper to repair or get new barrels.
http://home.sandiego.edu/~pkostka/imagefolder/e28_acs_rear.jpg
so the project is to dismount the tires and disassemble all the wheels, repaint the centers, and refinish the barrels, then install with stance status. e28 will also be getting bilsteins and lowering springs.

Nice project, I have always wanted a set of these beauties. Are you staying with silver centers or changing that up too?

i need to get me some time to disassemble the wheels and get to work. im leaning towards silver centers or gold. black IMHO is overdone and white is a bitch to clean

so your the ass hat that beat me to them on vortex...lol
congrats man i jumped all over them and told him to give me his paypal info and he said they had JUST sold them damn you. i wanted these bad.
Personally i would go for gold but an actual gold not that yellowish gold pee color you have sampled there....i also think matte black would look sick on those. excited to see what happens

after viewing yet another "WTF is up with this rust hood shit" post on another forum, i was inspired. dunno if its even possible/safe/etc. would probably be best to do with paint and not actual rust, lol.

Your wheels aren't steel

Your wheels aren't steel
hence the "dunno if its possible" part. i figure paint or some sort of coating process could make it a reality.

You could get them airbrushed to look like that i guess

well, after searching around, i found the "special tool" to remove the wheel bolts, which turned out to be a $3.50 8mm 12-pt socket from sears. got a little suspicious of the $40+ socket tools on a few of the custom wheel sites.
my buddy devon is getting his DS1 wheels powdercoated by a local shop. he is getting me quote on gold powdercoating the centers of the wheels. if his turn out lookin hot, ill be doing the same.
ive done some reading and it seems like the centers should come out without heat, but we will see. i am planning on this weekend for taking them apart.
in other news it looks like the pedal bracket on my e28 has cracked, making the clutch stick, so that may get in the way of this whole deal, we will see.

Awesome wheels, I'd love to find a set. Check out Nogaro Silver, its a darker silver, pretty classy.

No need for that.
There is a special paint that rusts. AFAIK it's basically a clear coat with lots of metal particles which start to rust after a time.
This here was apparently painted with that stuff:

finally got some work done on these wheels.
disassemble! they came apart real easy, no heat required (yay). looks like there was some epoxy/silicon used to seal em together, so that gets added to the reassembly parts list.
http://home.sandiego.edu/~pkostka/imagefolder/acs_apart.jpg
40 bolts per wheel = lots of wrenching, and broken knuckles
http://home.sandiego.edu/~pkostka/imagefolder/acs_40.jpg
the centers will be powder coated gold. outer barrels get polished, inners get a good cleaning. yay.
