I'm in the process of researching tires for a set of 17x8 wheels. I'm not interested in serious stretch or poke. Modest stretch would be fine.

Stock size is 215/45/17 on a 17x7. I've seen pictures of 205/40 on a 17x8.5, but it had just a little too much poke for me. Would a half inch less make that much of a difference on reducing poke?

    So sizes I'm considering:
215/45/17 (stock tire size, on a one inch wider wheel = stretch?)
215/40/17 (stock width, shorter sidewall = stretch? but speedo off 3.5%, not that that really matters)
225/40/17 (wider, shorter, wider wheel, am I just going have a vertical side wall, or will this look good at all?)

Also, what tire brands/types are y'all running on fitments close to this? As long as they're stickier than the stock all seasons, I'll be ecstatic. I've seen a lot of Fuzion ZRi on here. I had Fuzion ZRi on my last car. They weren't bad. The tread life was actually okay, but overall I just wasn't impressed with them. I'll admit, though, that it's damned hard to argue with the price. What other tires should I be looking at?

1/2" less is a huge difference. Check out the tire fitment database
