I know most people envolved with modding cars have at one point or another had a RC car they messed around with. I wanted to start a thread dedicated to RC cars and specifically RC drift.
If you have any questions feel free to post... or post up your personal ride or info you found.

You can make just about any 1:10 4wd touring style on-road car into a drift car. They make all types of Drift specific tires these days that can get you sliding sideways. The have a scale body of just about any real car you can think of. You can get a kit that will get you started good for around $200 that is ready to run. I started out with a $90 Tamiya TT-01 chassis and put my own electrics and goodies into it.

I have a tt-01 I used to drift once in a while. Got an adjustable A-arms kit for it and adjustable tie-rods. Also has metal bearings and a alloy prop shaft. Faster motor and an esc to go with.
I mostly enjoyed cambering in the wheels as much as possible to slam a body on really wide wheels :D

I did drifting for a while with a TA TC4 and a Tamiya TA04S, but I sold both when I got heavy into 1/10th touring racing. I run a Serpent S400 now.

The only time I lost interest was when I didn't have anyone to play with. It is always better when a buddy or two has RC cars also. My first RC was a RC10t so that gives you an idea of how long I've been doing it. The socal drift scene or RC scene in general is pretty big. I have a friend of mine that I sold my last car to that is down to drift anytime... so that's a good thing.

Go on www.groovydrift.com and look in their classifieds... people sell used complete or rolling chassis' all the time and all kinds of parts and stuff. I bought my tt-01 off of their for cheap. Someone is selling a ready to run kit right now with everything you need for 100 bucks.

I've had my share of RC cars as well, mostly older Tamiyas, which I used to bash around parking lots and over dirty fields, simluating rally racing, lol. I really liked the old TA02. I had an E36 Touring bodyshell as well.:eyebrows
Never really had any interest in RC drifting, though.
Sold all my RC stuff when I got a real car, then got back into it for a short while with a Tamiya FF02 with a Mk3 Golf shell, because I had the same car IRL.

i posted a couple of these over on WFC. don't know if you guys checked them out over there but here's a couple of drift rc videos.. the last one is out of japan. in the japanese video alot of the guys are running chassis from Alex Racing which is about as good as it gets..

rc drifting has come along way in the last few years. if you guys were into it before and got burned out on it you should give it a try again. the cars drift way better now if you set them up properly. the tires are much better and they have dialed in how to properly set up the drivetrain for drift.. not to mention all the body and wheel options.
Grippy, you should do a Hellaflush graphic body. it would be sick because it would be official!

no, all rc drift cars are AWD. the chassis is just dialed in for countersteer drifting which allows the rear wheels to turn slightly faster than the fronts so that the car drifts more realistically. you can do longer more controlled drifts by allowing the rears to push you through the turns while you countersteer with the fronts. it also makes it easier to whip the back around on tight technical stuff. it really makes them drift like the real thing and is considered to be the next level in rc drift. look at the slow motion footage. it looks pretty close to the real thing
Gator
06-16-2009, 02:58 PM
just answered the question I was going to ask, wanted to know if the chassis are more biased to the rear wheels, looks like it would be hard to drift an actual rwd rc car
Digitalwave
06-16-2009, 03:02 PM
There is no bias, but people play with solid and one way diffs (and drive shafts if applicable, or lay shafts) to alter the way each end behaves.
It's next to impossible to properly drift a RWD r/c car.

this is from groovydrift. they have a counter-steering section in their forum..
by changing the final drive of the rear wheels, you can make them spin faster than the front wheels. This means that you will have to counter-steer more to hold the drift. Rather than just sliding around barely counter-steering, you have to counter-steer to drift.

Exactly. Depending on the body 3mm front and 6mm rear is a good setup. I've had 9mm rears but they poke way too much on most bodies.

The Tamiya S15, R32, R33, R34 really have my eye... I am probably going to do a S15 or R32 first. I like Tamiya bodies cause they are true to shape. Some of the other brands are more Aero and sleek, but aren't as good looking as I prefer.

^ those are fun to mess around with, but they arent the best for actually doing competitive type drifts... You cant carry the speed and agility you'd really want. That's why the drift tires are a little pricey, but totally worth it. The Yokomo single ring tires are bomb.

DO IT!!!!
Here's my recent work...
I worked on these two bodies today with some new paint I haven't tried before from Pactra. It is their Racing finish line. It's a two stage paint. You do the colored metallic coat, and the final bottom coat brings the color to what it is on the can. I painted the S15 first since it was going on my car, and I painted the Trueno second for a friend. I learned a little from doing mine first. The paint needs to be shaken way more than you would expect. Mine started spraying clumps out which messed up some portions of the car. So don't rush it if you are using this paint. The outcome is well worth taking your time!
The cars are not complete so there is a few things missing in the pics... so don't mind the non-trimmed posts, missing mirrors, etc. The S15 is from Tamiya and the Trueno is of course HPI. The trueno is not mounted on a chassis.

*edit* What are all the different pieces I would need to buy, to put together a car? Like chassis, body, motor?
grippymonkey
06-27-2009, 12:45 AM
I would start with a Tamiya TT-01 chassis. It is cheap, easy to build, easy to mod, will not break, etc etc etc...
A standard TT-01 kit will come with a motor and an ESC (speed controller). You would need to buy a battery, charger, Radio Controller that comes with a transmitter and steering servo (my $47 Futaba controller came with both), paint for the body, and if you got a standard kit there would be no drift tires. It would come with tires for touring car racing (grip). There is a few versions of the TT-01 now. There is a drift specific version called the TT-01D which comes with drift tires and some other goodies (oil filled dampers, bearings, camber adjustments, sportstuned motor, etc) that make drifting better. There is also a TT-01E which is just an updated version of the TT-01 that comes with a few extras that makes the chassis more stable. It's all stuff that can be easily bought for the standard kit in OEM or aftermarket. The TT-01D can also be bought in a ready to run version and I think it even has a painted body, but in my opinion it takes away from the learning experience and fun in painting your own body and building the kit.
If you bought a TT-01 kit I would recommend right away buying ball bearings for it (15 bucks), and when you assemble the kit cramming the rear diff housing full of silly puddy so it locks it up and does consistant drifts.
Here's the specifications for the Drift specific TT-01D - http://www.tamiya.com/english/products/58388mazda_rx7/index.htm
Here is a standard TT-01 chassis.

OK I got some updates...
The fatlace team cars got some mods during this passed week. I have some additional items coming in, but they are starting to come together really nicely. They drift with ease and get alot of angle with countersteer too.
The one with black wheels has a great powerband and gearing, and the other one is a little quicker than stock. I am going to be upgrading the power on it pretty soon since it is my personal chassis. The other I bought for a friend.
CF upper deck, steering kit, camber arms, etc are some of the mods we did recently.

doin this shit for 7 years now. welcome to rc guys.
i have run a rally converted a traxxas 4tec, and two different tt01s
my current is a tt01-d covered by a pink fd3s with all the lights and stuff. it rolls on hpi +6 mm work meisters wrapped in some abs tires. with 5 deg- camber front, and 4 deg- camber rear. locked rear diff, aluminum driveshft, kit shocks filled with 35 wt. front one way and novak 17.5 bl to come.
i have a fantom racing 27t can with an epic komodo dragon 19t pro armature and endbell. its really torquey and responsive with some nasty top end.
but im more of a dirt guy myself, i race a short course converted losi 8ight(nitro of course.), an associated sc10, and a losi xxt-t.
www.groovydrift.com is where i do my rc stuff. its a forum and guys are always making bodies and tires.

Why would you run so much camber on a drift car, especially with ABS tires? They must cone up like a mofo. Hell you would never need to run that much camber on an on-road r/c car, ever, no matter what.

mainly for looks and to get my rims to fit. but it helps the car break loose. less contact patch.
its drifting and you tear that shit up anyway. might as well look good doing it.
and i only pay 1 dollar per tire.

RC drifting has alot to do with looks as does real drifting. If you look at the countersteer RC videos from Japan they are running tons of camber at the professional level.
Everyone still driftin on ABS should really upgrade to HPI t-drift tires. They are the best tires I've drifted on, and they also are used in most of the RC drift events.

Hmm, I guess if you are really under powered or have a poor setup it might help. I always wanted as much traction as possible.

under powered? helll nahhh! i drift on grippy pavement and porous concrete. the last thing i need is grip. i do want to try hpi drift tires but the price sucks. and at 1 dollar a tie, i buy in sets of two.
i run a cheater 19t motor. by cheater, its using "stronger" magnets(can from a 27t) for more torque and its got alot of rev and top end too.
i run this same motor in my sc10(2wd) and even at full speed i manage to loop it out on hard packed dirt.
with the camber, suspension setup, tires motor etc, my car reacts to throttle very much like a rwd car. more gas, equals more angle and it will not correct itself. you need to steer to get it back in place.
you would have to drive it to see what i mean. alot of people will say ahh its all talk but my car drifts better than the yokomo kits because of my tuning. im more than willing to pass my setups along to others with tt01-d's or or for the traxxas 4tec.

Ive been meaning to get one of those things
now all i have is a traxxas sportmaxx with a 3.3 in it
there is no reason not to. they are hella cheap and the tamiya kits come with an esc and motor with a good bit of torque for drifting.
all you need are abs or hpi tires and you have instant drift car. its the little driver secrects in tuning and skill that really make the differences.
for example, i use a castle creations mamba max esc to control my drift cars because i can adjust my throttle and brake curves via laptop to make the car drive more realistically.
and i have a way to make an lsd out of your stock gear diff, but its very meticulous.(and if done right feels very nice)

Yes, I wanted more traction than bare ABS tires gave me so I could carry more speed. As much possible traction with ABS tires = still no traction.
It was a bit different with Yokomo drift ring tires, but I didn't like spending the money on those.

^ I kinda liked the single rings but I could only get 5 runs or so out of a set. The HPI T-drift tires seem so much better to me. They are pretty solid and should last easily twice as long.
I have a Ko Propo Vfs-fr ESC coming in along with a 17t Reedy motor. The Ko Propo has no motor limit and is designed specifically with drifting in mind. I already got used to the power of the upgraded 27t I bought. I think this should hold me off for a while. I drove the other TT-01 kit I bought for my friend which came with a nice upgraded ESC and an expensive Reedy 19d spec motor and that thing is fast! Almost too much power. You have to really go easy on it once you open it up. I think it has alot to do with the gearing too because the main gear was changed to a hopup part and the pinion is a 25t which needed the motor mount to be modified to fit. I am going to mimic that car and one up it with the motor.

A little unrelated since it's not drifting but I what the hell, it's the only r/c thread we have. These are some pics from the last state race I went to.
Me wrenching on my Serpent S400. The Novak GTB has been replaced by an LRP SPX and I'm currently testing a prototype speed controller for another company.

its really not. base model tt01. uesd to be 99, have not looked in a while. includes decent motor, esc and decent body.
you need a battery. 40 for a decent hi capacity nimh.
radio you can find them for under 100 for an am or fm and a 2.4ghz system can be had for 110.
charger 60.
initial start up sucks, but its ez pz after that.
towerhobbies.com is a good place to get started. them move on to a forum based site like groovydrift.com to find all the swwet deal parts bodies etc. its alot like what we do to e30's.... but hella cheaper.

Bumping this thread back up with pics of my Yashio Factory-inspired S15 body. It's for RCGT racing and drifting. All paint, paint masks designed and cut by myself and sprayed myself! I am pretty proud of this body.

Mines the WRB subaru bodied TT-01. The track setup on the carpet was pretty fun, tons of traction even with the ABS tires.
