Are you on cut springs?
ff_drift_lol
11-16-2009, 06:01 PM
yes, until I can afford coilovers. I am still skeptical about buying them because it seems no one can get past a 3.5 inch drop. if that's the case I will have to just start chopping shit again and I don't want that.
painted the fart can high temp matte black today. still needs to be tucked back more.

Not a big fan of Cobalts, but that has potential. I never really thought of one slammed on decent wheels.
ff_drift_lol
11-16-2009, 06:32 PM
no one really has, and that's why I'm going for it! I am very limited to low offset wheels with the 5x110 hub. What's the silliest offset you think I can get? I found wheels with a +5mm that are pretty affordable they're quite the dishes and 8 wide so I'd have some room to stretch. my stock offset is 42mm, am I looking at mandatory fender pulling for a 5mm wheel?
B Rod
11-16-2009, 07:19 PM
Definitely try and find something wider than 8".

no one really has, and that's why I'm going for it!
Yes, that is a very big difference. Picture where your wheel where it's at now at +42, then picture it moved 37mm towards the outside of the car. Hope that can give you an idea. (25.4mm = 2.54cm = 1 inch, keep in mind)
That is a Saab (maybe Volvo too?) bolt pattern if I'm not mistaken. Maybe try looking for wheels that will fit Saabs, might open up some more options.
ff_drift_lol
11-17-2009, 01:59 AM
yes, the whole car is a saab with a j-body style slapped on the drivetrain/subframe. it even says so on the cylinder head. the 900 owners with this bolt pattern as far as I know have resorted to adapters which are usually at least a 15mm negative offset. I would like a deep dish or even something like work emotions to really poke and finish the look. anyone know about custom drilling? I would imagine a hub adapter (to make up for hub diameter) or even honing the inner hub of the wheel is not impossible either.
the front is maxed! rubbing bad! if i lower the rear it'll just look stupid. I am on 18's...anyone got some euro informationz?

ff_drift_lol
11-19-2009, 05:32 PM
my cut springs have a soft spot for bumps lol!
k-sports will drop me to the height I need, but megan racing (BC coilovers) makes different length springs for different drops and I would rather go that route. Plus the megans are 32 way and only 900 dollars!

Joe Flacco
12-12-2009, 01:19 AM
Definite potential, like it was said, I have never really seen one that looks good. All the people around me that own then are young kids. The typical SRT-4 driver, exhibitionst in public with thirty rev's of the engine just to get out of a parking spot. But I do like yours, potential....potential

seems like theres a few LI'ers on the board all from suffolk too
Wyo_A4
12-13-2009, 03:39 AM
You could always run wobble bolts and have access to Audi or Merc wheels if i am correct...
I actually think it looks tons better low and could be done very nicely. Keep it clean.

hEeey, fellow 5x110(saw your thread on ss.net, alota ****)....yea our bolt pattern is fail, wtf was saab thinking and GM for using their drivetrain?? I used adapters to convert to a 5x114. Currently for sale right now actually :)
Check out my thread in the Intro section I just made....been lurking for a minute, finally made a post.
I orderd the B&G Coil-Overs, I was worried about the rear beam axle in back but obviously that shouldnt be an issue if you got that low. Im almost sure the coil overs wont get me that low in the back. We'll see when this snow clears up!
I was gonna cut my progress' too! lol was getting desperate for some low, hopefully the B&Gs are the rememdy. Hit me up if you want these adapters, hubcentric and all, excellent quality.

are you the guy with c4 vette wheels? looks dope btw.
a few updates guys.
i'm still not crazy low, but low enough to compliment the wheels. I am on ground force front springs and "trimmed" rear progress springs.
so the story is...hit a curb.

future plans to widen the stock wheels to 9"
for the interior, gotta finish up the custom roll cage and line the whole car with bamboo flooring and zebra carpet. budget build at it's best lol. enjoy!

I'm not a fan of cobalts either! bought the car with more interest in performance. grew out of that now i'm stuck with a typical gm car worth way below what i owe on it lol. but a constant desire for good taste will have this car looking fresh. i appreciate the comments guys.
I like the white and pink, but the gold looked way better on this car.

You can always drill and insert 5x112 or 5x114.3 wheels to 5x110. I've done it a lot of time and even put cobalt wheels on a w124 mercedes by inserting them to 5x112 and drilling out the center bore. Trust me it's safe and i've done it tons of times.

hey negative camber batman! I think you should get spacers at least, camber really sunk in the rears. Looks good tho!
Props for the craftsmanship. This is another thing I have to do with my car like your camber plates.
You know you can find plenty of parts for Cavaliers and Sun fires dont you?
Aside from that I am sure I have seen plenty of adjustable rigs for Cobalts.

i'm going for that bad stance look, you know horrible fitment beefy tires raked look. jk guys i have 5x110. finding real wheels for this thing is not fun, and i **** to say but when i bring home 400 or so a week, a sparco wheel or corbeau seats are not out of the question but wheels are at least double that for some cheapo's. it's a work in progress, and trust me sooner or later I will fulfill your fitment requests. i had to raise the car up a quarter inch today cuz i was rubbing bad while driving. it kills me. i want the thing tucking rim. widening the stockers 2" is my dream!

This.
not at all, this is a delta or a-car platform. that was the j-body platform. they had 5x100 i think? or 4x100. the base model cobalts came with 4x100 for some time, i'm considering the downgrade for the wheel options. the drivetrain to this car is actually entirely saab design. i can get all of my engine/trans parts from a saab dealer. i share bolt patterns with like 6 cars. it sucks dick.

i give MAAAD props for makin shit work like u did. i have Tein Basics on my 05 Altima, the rear kinda tucks 18" tires, and the front isnt low. i plan on buying some lower front springs and retro-fitting them in the coilovers so it drops another inch. its still not really CUSTOM cause i aint cutting and welding anything so i give u props. in my personal opinion whether ur on stocks or aftermarket wheels, if ur tuckin tire your low enough. im not one to promote "poke" but if u tick rim it will look way to tucked in completely. ive always liked the Cobalts, almost bought a red SS with the turbo. good job cant wait to see the progress!

ff_drift_lol

shims sir! i'm back on normal camber now. my tires were a bit cupped and slightly worn, but nothing you wouldnt expect from that amount of camber. i'm tucking all 4 tires now and happily banging frame around the streets of long island daily. wheels next!!

i knoooow i am trying to find some 5x112's from merc that will fit with wobble nuts.
I don't think that's gunn work. Merc wheels require longer bolts (38-40mm) and wobble bolts come in one length (27mm). You need VW/Audi wheels and u can't use spacers :P also u'll have to bore the bolt wholes to 16mm to allow for the 2mm "wobble" to happen.

new interior stuff. i got wink mirror and the sparco wheel with nrg quick release which has been there, extended my shifter about a foot (love driving it!) and did a legitemate zebra carpet. no floor mats here. just gonna line the rear of the car with some mahogany i have and make it look real clean with the roll cage it should look super tight. so yeah, just waiting for my one 30mm spacer adapter to get my fitment right, if it's the right one i get the 3 others and then i'm basically done.

Ok, do you happen to have a pic of the shims you have and where did you get them? or are they something custom you did. I have an 09 SS thats why im asking so many question just so you know.
ff_drift_lol
11-05-2010, 06:21 PM
they are 1/4" thick steel plates i machined to fit under the bottom bolts on the hubs. it's really not the best idea. i know the risks i am taking here, and it's stressing parts of the rear that shouldnt be stressed. it also throws out the rear toe. to do this correctly. order real shims from SPC special products company they make eccentric bolts and such. make sure you have a lot of time on an alignment machine if you want to get it right.

ff_drift_lol
11-15-2010, 12:05 AM
not exactly. saw it on the datsun 610 wagon and a few other heartbreaker cars, there's like 2 more. seen it on classic drift cars, don't know really what i did but i like the look of that style tow hook and no other style does it for me. and once the wheels are on it'll come together. this week, bear with me. this car is a combination of a lot of different cars i've seen and just basically an art project in automotive form. i'm not just slamming the thing on wide wheels, there's a lot of character to everything.

that "thing" hanging is called a Tsurikawa
they are all standard length, and people hang them to show how low their rides are compared to other people. like mine would drag the ground, and you would still have soem clearance, thus proving im lower than you.
where'd you snag one?

11-15-2010, 07:58 PM
i didnt kno the name but, in japan stealing is highly frowned upon (i.e. my buddy lost his wallet in the snow at the airport. couple days later someone calls him saying ive got ur wallet. he returns it and it has all his money and cards still in it. another example, ppl around the base here say your car is safer off base than on base. if u leave ur car unlocked off base u only have to worry about an american stealing something. go us right?). so publicly stealing a subway or bus handle and then attaching it to your car to flaunt your badassness.
bozosuko stuff kind of also. for those who kno the bozo style, did u kno motorcycles started the bozo style? i just learned it

yeah man i just picked it up at a marine supply, took be about 3 hours to find the thing went everywhere. got some of that fabric you use for tie down straps. hung the ring from a tree, painted it satin pink to be obnoxious. sewed it around the ring. i can pull the car with it and i went way crazy with the sewing so i'm pretty sure its functional. i mean i pulled my car in the driveway it works nice. i safety pinned it so its not dragging for now. how do i find out what the standard length of these things are?

ummm... I really didn't think this was going to look good at all.
1) I don't usually like these wheels
2) I don't usually like cobalts
3) I don't usually like rediculous poke/stretch
BUT somehow it all works together, here.
This is the most incredible cobalt I've ever seen.

While agree that there's nothing boso about the car, but there's also nothing remotely VIP about it. At all.
Also, that Skyline is a kyusha genre, but shakotan just means "lowered car"... I'm not certain that it indicates a particular styling either.

that's the real challenge here. the car's got a ballsy motor. i'm a damn good mechanic and i am pretty sure i can get this thing on the track running good times. custom control arm bushings, real adjustable dampening shocks instead of shot stockers that have been on drop springs for a million miles and beef up the strut towers. i could type about it all day but you get the point. i know what to do here, it's just a matter of having the funds.

it's a build man. i wouldn't run that camber on a track first off, and secondly all i did was put wheels on the car. the cobalt is known for doing well on the track, and with my coilover setup, some mods to the control arm bushings (i have plans, legit ones) and a little more work to the rear i think it would kill on a road course even with obscene fitment. 240's do it all day why can't i?

Because you don't have a 240? Different things work for different cars man your car is on the line of dangerous with that much negative camber in the rear I wouldn't get any were close to you if it was raining out. Looks cool but thats it, there is in NO way that will ever be functional.

shakotan is a style....
and the only reason i said boarderlined VIP is because its all black, on polished wheels, and it has teh "VIP" pipes
1. shakotan means lowered vehicle or car, look it up. Unless you are saying lowered car is a style then whatever. I just don't like it when people use japanese words for things they don't understand. Kinda like bros with kanji tattoos they think says "I'm a beast" when it really says "my mom is a beast in bed"
2. the pipes are NOT VIP they are more boso if anything
personally i think you are trying too hard. Nothing rat rod about it at all except maybe that its dirty and you are using zipties to put broken peices back together. I think your old fartcan painted black with a little poke looked better than what youve got now but thats just me.
the wheels are meh. But I don't really like the corvette wheels on any car besides a corvette. Yours would probably be the first i'd say i can agree with the decision to put them on being that its a chevy. There's even a guy in my crew who has some. I don't like em but thats his car and his decision. People think they look good. I'm just not crazy about them
Its your car do what you like. I **** cobalts, so its hard to make me a lover of your car but i'm not gonna **** on you just cuz you drive a cobalt. But being "different" by modding a cobalt won't keep you from getting ***** either. just sayin

this is all criticism, and in this thread it is greatly encouraged and accepted here. what i've left in bold, well, when i keep saying rat rodded cobalt i really just picture it as being my car all beat up and used from the drop, the dents and dings, the irreversible de-valueing of the car, and all that stuff. one thing for instance, i love that my front lip is beat because it gives the car character. when you see this thing driving down the road and have seen stanced vw's and such, seeing this car is a huge wtf.
and just to be clear, i don't care that my fitment is "too much" or there's too much camber or whatever. i didn't do it get on hella flush or anything, i just like the look so like i said criticism is cool but don't take me for some fool just throwing wheels, coils and lips on cars to get some street cred. i guarantee none of a certain few posting here have never custom adapted coilovers or done a mini tub on your fender wells. it took a lot of work to get where i am, and i don't expect a standing ovation or a trophy but i am happy with my work and all of you paying for labor rates at shops, well, i win that one.

on the first part i agree it gives a car character, gives it a story.
on the second part thats what i tried to explain earlier. You are making youself out like a martyr. Like you are the only one who has it hard. Shops around here wouldn't put coils on my cressida if i asked them to let alone know what they are.
I've only been on stanceworks for a little minute. However i know from experience with other car forums that ain't as nice as this one, and just guys who like cars to know that if you don't check the holier than thou attitude they are going to come down on you hard and fast.
you aren't special regardless of what your mommy says. You don't have it harder than anyone else. A modded cobalt isn't "WTF" different from a VW like you said. Its more like "make me puke in my mouth a little" different just because its a cobalt. With that said i did mention earlier that i liked your cobalt when i first started reading the thread. But you crossed a point in which it seemed like you were trying to hard and trying to incorporate too many styles. basically your car lacks focus.
ok that was my $.12 I'm not trying to bash you for your car, just your attitude. whilst giving you a few tips along the way.
P.S. I haven't had any sleep in over 24 hours so sorry if this is incoherent.
P.P.S you ain't the first one to tub fenders. When you go in and cut the entire fender out of the back and build new ones out of trailer fenders, and cut the fender out of the front and rock underhood fenderless for awhile because ur lazy, then you let me know until then

i feel you man, it's still a build in the process. i would much rather have a clean car to work with but my wallet doesn't have room for a whole new front bumper, fenders and lip. they've just been through so much rolling, rubbing and scraping that they're just shot and i'm trying to use it to the car's advantage. i like the race car, beat up from the track look. i have some better ideas in my head, just a matter of deciding on what to do. nothing i've done to this car has really cost me more than 200 dollars at once so my budget also decides what happens here.

rear fitment may just be laid to rest. wait about a week i'm gonna order some more adapters. probably 2 inch instead of 2.3 so i can lose a little camber.

totally love this ride1
good work on the wheel n stance.
couldnt you just mill the adapters down a bit to tuck them in a tiny bit? work out how much inner clearance you had and taken that much off the adapter?
they look chunky as hell. i run 18mm on my ones. lol
keep it up still.

i wouldn't modify anything that roatates really cause it could seriously mess up the balance. i mean i'm sure i could pull it off, but these spacers are pretty nice and i wanna keep it that way. i like the crazy poke and camber, so hell if i can make it work like i just did then why the hell not? btw your car is stoopid low!

Ha ha. Thanx dude.
I love how ur rear sit. I'm gone do that to my rear RSs when they r built.
I'm just thinkin the fronts. I have H&R adapters ad had them milled down properly. The ones with speed bolts like yours are easier to mill down.

all i gotta say is DOPE.. i know u like the zip ties but i say cut ends off. and since u already have damage to rear fenders give them a pull, put some more positive camber on the rear and u will be PERFECT im tellin u! i know fender pull is hard work, and expensive if u have someone else do it, but it will be worth it if u wanna run that setup. best car ive seen on vettes if this is done!

even the track cars clip the zip tie ends off... just sayin :)

I really like the wheels, but not really a fan of anything else. the "beat up" look works better for older cars. kinda feel like you're just letting a perfectly good car go to shit for the sake of fitting in with the 240 guys. I do give you props for doing what you want despite others' opinions.

^ haha cool man. i mean like i said i picked up the car cuz it's a ballsy 4 cyl, always grew up liking boso and drift style. this car's sort of a melting pot of my inspiration. i feel you though, trust me if 2 winters ago didn't take my front lip from me this car would be a lot cleaner. it'll get there.

been having a problem with this...stopped the rubbing for now with an angled grinder :shifty:
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs1221.snc4/155353_10150316311275541_587965540_15863543_343129 _n.jpg
a man with the right tools can get the job done (and being friends with people that can blend over a prepped panel phewie!)
after this i'm gonna lose a little camber and the poke will be intense but the more subtle camber and extremely pulled/flattened fenders should make it look still agressive just not as clownish.

thanks man. i was actually not too satisfied with how it came out, so i put more filler on it and got it baby bottom smooth. it looks really professional now, and i hope whoever i let paint this thing can do a nice job. i'm seriously impressed by myself. i didn't think it was going to come out this good.

I just read through this whole build. Some stuff is wtf are you doing, other stuff is pretty cool. The youtube vid was nice, even on stock wheels it looked good rolling and sounded kinda cool. My only complaint is that it's not clean. I know that's the look you want, but it could be heaps better by taking off half the dangly bits and stickers. I like the work you've put into it though, keep posting so I can continue to enjoy what you're doing.
:)
Edit: A car can have character without looking like shit. Not that yours does, but I'm just saying.
I'm gonna have to agree with nick here.
When you say you don't have a budget to keep it clean, that just doesn't make sense to me. Don't spend money on stickers and other nonsense and presto chango you'll have more of a budget for big things. Sorry man, I'm just really not feeling it. There's so much going on and it really detracts from the overall look

Paper thin fenders for the win!!!!! ........... I wrapped my tires in tin foil and masking tape,,,, and fiberglassed over the tin foil..... while the suspension was at full drop
Fiberglass doesn't stick to tin foil....... and it will keep your tires and rims looking clean......... the key is having the car at full drop..... or no suspension and use a jack to raise the tires into the fenders

very cool idea. i managed to do it without glass, and man did it come out sick. i'm finally done now, just gotta get it to the body shop saturday to get sprayed. the pictures you see were sorta rough, i actually re-did everything and made it super clean. it looks professional and done right. i really impressed myself with how good this came out.

you don't have to apologize for not liking my car. the front will be done right soon, just like everything else is coming together. but the dangly and obnoxious things like my camber, tow ring, stickers, netc, are not going anywhere. i'm finally making decent money and i'm literally spending all of it on this car. but again, don't be sorry. and mostly don't get mad :P

The only thing that I really didn't like about your car before was the awkward looking rear fitment, and it looks like that's getting sorted pretty well. Stoked to see this finished, and props for using such a different car in the first place.
