First mod:
Just swapped the front lighting (Depo Headlights, smoked TYC turns, diy blacked out fogs) over from my sedan:
http://www.abload.de/img/touringfrontiw4p.jpg
As you can see, very dirty. Should look very good once the car is clean.
However, I'm thinking I want some darker turns.

Coils are in, just swapped them over from the sedan without adjusting anything.
Going to adjust them a bit tomorrow, but before I go really low, I gotta fix my loose hanging heat shield of the catalytic converter, because thats limiting my ground clearance.

Once all the snow is gone, I'll be mounting the tails and the M3 rear bumper I have lying around. Don't want to do it before then as I'm a bit afraid of some dumbass sliding into my car's rear, lol. Once that stuff is mounted, i'll take some pics... those will actl be the last pics before I finish the exterior, I want to post the next pics once everything is done.
Hoping to drop off the wheels for powder coating in the next 2 weeks.

Dr.AK
01-15-2010, 07:55 AM
Doing my best to get stuff done.
I'm actually just waiting for my TÜV contact to call me back, I talked with him earlier and he said he's going to look into 215/35/18s all around for the touring which would normally not be possible due to the load ratings. We're trying to have the max load of the car reduced by about 130kg and he's currently looking to see if he can make this work. If he can, I can legally mount 215/35s all around with TÜV approval. If he gives me the okay I will finally be able to order tires and drop the wheels of for powder coating.
My goal is to have it all done by the start of april since thats when the german bimmer shows start up again.

I'm going to crank the coils down a bit today, I think 0.5inch, mount the 18s and on friday drop the car of for getting the fenders rolled and the coils and wheels TÜV approved, after that I'll swap over to winter tires again.
So expect some pics in the next few days with my dad's silver Style 32s... I'm actively comparing prices for powder coating now so it won't be all that long before my set of Style 32s will be lime green.:eyebrows

Now that I've seen them on the car, I'm not sure I want them green anymore. With the silver it just looks so fucking cleaaaaaaan (even though the car is super dirty, haha).
The rear will come down a few mms, the trunk is currently completely empty, no spare tire, no subwoofer & amp, missing a few misc cover panels etc. Once that stuff is in, all in all should be a good 40 - 50kg, the rear will settle a few more mms.

Hey,
1. The wheels are TÜV-Approved now. Rear fenders are rolled and the rear will come down 5mm, front is the lowest I can go without rubbing. I'll leave it like it is for now, and maybe see about getting a stiffer set of coils and rolled / slightly flared front fenders for 2011 so I can go down 5 - 10mm in the front. Rear will be adjusted accordingly then.
2. Tomorrow it's back on wintertires. Ugly time! :(
3. I've settled on a shiny silver for the 18s because it looks damn classy like this.

Hey,
1.
I've said it a few times before but never supplied pics. This stuff is lying in my garage currently, going to be mounted next month when I have some more time on my hands.
http://www.abload.de/img/img_8448ta3x.jpg
A replica front bumper will be ordered this week as well.
2.
Since I'll shortly be ordering the front bumper, I've been thinking about what lip to mount.... I'd like to hear your thoughts please.
Option 1
Stock M3 lip with M3 GT splitters. Cheapest option, because the stock M3 lips comes with the bumper I'll order and replica splitters would cost me about 40€. But I'm not really a fan of the open space between the splitters.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2647/4133260884_a07c4e70e9_o.jpg
Option 2
Mattig lip, painted flack blat. About 100€. But it's fibreglass, which I don't want really.
http://www.mattig.de/content/components/com_phpshop/shop_image/product/8201271090_2.jpg
Option 3
Get a Max Velocity lip imported from the states. Very high price, 250$ / 185€ + shipping from the US to Germany + customs fees.
http://www.maxvelocity.net/gallery/full_e36_vls_rs_4.jpg
Option 4
Leave the stock M3 lip and rape my front fenders and / or put some slight bump stops in so I can lower the front so it looks good without an addition lip.
http://image.europeancarweb.com/f/9050795/0301_01zoom+1995_e36_m3+front_view.jpg
Stock lip with out the splitters.
And get some pictures up, where the car aint filthy. :alright
*edit.
Well, here is a picture of my car. Just with the single lip, with out the splitters.
http://i38.tinypic.com/2w6e7nb.jpg
As you can see, its not that much of a difference, the hight difference between bumper/road and side skirts/road. And now it even less, because i raised the rear after fitting spacers.
The lip low is not that awesome in my book.
As you stated, its all about wheel gap. If you don't run 24'' you will end up with a low car.
Dr.AK
02-14-2010, 11:05 PM
Yeah, just edited my post a bit.
How low are you? You're on 18s too, right? What's your wheel/tire specs and how much ground clearance to you have under your m3 lip and under your frame rails??
When I had the car TÜVed, they drove it up on two ramps (one front left, one rear right) to test the suspension travel... when steering, the front wheels got stuck on the fender at full lock. I would like to go down another 10mm in the front, but I'm not too sure if I can get away with just a small bump stop and a steering angle restrictor (is that correct? bmw installs these things oem when over a certain tire size).
Also, no new pics for a while, since the car is back on wintertires... ;) Just had the 18s on for a 2 days to get this isht approved by the TÜV. We got pretty heavy snow here and I never would drive with summer tires on snow like that. The 2 days I had to do this when getting the car approved were scary enough... braking, what's that?

Front bumper is going to the painter next week if I can make it.
As for M-mirrors...
NEVER, EVER will I install M-Mirrors on any car I own. I **** them with a passion. In fact, if I ever were to buy a car with them on, even if it is an M3, I'd straight rip them off and replace them either with the stock blocky mirrors, which fit the shape of the E36 about 1000000000 times better, or with some aftermarket mirrors like the Hartge ones or something.

Looking good, just need the little lip, just like on your dads car. Cant wait for the for the car to be done.
Yeah, I was going to install the lip today as well... but the bumper is an aftermarket replica. The lip as well, got the bumper including moldings, the mesh in the center and the lip as a big package, so you'd think stuff would actually fit, right?
The bumper fits absolutely perfect on the car.
The mesh in the bumper didn't really fit. I had to actually plastic-weld it in because it wouldn't stay on, and it came off on one side once it was on the car because I apparently didn't melt enough material on one side, going to re-weld that next time the bumper is off.
The lip didn't fit at all and was even a bit bent. Going to source another one soon, but wheels have priority right now.
Lesson learned, next time I'll buy OEM parts.
Ah okey, at least your getting a lip.
I had some metal mesh on my car, when i bought it. Looked like crap in my opinion. So i bought the oem plastic mesh, and just used some Würth plastic glue, to hold it in place. (same glue, to fix bumpers etc)

Finally got word from the powder coater, can pick up my wheels on monday.
I think a bit more than a week and the wheels will be on, can't wait haha.
Tho, I'm currently looking at a few suspension parts...
I want excentric M3 3.2 strut bearings in the front, because those add more camber when you mount them reversed left to right. And I'm looking at adjustable lower control arms for the rear to add some more camber in the rear to even it out with the front. Might need to add some slight spacers in the rear then... God, I'm retarded, haha.

It's lower than my dad's ti. No rubbing in the rear, slight rubbing in the front while cornering. Going to add some... uhh... spring limiters? Is that the right word? Anyways, going to add these to the front in a few days to stop the rubbing.
Now I'm not so sure anymore about the plan with the added camber... I'll let you guys judge for yourself once I've taken some pics.

Okay... bad news.
The rear needs more work. It doesnt rub on the tire, but it rubs on the wheel. :(
I' think I'll raise it up 5mm and add a few spring limiters (?) and see about more camber.
Ideally I'd have the rear fenders done a bit more by a bodyshop, but I don't have any money for that currently.

I'm hoping to find the time soon to get both my Touring and my dad's Compact together for a photoshoot.
I just had the chance to see my car drive from the outside today, drove my dad to the body shop to pick up my parents E39 (some prick backed into it last week), and drove the E39 on the way back. Damn, does my Touring look baller when it's rolling through the streets. I'm real proud of what I've built, haha.

Seriously, paint on the roof is fucked beyond all repair, hood may need a repaint too...
As it is, I'm thinking a repaint for some parts is in order once the rusty parts have been swapped out, after that the car will get a good detail to get all the parts equally shiny.

i m inspired to run the same fitment on my e36 sedan - did you solve your rubbing problem now with more rollin?
Will fender rollin solve this problem or camber is required?
if I roll front & rear fenders as much as possible, u reckon there will be still be rubbing during cornering or with heavy load in the car?:confused

The front fits fine now, there was some slight rubbing while cornering, but some slight bump stops fixed that.
The rear... I raised it up as I lack the funds to either get the rears rolled more (they're already rolled, but not completely flat) by a shop, or have the rear arches repainted if I do it myself (as I'm quite certain I'm more likely to fuck up the paint than a shop or somthing).
Here is how it sits currently, rear is slightly raised up from the last pics and it fits fine now!

For the fronts, rolling is not necessary. Your suspension just has to be stiff enough, if it rubs, some slight bump stops will fix your problem here. No need to roll.
For the rears, either don't crank it as low or roll the rears more than I have (i.e. roll them completely flat).

Yes, they clear the stock brakes without any problems at all. There's actually plenty of room to mount way bigger brakes. In fact, I do have some vague plans to mount the E46 330i front brake sometime next year, those are 325mm in diameter.
Just want you to know: your car has officially helped me decide on my next DD/ project. It's gorgeous!!!

A small update.
You guys remember that back when I put the wheels on, I cranked the car lower and the rear had rubbing issues of the wheel lip rubbing against the fender? I cranked it back up 1 cm back then which apparently fixed the problem.
Not so easy, though... The shocks afterall were 2 years and slightly over 50.000 kms old. Soooo... they were worn, which led to the rear of the car sagging a little lower. Wich caused quite some wheel rub.
http://www.abload.de/img/8n6sr.jpg
:(
Long story short, I replaced the rear shocks today with some cheap TA Technix shocks, which fixed the problem. They're not great, but they'll do for the time being. Once the fronts become worn, I'll install a complete new set of coils anyways. Old ones were so done for, one of them didn't even decompress anymore when you compressed the shock.

E38 hub is the same as the E36. Only E39, X5 and X6 have a bigger hub. The E38 fit wheels are a direct fit, perfect OEM sizing for the E36.

But since I'll need to repair it... the car won't see the road in 2011. Maybe not even 2012. Since I'll need to do work anyways, I figured I can take this as a chance to finally to everything I've always dreamed of to the car.
Bodywork, new paint, complete suspension overhaul, interior overhaul (mostly the stereo), more power...

I'll just copy & paste some parts from my thread over at BFc:
Ok peeps,
It's finally the time that I will start a rebuild of my Touring. Keep in mind, this will not be an extreme build, but it will be enough to keep me busy for some time.
What I'm working with:
1997 BMW 323iA Touring
230.000kms currently
Automatic
Cosmosschwarz
I've also located a usable workshop, a former barn owned by a relative. The previous tenant is still in there and I'm only waiting on him to leave so I can take the Touring and move in there - should happen sometime in the next few weeks, february at the latest.
My wheels have been sold by now, the new owner drives a cosmos Touring as well.
So... now for the interesting part.
The Plans
I'll try to list it here in more or less the order I want to tackle things
Complete suspension rework
The previous set of AP coils will be removed and the car will either receive a custom set of H&R coils - shortened about a few cms with stiff springs and appropriately valved shocks, basically along the same line as the Stanceworks/AST Zero Clearance Coilovers... but with the added benefit of actually being able to have them TÜV approved which is impossible with the ZCCs because of missing papers and stuff - or on some kind of air ride suspension. I'm strongly leaning towards the H&R coils though. Apart from the suspension itself, I will be replacing all bearings, bushings and what not of course.
Wheels
The new wheels will be a set of Rial Mesh wheels in 8.5x17 ET13 and 9.5x17 ET20. The wheels are already bought and are currently sitting in my garage. Tires will most likely be 205/40 and 215/40. The wheels will either be fully polished with the pockets offset in black OR only the dish will be polished and the centers painted in a dark silver or some kind of metallic gray / gunmetal.
http://www.abload.de/img/rials37qg8.jpg
Bodywork
I will have to rework the fenders for more clearance for the new wheels and the lowness I'm aiming for. Also, the car needs some areas adressed because of rust. The front doors and rear hatch are rusty and need to be replaced. In case of the rear hatch I may be able to remove the rust instead of replacing the hatch, but the front doors are rusted through. Rear doors are rust free but have quite some dings in them. The front passenger side fender also needs to be replaced because of some shoddily welded damage repair done by the previous owner (covered by the M skirts). This will all be done by myself, but I will also need to drop the car off at a body shop to have the rear quarter panel fixed from where I slid into the sign pole. After all the bodywork is done, the car will receive a respray in Cosmosblack.
Interior
I want to replace the front seats with sports seats but also add the lumbar support from my normal seats to the sports seats. A black headliner and pillars will also be done. Apart from that, my main concern is the stereo, I will keep my head unit but apart from that I'll basically redo the whole system. Mainly, I'll be redoing the trunk area and hiding the amp (or amps as the case may be when I'm finished) underneath the floar and building a nice enclosure to fit the subwoofer in so it integrates well into the trunk area. I'm not sure yet about the front speakers - most likely I'll just replace them with a good 13cm compo system, but maybe I'll install some doorboards.
Power
I do want more power, but to keep the build manageable and actually able to finish it, I will limit myself to a M50 intake and software. That should be good to bring me up to 328i power figures. I'll also be building an exhaust using Magnaflow parts.
This is what I'm evisioning somewhat.
http://www.abload.de/img/touringvisionhmaa.jpg
I think that should be it for now.
Sorry, no progress on the build yet as like I stated, I'm still waiting on the workshop to be free so I can move in there.
I'm open for suggestions and ideas on the rebuild though.
No updates as of yet, still looking for a workshop... I did some thinking and I might resort to using my parent's garage. It's a bit too narrow for work, so I'd have to roll the Touring out whenever I do something, but at least I could store it in there. The problem is that my parents use it as a storage area for their bookstore... I still live at my parent's and occupy a bit more room than needed so I might be able to convince them to do a trade off... I get the garage and they get one of my rooms as a storage area. I'd actually prefer this solution since it'd allow me to do the rebuild without having to pay rent for a workshop and without having to drive to said shop.

Rebuild won't be happening due to financial reasons.
Car will be taken off the road due to me having my licence suspended.
I had an accident on the Autobahn with my company car. Don't really remember how it happened, but I hit a woman in a Toyota Aygo and she hit the barrier and flipped over. She was badly hurt. My licence was suspended for now - they will keep it until the court date at least.
Now I'm facing the costs for a lawyer and the court date and maybe even a big fine depending on what the judge rules.
Also, I was fired from work.
So, nothing will be happening here. Worst case, I'll have to sell the Touring.

So this is what you could call "Teufelskreis" in German you lost your licence because of a accident you had while working and because you lost your licence you could lose your Job
Isn´t there any Chance of getting the Licence back because you need it for working ??

Not really, sadly. All depends on the court date and the judges ruling now.

Yes, of course.

Wieso denn Automatik?
Rebuild won't be happening due to financial reasons.
Car will be taken off the road due to me having my licence suspended.
I had an accident on the Autobahn with my company car. Don't really remember how it happened, but I hit a woman in a Toyota Aygo and she hit the barrier and flipped over. She was badly hurt. My licence was suspended for now - they will keep it until the court date at least.
Now I'm facing the costs for a lawyer and the court date and maybe even a big fine depending on what the judge rules.
Also, I was fired from work.
So, nothing will be happening here. Worst case, I'll have to sell the Touring.
damn... sorry to hear this.. hope everything end good..!!!!:(

I'll refurb the Brocks myself, put some 215/40s on and maybe some spacers and call it a day.
Rials will come once I've fixed all the damage to the car, since that stuff is more important. They will be polished or something like that and receive some 205/40 or 215/35 for the fronts and 225/35 for the rears.

Okay...
Good News:
I ordered a fender. :D Hope it's as good as it looks on pictures.
Bad News:
Ran into a lot of problems privately. To make a long story short, professional repaint and wheel polish is out of my price range. I'll be doing everything I can myself and try to complete the car on a VERY tight budget.
This also means that I'll paint it myself. Most likely matte.
It's not the direction I wanted to go in, but I can't afford a professional repaint in Marrakesch.
Still debating on an exact color, but I've pretty much settled on something like this:

Today I tried fitting the kidney grille.
http://www.abload.de/img/nierenblechjri1.jpg
Harder than expected because something was not right.
After a bit of fiddling around, I made it fit, mainly after adjusting the passenger fender some more (and enlarging the hole where it screws to the kidney grille :shifty ).
http://www.abload.de/img/dscn1769v7uc.jpg
But during the process I found that the passenger side of the grille is a bit bent. :( Nothing I can't fix though, but annoying.
http://www.abload.de/img/dscn1770l7cv.jpg
So far so good, everything fits together reasonably well and only the kidney grille needs some adjusting.
Took the front apart to start some work on the grille, namely doing some de-rusting as it had some slight spots where the rust was starting to form, nothing major though or I wouldn't have bought it.

Dr.AK
07-12-2011, 03:57 PM
Update.
First, I finished sanding and fillering the front panel. Still needs some slight touch up, but it's almost good to go.
http://www.abload.de/img/niernblechry7i.jpg
Then I went on to the suspension...
I reassembled the drivers side strut using a new shock absorber supplied by KW (as the AP coils are identic to KW V1, but the shocks actually are a bit different... the KW shock is about 5mm shorter) and excentric M3 3,2l strut bearings (mounted in the 'wrong direction' to get more negative camber). Also gave it a slight clean.
http://www.abload.de/img/federbeinrcj1.jpg
Then I thought... Okay, the M3 strut bearings will give me more camber, let's see how it looks with the untouched AP strut with the stock strut bearing first.
So I slapped a 8.5 on the passenger side.
http://www.abload.de/img/8_5er_acg4s.jpg
Poke.
And I discovered this.
http://www.abload.de/img/bremssattelalib.jpg
:( Wheel sits flush against the caliper when mounted.
I knew Ollie on here ran some spacers in the front when he had his Rials to clear the brakes, but I hoped that I would get away without running any as his M3 has bigger brakes than my 323i. As it is, I will need a slight spacer up front to clear them. I'll order a set of 6mm hubcentric spacers (narrowest hubcentric ones i can get with necessary TÜV papers) tomorrow.
Anyways, then I mounted the drivers side strut in the car.
Here you can see how the M3 3.2l strut bearing moves the mounting of the strut itself. It doesn't look like it, but it does move inward quite a bit. But also rearwards which will give me different caster. I hope this won't give me any problems later.
http://www.abload.de/img/fahrerseite6huf.jpg
And slapped the 8.5 on to see how the camber is.
http://www.abload.de/img/fahrerseite2oy68.jpg
A quick comparison on the steelies, can't really see it all that much but it's quite a difference.
Left is stock, right is the excentric 3.2l strut bearings.

I've got the same front top mounts. Is that how they're supposed to be mounted? I've put mine on with the arrows pointed towards the wings....
Dr.AK
07-12-2011, 05:56 PM
It's not 100% how they should be mounted, as I mounted them on the wrong sides purposely for more neg. camber. The top hat you see up there is supposed to be for the passenger side (driver's side for you).
However, the arrow should point to the front of the car.
nellydragracer
07-12-2011, 06:10 PM
Ahh I see, you've switched the l/h side with the r/h side. The arrows pointing forwards makes sense but I needed quite alot of camber and mounted them as previously described with no ill effects.
Dr.AK
07-12-2011, 06:23 PM
Actually, wether the arrow points forward or backwards won't make a difference in terms of camber. It will however, change your caster.
Dr.AK
07-16-2011, 10:24 AM
Sooooooooo.
I got my BBS RF in today.
The plan was, to run the Rials and refinish the BBS slowly next year... but after I mounted them up for a quick look-see... I'm blown away. I MUST drive these wheels. Else I'll never be satisfied. I'm absolutely in love.
I'm selling the Rials to fund the refinishing of the BBS.
Two of the outer lips are slightly bent, so I'll drop them off at a wheel refinisher's place soon to get them redone with straight lips... polished lips of course. Centers will stay as is for now.

Like I said earlier, I won't say anything regarding the color. You'll just have to wait and see.

1. I just dropped off the BBS at the wheel shop to have them straightened and polished. They should be ready by the end of next week, apparently.
2. I finally received notice that my paint has finally shipped. Should arrive in the next few days.

My paint arrived. :D
What color is that? Oh, and some advice: DO NOT USE THE CAPS THAT COME WITH THE CANS! Experienced that myself....they're bullshit for paintwork on metal!
Also is that matte or glossy clear?
