Hey, I am in the process of refinishing my 3-piece wheels and I am unsure of how to get the lips apart from the barrels. I have already gotten the centers out which was fairly easy, but im not exactly sure how to go about splitting the rest and what would be best to use in the process.

Thanks for any input.

what type of wheels? some need heat (bbs), others just need force.

Like they said a rubber hammer or deadblow and a block of wood, then remove the sealer as shown here. :D

Use a stanley knife to slice through the sealant around the barrell before using the hammer.

Arizona sun works well. Can you get that where you are?

I put mine on the grill. haha. It worked like a charm, just make sure you use some oven mits when taking them off.

They are OZ's. So I'm guessing a heat gun will be my best option, or something similar. How about a propane torch? I have several of those in my garage, just carefully work around the edge.

Futuras. Now I just need to figure out what to do with the bolts. Ideally I would like them anodized a purple color or some kind of paint/powder/something. But have no clue where to start or where I could have them sent to.

maybe put a thread up on the wichita or kc bmw sites and see if there is a local place that would powder bolts. I seem to remember talking to someone local about coating bolts.

you can also use a widow maker and "jack" the halves apart.

Is it even necessary to separate them? Im just going to be cleaning them up and doing a little more polishing on the lips, and painting the centers. Or because I have already taken them half apart should I continue and redo all the sealing?

If you think you can polish with them together I wouldn't even bother taking them apart, there really is no purpose other than for ease of use. The only reason I would really take a set apart is to add bigger lips so leave em as is, they are sealed perfect right now.

how are you polishing the lips? The heat generated from a pedestal mount will affect the seal if you dont seperate.

I'd run a stanley round the join and carefully tap round the lip with a rubber or dead blow mallet, shouldnt really require heat tbh, have the wheels been split since the factory?

but use a sharp stanley and go round the seal first before you do anything

I highly doubt you'd get enough heat on the lip from any sort of polishing to get the silicone to seperate...

Remember the silicone holds up under extremely hot days and hours upon hours of running hard turns, a bit of polishing is not going to do anything.

I've redone my set on my braids and never have gotten the lip anywhere near warm...

pop them in the oven 300 for about 15min

Thanks guys, I think I will just be leaving them together though. And im not sure how I am going to go about doing this yet. I have had a shop quote me $150 per wheel to have the lips polished, centers painted, and reassembled. Sound like a good deal? Im still debating on finishing up the polishing my self though as they are already sanded up quite well.

How would you polish around the bolts?

The bolts are out, but there is a lot of silicone/sealer still holding them together.

Oh...haha, that makes more sense. It was a BITCH getting Sean's RSs to split, so I don't blame you for not wanting to do it. :D

i just split my futuras earlier this week. i cut the silicon with a box cutter then tapped them witha hammer and used a small screw driver to get a lil room so i could use my fingures and pull them apart. im doing a full polish on mine. lets see some pics
