BMW are fine vehicles. When you start cutting coils, you'll damage your suspension. You're not driving an 87 Monte Carlo with springs the size of John Deer tractors. You cut out of a little car's spring and you will have a car that sags, bottoms out, corners like trash, but is a little lower.
Go save some money, buy some H&R sport springs and stop being such a hilly billy.

Half. Not kidding. I drove for almost a year like that with NO problems. Didn't even ride bad or blow my shocks(some how). Bumps are a little rough, but otherwise, go for it.

Lol at not realizing most e28s here are rolling cut springs.

Obviously this is the optimal route to take, but spending $1200+ on coils for a $1000 car sometimes isn't the most umm, economical? Lol.

It's a fucking 1980's five series lol, chop that shit up.
2.5 off each end is a nice start for a "sport" drop, and the car will still ride like factory excluding MASSIVE bumps. You can go further as necessary.

How much would you cut if you had SPAX springs?

just an update, I ended up cutting 3 before I noticed how close the pan was to the ground. I still need to get the new 16's mounted and the skid plate on before I cut anymore but I'm sure it will be at least another 1/2 coil.
for fun I threw some 18's on the rear (front wouldn't clear strut)

I already have lowering springs but they're not low enough with Bilstein shocks. How much should I cut? Do you guys cut the springs while they are still on the car or should I remove them first?

The springs are probably under pressure, so if I were you I would remove them first...
Please do start saving for coilovers though, it's worth it;)

If the car is raised up and the spring isn't compressed at all, go ahead and cut with them on the car. Otherwise definitely take them off to avoid injury.

Runningpanda is running 3 coils up front and 2 in the back...(not cut, total) on all stock suspension. Get that bitch on the ground.

I cut 5 in the rear, 3.5 in the front. Don't know if non-sport suspensions will be different... IS's got a Bilstien setup.

Hi Budski,
from experience, cutting two coils from the rear standard springs of my E28, and one and a half coils from the front, the car sat perfect and it actually stiffened up the ride. I was very happy with it... for a few weeks.
then i tried to go mega low, and cut more coils, and ended up with a horrible bouncy ride.
so from my experience, dont go over one and a half from the front, and two from the rear unless you want to ruin the ride.

did you cut your bump stops at all when you cut 2 from the back and 1.5 from the front?
