hi all, another aussie here. been registered on here for a month or so now, lurking, lusting over some of the sweet cars on here. made my way over from bf.c. this is my bmw e21 320i. bodys nothing special, but its a hell of a lot of fun. few mods to it at the moment, plenty more to come
list of stuff i can remember that ive done
diy coilovers with koni adjustables all round
lancer full adjustable strut tops
cbr1100 bike carbs
homemade front strut brace
mostly stripped interior - no sound deadener, no carpet, basic door trims.
stereo consists of a ebay 20w amp, 2 4x6" kenwood speakers and my mobile phone
camber/toe adjustable rear bushes
2 tone paint
exhaust hole smoothed and dump pipe fitted
several sets of wheels to choose from
thats about all i can think of off the top of my head, probably more
future plans are:
paint spare front guards and bonnet and put on, so its all one shade of blue
new bigger radiator(sitting in shed waiting til i get time)
cam for current motor
5spd box thats sitting in shed
alu flywheel
booster delete and all round brake upgrade(half way through collecting/making parts)
front suspension upgrade(heim joints, swaybar change)
then when i get bored with the cammed bmw motor, i have an sr20det sitting in the shed, gt2860r turbo, alu flywheel, s13 5spd box, r33 lsd diff to go in
pics time
currently on sportmax 513's 15x7 et15 with 195/45 up front and 16x8 et0 with 245/35 in the rear(need to poke the fronts out some more, got a plan, but wont happen for a while, dont want to use spacers)

yeh, id love some real wheels, but at the end of the day, id rather spend money on parts to make it handle better and go faster before i spend it on better wheels
i do try and keep my eye out for cheap bbs stuff on ebay over here in aus, but it doesnt come up often(or cheap). dont feel like taking the plunge of getting some imported from o/s just yet.

fuuuuck!
awesome! i did never seen this thread and i planned to order the exact same wheels as you (the 513s), it would be great but fotunatley i found something different!
really clean E21, can't wait to show you mine in the "build threads", some weeks and i will have a some things to show!
have a question, what rate of spring do you use?
i ordered some 250lbs for front and 200 for rear, my friend riding a 6cyl told me it was really to soft, i ride a 4cyl and i do not mount them yet so before re-order some springs i wanted to ask.
again, really clean and nice looking E21!
hakhawk
02-08-2010, 06:41 AM
will keep an eye out for your thread then, always good to see another neat e21.
i going to hopefully paint the roof and front end soon, so it all matches.
im running 350lb up front, and 250lb in the rear(with factory swaybar)
what wheels did you go with?
ollycarbs
02-08-2010, 08:00 AM
hey thanks for the rates, is it really stiff or still a bit confortable, i will put the 250lb in the rear and re-order some 350lb for the front.
so far i have all the 323i drivetrain hardware components, it misses some balljoints, handbrake cables and other little parts, i weld some coilover conversion kits on the front strut housings and i shorten them from 1,5" to fit E30 shocks, i won Bilstein B6 for E30 yesterday on ebay.de so i expect to build all that in early march.
i still have to find a company to zincplate the front strut housings.
for the wheels, i had some wide 13" french 3 pieces wheels for years named PLS 413 but it is too small for E21 or my other project (B1 passat) so i found a guy having some wide PLS Le Mans (for the story, i am native from Le Mans) in 15" wanting some 13" for his mk1 golf, we trade yesterday but the guy is from where my mum lives at 600kms from me so i will have my wheels in 3 weeks now, when she will come back working there... the wheels are something like 7,5 and 9x15" in good condition and with big tires... i will swap the 195/50 off of the front on the 9" and throw out the 225/50 to put 185/45 on the 7.5"...
the new wheels:
https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=2&ik=d94d0d676f&view=att&th=126a387d373c8668&attid=0.4&disp=inline&realattid=f_g5cg75vy6&zw
wow, with all i said i think i really have to do my own thread!
Sorry!
Can't wait to see your car with roof and front end colour matched!
Thanks,
UnitedWeStance...

will be putting megajolt ecu on it when my edis stuff arrives, and pissing off the distributor. also have remote oil filter and oil cooler to put on when i get hose and fittings, and make an adaptor to replace the oil filter housing.
also slowly setting up boosterless brakes, with wilwood powerlite calipers on each corner, scalloped rotors on the front, 2 piece rotors on the rear
(ignore the rear rotors, turns out i bought the wrong ones, and cant get scalloped rears for the hats i have, waiting for payday so i can order new ones from jegs)

umm can i get edumacated about the rotors? how come/why arent they perfectly round?
strips some weight off them without totally sacrificing diameter and pad surface area, its mostly about weight.
jared1988
04-03-2010, 08:10 AM
and the big holes help with getting rid of the gas? that doesnt cause the pad to wear unevenly?
hakhawk
04-03-2010, 08:13 AM
as far as i know, theres really not much in the way of gas in pads anymore, not since they got rid of asbestos.
shouldnt cause uneven wear, nothing ive seen anyone complain about anyway. i may end up with normal rotors on the front aswell, depends how these go.

coz of the e30 5spd swap in, with custom tailshaft, its moved the whole motor forward a bit. luckily i went the 2002 water pump, or the fan shroud wouldnt fit. ive had to cut the sheilding bits off the fan as it is, but its got a decent amount of clearance to the fan itself now. will see how it goes though!!

cheers guys, heres some more mods for your enjoyment :p
this weekend was dedicated to getting my ecu running, which i did!!
first things first, i scraped my bumper for the first time yesterday, forgot and reversed out a parking lot wrong, and it scraped backwards, and took a couple chunks out. no biggie
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/Imgp0627.jpg
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/Imgp0628.jpg
wired the edis module up under glovebox, only place i could find that wasnt in the way, or in enginebay
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/ignition/Imgp0631.jpg
wired the ecu up and mounted it beside my cheap ass "headunit"
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/ignition/Imgp0630.jpg
ok, so the edis kit that i got for the ecu came with coil on plug, but they wont fit with the current brake system where it is(another reason on the list to piss it off :p)
so, knowing i can use commodore coilpacks(the edis system is wasted spark, like vn-vs v6 commodores), i got to work making a pair of coils work.
grabbed a module and cut the end coil area off, ripped the alu plate off the bottom, and gutted it.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/ignition/Imgp0625.jpg
i worked out what pins id need(the ones that goto each coil) and removed the rest. soldered up my wires, and globbed a heap of hotglue on it to stop anything coming astray
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/ignition/Imgp0624.jpg
i drilled some holes, welded some nuts under the wheel arch and mounted the coils to the car, came out pretty good. just need to get some leads made up to suit(using an old set of commodore leads for now, 3 are good, ones mega long)
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/ignition/Imgp0629.jpg
final setup. will run it as is for a week, and get a spare dizzy housing modified to remove the dizzy hole. was hoping to remove the oil sensor hole aswell, but not enough money to get the remote filter stuff sorted before taking dizzy off. oh well, a bung will do fine.
can spot the fan mount changes i did yesterday too, trialing it for now, but its raised low speed temps, and hasnt really changed higher speed temps. might go back to old shroud and a cooler thermostat.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/ignition/Imgp0633.jpg
uploading some vids, will take a while though.

ok, monday just gone, went to start her in the morning and nothing, ended up late for work(had to get a lift). got home, messed around with it, turns out i killed my circuit breaker(most likely that night, as it was working in the morning), and the crank sensor(note: dont go grinding any plastic off around the end of the sensor, not enough material, hits coil wires )
so i ordered another sensor(from an aussie car, ford, slightly diff mounting points), and a bigger battery, small one just wasnt cutting it with new ignition system, and bypassed circuit breaker(for now, ordering new one monday)). swapped the wires on the sensor and she fired up without hesitation today.
new battery(moved it to above axle, instead of behind it this time). just gotta clean up the area where the old box used to be. gotta get some cable protective stuff, and maybe reroute the cable somewhere else

picked up a replacement muffler today, coz the old one finally decided to shat itself on the way to work, its 90% broken around the back of it, and the mount that the last person put on was on the tailpipe, so it has broken from weight. got a couple new mounts to mount it properly tomorrow.

so not much happening lately, cars driving fine, just spending money on more upgrade parts and waiting for them to turn up.
this weekend though, i tried the modified dizzy housing after getting it welded again. it still leaks, so this time i slapped a bit of jb weld on it, and its only weeping a tiny bit now. hopefully it holds up for the next week or so, while i get iblown to make me a new housing, no half assing it this time, one piece billet plz.
also got dad to check the tappets(hasnt been checked since motor went in), and theyre fine. whilst playing under the bonnet, we noticed the alternator bracket was broken, so welded that up and its ok again now.
i should start playing with the timing soon, just gotta get the time to.
random engine bay shot, looks so much better with no dizzy. also took the old ignition module and wiring off.

so uhh, whilst collecting parts for the car today, i also collected a rabbit and a nail on the way home!! noticed the nail since it was tapping against my guard after hitting the rabbit, drop tyre off to tyre shop tomorrow and see if its fixable, hope so!!
the rabbit did a good job on the bumper, one big mashed area(probably where its head hit) and many other stress cracks around the area. looks like im gonna be rockin the steel bumper for a while, while i fix it(gives me a chance to put the chrome paint on too)
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/Imgp0729.jpg
chucked the 002's on for now, gonna have to take it easy on these, they break traction waaay too easily with the new motor
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/Imgp0731.jpg
now onto the good stuff!! ordered some more bits last thursday from the states, and theyre here already!! i got the correct rear rotors this time(see they bolt on :p), an oil temp gauge to replace the boost gauge in the dash, some russell proclassic braided hose, and a bunch of fittings. i'll be putting my oil cooler and remote filter on this weekend! and i ordered some better camber/toe adjusters for the rear, these weld to the subframe, instead of being an eccentric bush. much more adjustment.

made the adaptor for my oil cooler/remote filter today.
glad i went this way instead of the screw on adaptor.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/oil_cooler/Imgp0741.jpg
had to clearance the fittings to fit the allen head bolts, theres not much room to move, but it fits and bolts down(tried it on spare block out the back)
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/oil_cooler/Imgp0744.jpg
underside, gotta get some gasket paper and make my own gasket, stock one wont work. possibly couldve moved bottom one over a bit more to clear bolt, but i wasnt making another one. maybe oneday if i feel like getting iblown to machine me one up!! for now(unless it leaks) this one will do fine

overall, dropped the temp by about 15f. pretty good, just gotta check it for oil leaks throughout the week. had a couple of fittings i tightened up a bit after a test run, so far so good. see how it goes and next weekend i might install my oil temp gauge

theyre off a honda cbr1100 blackbird.
so far, ive bought smaller idle jets, need to adjust the screw for them though, too far in now. i need slightly smaller main jets, just havent got around to buying them. to start with, they were pretty much just whack em on and run, they ran very rich, but worked fine.
with the new motor, theyre working even better!!

so i finally test fit the cv adaptors i had my mate make today.
gotta drill the holes in the cv's out a tiny bit, i managed to get the pcd like .5mm too small, not a major thing, its easily fixed with a slightly bigger drill bit through the holes.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/diff/Imgp0894.jpg
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/diff/Imgp0895.jpg
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/diff/Imgp0900.jpg
the backing plates fit inside the adaptors with ample space to breathe
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/diff/Imgp0897.jpg
for the diff flanges, i had printed out a few measured pcd sheets, and tried lining up with the bolt holes on paper, but everything was off a bit. so i took a guess, and went with the pcd that nissans use, which is 5x114.3(the measurements id tested all came close to this, but nothing was 100%).
looks like nissan was smart, and i got it spot on!!

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/diff/Imgp0903.jpg
and since i dont have a spare control arm to bolt the outer adaptor to for testing, i slid it into the bolts on a spare e21 cv. the gaps only because its the hub side, not cv side. but it lines up perfect.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/diff/Imgp0904.jpg
and now the e21 is in the shed, have to tighten up the steering rack, which i now have the right tool to do it, not a botched up diy piece that would bend :p im also going to do the rear wheel bearings, and brake lines. i have a car i can use for getting to and from work, so i mght even start doing the new brakes and diff swap while its in there.

so i got bored and decided id tap out one of the front caliper brackets, and bolt it all up.
came up good, may need to skim the bracket a bit to center the disc some more. will see where it sits on the struts on the bmw, coz these are my spares, not cleaned or anything.
i had allowed for the ability to shim the bracket out to center the disc, but obviously my measurements werent spot on. not the end of the world though.

and some more playtyimes.
took the steering rack out today, going to fix the up and down movement of the pinion from when i first built it. the quickrack pinion was machined wrong, so i couldnt lock the bearing in place, so sitting still, the wheel would move a bit before the rack moved. its gotten a bit worse over the last few weeks, so time to fix it. going to source a thinner bearing, or get the pinion machined.
thought id take my suspension bits down for a looksee while the cars in the air and the wheels off.
looks pretty good. wont really know until i start mocking t up without the stock stuff there.
the control arms almost dead on for stock length with it screwed all the way in.

so we pulled the rear axles and bearings out today. this is the main reason for taking the car off the road, and im glad i did it now, and not later
the broken one is the outer bearing on the passenger side. its been broken for a while. the rest are pretty sloppy. theyve been changed at some stage in the cars 400,000+k life. 2 SKF, 1 FAG and one unbranded bearing. drivers side nut was on tiiiiiight, took a fair bit of heat and breaker bar to get that sucker off.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/diff/Image401.jpg
gotta clean the arms out before putting new bearings in, gotta chamfer the edge of the wheel hub to get the new rotors on, will do that next week when a new tool for the shed arrives
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/diff/Image402.jpg
and a test fit of my caliper bracket, so far so good. need the bearings done to check positions.
bracket bolted on no worries(had to remove the rear dust sheild though, not sure if ill put it back on with clearancing, front doesnt have any and has been fine)
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/brakes/Image404.jpg
and holding the rotor and caliper in place, since theres no axle to put it on :p (cant bolt caliper to bracket, iblowns apprentice tapped the holes the wrong size, gotta make em bigger, and gotta grind off a few mm of the flange the adaptors bolted to)

today i started removing my brake system, and started attacking the wiring to change to a better fusebox system in the glovebox.
plan is to hide as much wiring in the engine bay as possible
uh oh spaghettioohhhh
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/wiring/Imgp1008.jpg
took my HID ballasts out, will hide them and redo all the headlight wiring. no rust under fusebox YAY
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/wiring/Imgp1009.jpg
hopefully this will be the last time i remove the brake booster setup. gotta decide if i move the coilpacks or not, i welded mount nuts on the underside when i out them there. or go coil on plug if i can find some good coils, and sell the MSD coils, now that i have space.

so i did some more wiring stuff today, and moved the bonnet cable aswell. unfortunately, its just over an inch too short, so gotta get another one from work. took some brackets off the wheel arch, will have to grind and weld the holes/lumps left over. gotta weld up the hole left from the wiring grommet and fix a little bit of rust.
headlight wirings all out, ready to be replaced, gotta relocate and hook up the horns(theyre in the wrong spot now, need to be moved for brake cooling ducts ;)

machined down the steering pinion to fit the bearing and circlip, but the circlip i had on it is too big, and no idea where the original one is, so gotta get one of them aswell, easy job though. the hubs i have to take more material off than i thought, and being stainless, the lathe just doesnt wanna do the job, so ill drop e off to a local machinist today to trim them.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/wiring/Imgp1040.jpg
ordered some plugs last night that will allow me to run wires through the firewall for engine harness, which will make for pulling the motor out an easy task.

so some goodies turned up today
aluminum flywheel(with new bolts)
new brake master cylinders(original ones i decided were too big :p)
fittings to suit(for the remote reservoirs)
ireland engineering camber kit, mucho more camber adjustment for me!!
safety wire pliers
swaybar nylon bushes(2 sets, so if/when they flog out, i can swap em in straight away)
spherical bearings for future control arms(needed them to confirm measurements/angles)
stainless steel brake line, gotta make some new lines, so might as well add a bit of bling(couldnt find anything on ADR's and stainless line, if anyone knows, tell me)
inner rear wheel bearing seals, can finally get the wheel bearings done!!
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/Imgp1041.jpg
and i got some more supplies from work to keep going on the wiring.
got the fuse holders and relays done and mounted(i think theyre done, still need to test it all :p). miscalculated position of the relays, so had to move them over a bit. hole in the firewall is for battery terminal(its right where a welded bracket i dont need is, proving to be a pain to remove :p). once ive welded the hole from the old grommet, ill ziptie up all that wiring monster in the corner, so its all neat. would looooooooooooooooooooove to redo all the wiring in the car, but thats just a wee bit too huge of a job for this round.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/wiring/Imgp1044.jpg
and lhs guard wiring tied up, still waiting for ballasts so i can wire them up. gotta move onto rhs guard next. oh, and i found an old commodore bonnet cable that was more than long enough to reach in the new position, so bonnet now works again.

ok, so today i started welding my camber/toe adjusters onto my spare subframe after i pulled all the old swaybar and control arms off and cleaned most of the gunk off it.
ps. i still suck at welding, so im gonna get dad to finish it off.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/suspension/Imgp1060.jpg
and dad bought home some fuses and a new killswitch, so i threw them in before for a quick test of what wirings done. its good to see a populated fusebox!!(need to find other clear cover) top 4 fuses on the left are spares, rest are needed.

got my plugs today for the firewall, so if i can be bothered, i'll cut some holes and start wiring them up this week after work. still waiting for my slim HID ballasts, so i can finish up the headlight wiring.

ballasts turned up yesterday, got around to mounting them today, and got drivers side wiring all done. just have to get some short hid extensions, the new ballasts have a black box on the hid lead, which i want to mount so its not flopping around.

and passenger side, for sensors and anything else that goes into the engine bay.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/wiring/Imgp1072.jpg
and from inside, the flange is supposed to be on the outside, but i went inside, so taking the plug off the firewall is easier(read: for painting the engine bay in the future ;)) the wires from the wideband meter will get put on the plug too. might even move the module inside and extend the wideband sensor wires.

so i didnt do much today, had to do some other things.
i finished the passenger side light wiring, mounted the horns on the same side, and rewired the thermo fans(fuse and relay i integrated with the fusebox, so had to change some wires at the switch and hooked up with passenger side loom)
only one pic today. will mount the black boxes from the ballasts when my extensions arrive.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/wiring/Imgp1075.jpg
also started wiring the alternator and starter wires, unplugged all the sensor plugs ready to sort out where i want them. also cut the innovative LC-1 open, so i can extend the socket wires and mount the module inside.

so ive been lazy this week and havent done anything. the thoughts there, effort not so :p
i did receive some more bits from my mate yesterday, but forgot to bring em home.
so here they are: strut/stubaxle adapters for new custom control arms that are in the making. they will allow me to run a spherical bearing mounted inside a solid aluminum control arm for full adjustability. the spacers are to adjust roll center.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/brakes/Imgp1078.jpg
and the clutch master cylinder spacer. since the new pedalbox uses 2 master cylinders, theres not enough room for the stock clutch master to fit. so im running a wilwood one, and this spacer will allow it to bolt in the limited space left. it needs the face angled and holes drilled and tapped still. doing these myself to get it bang on(needs trial and error playing with the pedalbox).

my coil on plug bracket arrived today. just need to order some coils and plugs and make a harness. this will allow me to get the coil packs off the guard, and not have to run custom leads.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/ignition/Imgp1104.jpg
also got my rear hubs back from getting machined down, now the discs fit on them, so might try and get the wheel bearings in on the weekend and i can finally test out the rear caliper brackets.
Looking good dude! Will be good to see this thing in person one day in the future!

been busy with a new toy the last few weeks, picked up a e36 318is coupe for a daily, but been trying to get it ready for roady. thread here if you want a looksee (http://stanceworks.com/forums/showthread.php?p=262089)
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/cosmos/Imgp1145.jpg
today i decided to do work on the e21.
dad finished welding the subframe the other day for me, so i cleaned up the welds, made sure the bolts all spun without interference and threw some paint on it. will clean up the control arms, sway bar and bbs mounts(which are still holding up nicely after god knows how many years) and put them on soon.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/suspension/Imgp1156.jpg
threw some new wheel bearings in one control arm to test fit the caliper bracket and new brakes. need to machine 1mm off the face of the brackets. same as the front, i mustve messed up caliper measurements somewhere in all my 3d'ing to get both of them the same amount off, since id made allowances in the brackets for shims to center them. guess i was ~2mm off somewhere. least its not much material. going to take 1mm off the face where the caliper bolts too, bring the pad down down a bit, since its over hanging ~1mm also
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/brakes/Imgp1147.jpg
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/brakes/Imgp1148.jpg
i managed to get the bracket spot on with the ridge on the face of the control arm(didnt notice this originally, but i think ill chamfer the edge of the bracket just to be 100% sure its sitting flat)
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/brakes/Imgp1149.jpg
the handbrake arms clear the 15" wheel by ~2mm, this will be improved when the brackets get modified, but i'll have to be mindful of what 15" wheels i run in the rear.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/brakes/Imgp1152.jpg

so today i decided i might try and work off some of the delicious food from yesterday, and start hacking up my subframe to fit the skyline diff.
i cut the old diff mount off the chassis last week, which was in the way of getting the new diff up in there, got the diff up where i roughly wanted it and marked where it would sit(no pics, didnt think to).
dropped the subframe back out, and started cutting
first bits cut
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/diff/Image454.jpg
diff fits
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/diff/Image455.jpg
now i'll probably make the mounts for diff to subframe, so i can bolt it solid in place, then start clearancing and welding in plates to re-strengthen the front and clear the driveshaft bolts and speedo sensor wheel.

02-21-2011, 02:09 AM
so a big box turned up today, in it was a bunch of goodies from my mate
we have skimmed caliper brackets(i have to clearance some more on the rears, which i think ill clearance on the steel control arm as opposed on the aluminum mounts. its not much, but still.), skyline diff to e21 subframe adapters, and a bunch of stainless bolts for the simmons wheels for the e36.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/diff/Image554.jpg
ok, so inserts "press" fit in(read: bashed in with big hammer), fit perfectly. theyre NOT coming out any time soon. this is all bolted up with some spare bolts, which arent long enough.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/diff/Imgp1460.jpg

theyre off a cbr1100 from memory, i made up a manifold to bolt to the bmw manifold, had the injector holes welded, had a lokar throttle cable i made fit, converted to a carb sold state fuel pump and filter, hooked it up and it ran!! still playing with needle and jet sizes, jsut its a pita to get to them without pulling the whole lot off.
bought a new alternator the other day. mines fine, but this thing is same output, but half the size/weight.

so the old man and i played with the diff today, he welded the brackets up on tuesday, so it was just a matter of lining everything up, clearancing the subframe some more, then bolting it up.
here is how it sits(no idea how i managed to get the pic so damn blurry)
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/diff/Dscf6445.jpg
and the lot out, so i can take the diff off and reinforce the front section that we cut out to clear the diff flange.

today involved bashing around some 5mm plate(left over from seat rails) to reinforce the chunk of subframe i cut out to clear the flange. also filled some gaps with some thinner stuff. i let dad do all the welding, since i suck on the best of days :p
plated up
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/diff/Dscf6452.jpg
all bolted up again(rear bolts arent done up, gotta get some nylock nuts)
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/diff/Dscf6457.jpg
and not sure if i posted any pics of this a while ago, but one shot of one of the rear brakes bolted up. have to assemble the other sides axle and new bearings still
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/diff/Dscf6458.jpg
have to move the fuel pump and filter, get the control arms bolted up, decide which lsd center i want to go and get that in, then start measuring up new driveshaft lengths.

while waiting for parts/machining i decided to do everything else to it :p
today the wheel bearings are finally done. still have to finish some clearancing on one of the brake caliper brackets, but thats easy stuff
i threw my non adjustable nolathane bushes in yesterday too, the old adjustable ones will go to good use in a mates e30. and yes the control arms need a cleanup, gotta grab some degreaser from work.

so i received some more goodies in the mail today, some brake pipe fittings, trumpets and a new speed sensor for the diff(couldnt find one specifically for the diff on ebay and was too lazy to call wreckers, genuine, etc. so i did some measurements and found this honeywell vr sensor on ebay for a grand total of $20 delivered. will test it out when i get a chance. if it makes the speedo needle move itll work, as the speedo is programmable. if not, im only losing out on $20 :p
picked up the jenvey carbon trumpets for a goood price(read just over half price of what they are on the website). unfortunately i think my bike carbs are too close together at the moment to fit them without cutting, so i might look at spacing the carbs a bit.
also pictured is some brake fittings i received a couple weeks ago, but they werent worthy of a post by themselves :p

been doing some measuring up and designing for a bracket for the new alternator, today i decided to make it, to see where it would sit/if i got measurements right.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/wiring/alternator/DSCF6570.JPG
and in the car(only bolted in one position at the moment, need longer bolts for the other mount points, and one point i have to tap a thread into.(if i use it)
ignore the kinked oil hose, i think ill need to get a 120deg fitting since ive had to move the hose to clear the alternator

received my lsd center today, for the skyline diff.
went for a obx helical lsd. obx are known for low quality rip off products, but ive done a whole heap of reading on their lsd's, and it seems with some attention to areas the manufacturers ignored, some new preload washers and some loctite, these things can take a beating and then some!
unit straight out of the box
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/diff/Image786.jpg
ripped the casing apart, took almost no effort to loosen the bolts(imagine that over time inside the diff, KAPOW once one loosens off enough)
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/diff/Image785.jpg
and one of the flaws in the outer casing, not a biggie, but potential area for metal to come loose and chunk around the gears
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/diff/Image788.jpg
so im going to give it all a bath, deburr the casing and bevel the edges of the gears that need it, essentially taking away any spots for metal to chip away from. then ill put the new washers in and loctite the shit outta the bolts.
then ll get a bloke dad knows to throw it in the diff and shim it if need be

i wrote out a list of everything i need to do on this thing to get it on the road again, and im going to tick each thing off as its done.
today i worked on getting the clutch master cylinder lined up and bolted on. adjusted the angle a bit more, tapped some threads, bolted it up for test fit.(ignore the brake masters, i cbf bolting them up, its a prick of a job :p)
i finally broke down and modified the firewall a bit to make it fit though, original plan of the build was to modify the firewall cutout as little as possible/preferably not at all, so i folded the lip of metal back on itself around the bottom of the adapter.

so just need to finish the front left line, and make the clutch master line, and brakes are finished being plumbed.
then ill flush the lines of any debris, and bolt up the rotors and calipers.

oh, also need to sort out a bracket for my reservoirs now too.

stole the special crimp pliers from work so i could do some wiring today.
for now ive hooked up the reverse wires, starter wire and the alt wire into the top plug, and the oil pressure sender into the bottom plug. need to decide where im routing wires before i do the rest of the sensors.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/wiring/Image906.jpg
i hooked up a temp starter power wire, so i could kick it in the guts. started first go after the fuel pump primed up, gotta strip and clean the carbys though, somethings sticking and its overflowing fuel
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/wiring/Image908.jpg
pulled the center console, speakers, and old radio wiring aswell.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/wiring/Image907.jpg
aaaand i swapped the overflow bottle over to the drivers side, now that theres no brake booster in the way. shortens the hose and empties the passenger side a bit more

had the day off today, so i slacked off for the morning, then went out to do some more wiring.
i changed my plan of attack a bit, and moved the oil pressure wires upto the top plug, then added oil temp and water temp wires. so now top plug is all gauges and starter/alt/reverse. bottom plug is now free for ecu only wires.
as you can see, i also taped up the harness to the engine. will run the alternator wire when i get the new bracket installed

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/wiring/Image914.jpg
and i found a few m4 allen head screws lying around so i test fit them, just need more now. theyre the perfect size.

so this is where my fuel pump and filter used to sit, right in the warpath of the new diff output flange
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/diff/DSCF6457.JPG
today i decided to move it to a safer place. didnt want to prime properly here, but the battery is quite flat. *just had a quick read, and i knew there was a certain way im not supposed to mount the pump, which is the way ive mounted it *facepalm*.
looks like ill be flipping it the other way, and just change some of the fittings and extend the outlet hose
The fuel pump should be mounted with the outlet above the inlet. This will help with eliminate vapor lock issues. Never located the pump so the outlet is below the inlet. Horizontal mounting will not effect fuel delievery performance

got my alternator bracket from my mate today. test fit it when i got home, so far so good. i got one hole slightly off, but that can be fixed with some elongation, gotta drill another hole i couldnt get exact measurements for, and gotta get mate to remake a part that he/we/i/probably me stuffed up
yeh, alternator wont quite bolt in there...
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/wiring/alternator/Image920.jpg
so this is how it looks with the alt on(sans front bottom piece)
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/wiring/alternator/DSCF6913.JPG
and a few bolted up shots. i realised when i mocked up my first bracket, that one of the lower timing cover holes isnt tapped, so ill have to pull the crank pulley off and tap a thread.
belt alignment looks good. real test will be starting it up
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/wiring/alternator/DSCF6910.JPG
have to machine up some spacers for these 2 bolts, and get some longer bolts

so today i did a bit. wired up and tested the new alternator, well didnt hook up the charge light, but its a 1 wire alt, so doesnt need it, but it charges fine, just need to get a longer belt from work. my mate is remaking the front lower piece this week for me.
pulled my front and rear bumpers, and dropped the front guards back on with a couple bolts(was sick of seeing them on the roof)
then it got the better of me, ive been trying to work out a clean way to mount the brake fluid reservoir, but had to clear the throttle cable bolted to the firewall.
so i tacked on a bit of metal to the pedal inside the car and bolted the lokar cable through an original hole(not sure why it was there, just was :S)
adjusted the pedal stop a bit, and i have full travel. no billion linkages and swivelly bits now, just pedal>cable
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/brakes/Image935.jpg
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/brakes/Image938.jpg

finished welding up the pedalbox yesterday and threw a (very crappy) coat of silver on it.
today i bolted the pedalbox and master cylinders in(taking the brake masters out requires removing the pedalbox, thats gon suck!!)
still need to sort out the reservoir mounting and plumbing, but thats easy

did some more work, havent had this much progress in ages, feels good
tested the remote brake bias adjuster to see if it cleared the accelerator pedal with everything at max travel, just touches the accel pedal with accel and brake pedals to the floor, but its flexible, so doesnt matter, and im not going to adjust it at full throttle and brake anyway ;)
also cut down the brake pedal to fit a manual rubber
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/brakes/Photo%208-01-12%205%2009%2026%20PM.jpg
so i routed the cable and made a bracket for the knob. nice and solid. notice i removed the radio and center console, will be mounting a fire extinguisher on the tunnel, need one for doing local track/hillclimb days
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/brakes/Photo%208-01-12%204%2036%2041%20PM.jpg
and i spaced the clutch pedal over a bit more(spacer is a cut down chain tensioner, perfect fit ;)), clearance shot between steering column and brake bias adjustment bar. now i just have to sort out linking the clutch master, just a rose joint and bolt welded to pedal will work fine. id use the old setup, but its worn and the master is imperial thread now.

found my spare pedal rubbers, screwed the brake masters into the pedal setup(also probably needs adjusting), threw the brake light switch on and took a photo
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/brakes/Photo%205-02-12%2016%2034%2017.jpg
clutch pedal is ~1/2 inch further away from brake pedal than stock now, which isnt a biggy for me. trying to decide if i setup a stopper for the clutch master at rest, stock didnt have one, have to move my full depressed stopper over a bit too, again will worry about that when fluid is done

With the wing, what'd you use to remove the old silicone? I bought a 2nd hand BBS wing for my e30 but the studs are missing and I sort of don't want to drill into my boot :p so was hoping I could clean off the old glue and stick the wing with sikaflex alone.. :-/

this is 9.5", cbf working out offset. using a 4" inner barrel as the outer for testing. once i dial out camber, it should sit pretty nice with a chunky tyre.
sitting all the way down with current known camber

jacked up a bit to even out camber. stick for rough idea on gap to flare
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/wheels/PLS/Img_1054.jpg
40mm between 5.5" inner and control arm, means i can bump it up to a 7" inner barrel(with mm to spare :p), hello 11" wheel!!
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/wheels/PLS/Img_1049.jpg
wheels clear the calipers nicely, unlike the simmons, so i wont need any spacers. the handbrake lever on the caliper does graze the barrel when its all the way out, so if new barrels dont clear them, i'll get iblown to make me up some new levers that will clear.
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/wheels/PLS/Img_1052.jpg
and now the front. 8.5" et-19ish. plenty of clearance from the tie rod, not sure if i'll get a 1/2" bigger outer and leave camber or not yet. if i do, i might use the 4" inner barrels, or maybe buy a 4.5-5" inner.
quick shot of one sitting on the car, rain started more constant, so its not bolted on.
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/wheels/PLS/Img_1057.jpg
front on shot, again, once i dial out camber, the 3" lip should sit nice.

so the e21s been outside since april, because i needed space in the shed to do the m3 motor, and then we were gonna clean up the shed.... well, thats finally happened(mostly), so now theres enough space to get her back in there!!
also started her up for the first time in ages(think i last got it running when we pulled the car out), running a bit rough/misfiring, but stale fuel and dry carbs will do that. need to drain the tank and throw in some new plugs and such sometime. next thing is to get this damn diff sorted so it can move.

decided to have a play with the e21 today, put the quick ratio rack back together, when i originally built it, the pinion gear was machined incorrectly, stopping me from putting a circlip in. i left it out at the time, and it felt ok, but oncein the car, it had some light up and down movement, which resulted in freeplay at the steering wheel.
so i ended up pulling it apart ages ago, machined down some of the pinion for the bearing to slide on further, but the grooove for the circlip was still too small. today i decided to just thin down the circlip a bit.
all back together, and it feels good. will know for sure once its in the car.
boring picture :p
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/Img_1412.jpg
and i cleaned all the random bits of junk out of the interior, tried putting the glovebox back in, but some wiring and the relays get in the way now, will have to trim the glovebox a bit, but thats no biggy.
need to rip the seats out and redo the floor, got some surface rust at the front, from when it was sitting outside for so long.
really cant wait to be driving this thing again

did some more today, removed the old alternator bracket and worked out new bolt lengths, then i made a new bottom spacer for the alternator bracket, because i cant find the other one!! also worked out bolt lengths for bracket
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/wiring/alternator/Img_1414.jpg
and decided id redo the wiring above glovebox.
this is how it looked when id finished it last time, just a big bundle of wires in one spot. its because i hadnt done them to the right lenghts, and was a tad over wiring at that point.
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/wiring/Imgp1044.jpg
so i stripped the tape off today, and will start shortening them all maybe next weekend

diff arrived yesterday, pulled the back cover off today, and was greeted with this
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/diff/Img_1423.jpg
for those that have no idea what theyre looking at, its a s15 helical diff center. so looks like ill be throwing this diff straight in after i measure up the output shafts so i can get some cv adapters made.
ill try and sell off the obx lsd, or throw it in the cupboard as a backup.

haha, cheers. the blue corners were a "why the hell not" decision. i wont be rocking them all the time, only for shits and giggles at car shows/etc.

yesterday i spent measuring up the output shaft bolt pattern and replicating it in my 3d app, so i can get my mate to make new adapters for me. today i found my old adapters, and threw the 5 bolt pattern on top of the new one, to find the new bolt pattern will actually fit on the old one and clear the old holes. so now i gotta send them to my mate to do a redrill for me.
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/diff/1.jpg
i also pulled the old diff out of the car, so i could raid the front mount bushes off it, which were in tight(steel on steel, silly idea), dad managed to break them free, so i threw some antiseize on them and banged them in the new diff, along with the rear mount.
now i just need to thow some fresh oil in it and put it back in.

got the bolts i needed to finish the alternator bracket today, so after work i bolted it on. just need to sort out a slightly longer belt, and an allen head bolt for the adjuster.
its held on with 2 bolts and one nut to the timing cover, i cant get a m10 tap down to the lower 4th spot, which i'll do if it decides to flext at all(it really shouldnt), or when the motor or radiator comes out next.

also bought some diff oil, might put that in tomorrow

my driveshaft/diff adapters came back from my mate today, along with some bits for the 36 and some hubcentric rings for dads car
so now i have both 2x3 and 5 stud nissan driveshaft patterns on the adapters, so diff options are expanded should i need to :p
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/diff/Img_1562.jpg
seems i done good on the measuring, coz they bolted up bang on!! just need to get some of those spacer/double washer things for the commodore cv's

i loctited the adapters onto the diff today, and started reinstalling the diff. looks like i'll need to drop the subframe to get it fully bolted back up, and to do some clearancing for the front diff flange.
might be able to put my pump and filter back up where they were too, just move them a touch.(they worked fine wherte they were, i moved them for clearance of the driveshaft, which now looks like it should be fine
next job is to cut up the commodore shafts and work out new length for each side
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2301805/bmw/blue/diff/ref/Img_1596.jpg
need to get some of those washer/shim things that go under the bolts on the cv's too sometime.
