So I'm starting to get the photography bug and would really like to invest in a nice DSLR. I'm definitely a beginner so I'll be learning with this camera, but at the same time I don't want to have to upgrade anytime soon. What would be your suggestions? I'll be looking to spend somewhere in the $500-$700 range and I am quite a fan of Canon, but I know Nikon is right up there. Thanks in advance!

Nikon.

I say buy a used D80, or D200 if you can find one.

Right now I'm looking to buy new since I can finance it through Best Buy. Would a D60 be a poor choice? It's currently on sale for $570.

Well, I ended up going for it. Got the D60 for $569 interest free for 6 months.

And DAMN...memory has gotten CHEAP. $30 for 8 gigs??? I had no idea.

Haha, ya. I knew if I thought about it too long I wouldn't have done it. But with 6 months no interest, how could I lose? I have A LOT to learn though. Should be a lot of fun.
My first meal with the camera. It was delicious.

Just so I know I'm not trippin, your dog has 3 legs, correct?

Bong's definitely can make a room reek from heavy use :shifty

:rofl at both comments. My dad was the one that said the bong quote...haha! And yes, 3 legs. She fought a UPS truck and didn't do so well some years back.

Canon ******. Canon > Nikon

Both WIN over any other brand.

Should have got a Canon! Make sure you pay it off in 6 months or that interest will bite you in the ass. And good choice buying at Best Buy! That's where I work selling cameras :)

BeLIEVE me, its like 19% after 6 months. It'll be paid off...haha. :D

And so far, I'm very satisfied with the Nikon. I just need to get to taking more pictures and getting some kinks out of the editing software I downloaded.

D80! I got one & I love it... though, a D300 is the bees-knees, if you can afford it.

Very nice man. One thing you'll want to do it upgrade your lens. Those kit lenses are good to loearn on, but once you get your skills built up and become more comfortable with the camera you'll want to try other lenses. Plus those kit lenses leave a lot to be desired in clarity.

As far as bodies go I like both brands. Both make exceptional cameras. The only thing is I believe Canon's glass is far superior. The range of lenses they offer and the quality of picture they produce is just win.
