Who has steelie experience with them?
Part of me wants to order up some of those, but i'm a little hesitant as i hear that they don't balance well and are heavy?
Then I just have to figure out pricing. I dont see a reason to go small with my early rear arches..

They are steel wheels, of course they are heavy and shitty. You serious?

Ok well maybe i should reword this:
I know theyre steel and shitty, they are steelies. But what im after is more like how shitty, unbalanced and heavy?

DR steelies would be legit dumped and poked.
Stephen

That would be my plan, once i have coils sorted out, and some stretch

A few of the guys who own the stalker's run them. IIRC there were some small issues with the balancing, but it wasn't awful. For the price you can't expect too much.
Stephen
06-07-2009, 04:25 AM
Yeah, and i wouldnt. Theres little in that price range aside from sportmax at that point

I think it depends what size and bolt pattern, but the starting point is somewhere near 80 a wheel I believe.

Yeah... for 80 bucks they could eat all the cold cuts in my fridge, I'd still like them. As for balancing. Make sure the guys mount the tires correctly. That yellow and red dot on the tire is there to put opposite the valve stem. If they goof that up it gets harder to balance.

I never said I didnt like the look. I just don't expect them to be light performance wheels.

Man $80/wheel is appetizing. I wonder how they look in stupid low offsets. Hmmmm.
NVM, thought they made 16s as well.
Carry on.
EDIT 2: I found one guy who said he has 16s. Hmm. Need to do some research.
Check these bad boys out:

Edit in respons to mike's edit: Theyre under custom. They do as tall as 18" and as wide as one can fathom. Don't know the pricing, might have to call em up. But cant be too bad

i wouldnt get anything larger than 16" for a street car. i emailed them awhile back and they gave me an approximate weight on a 17." its going to be ridiculously heavy with a tire.

No doubt- I'm leaining towards 15" right now, 16" tops.

To be fair though, 17" is where they start to make them "army" spec or whatever, so they're heavy as shit. The 16s will be heavy im sure, but i think the 17s are suposedly made different, so much heavier than the 16s.

Yeah, I know their 16x10 truck wheels are 34lbs. :eek

Austin- think I can set the frame down and poke 16s? or should I go 15s?
driggers.a
06-07-2009, 03:17 PM
I think that if you went 15's you'd have gap with the car on the ground. 16's would be like .5-1" off the ground.

yea, i figured. it would have been pretty cool to achieve the look on that size. i looked into other brands such as crager, but the wheels are also heavy. a 17x9 is ~38lbs without a tire.lol.

lol. Thats pretty bad. I'm a little dissapointed the 16x10s are so heavy, i kinda wanted some 10s out back

That's their truck wheel, I don't think the standard steelies are that heavy.
Stephen

Oh, ok. Well if you go for this it'd be intersting to hear what you say. Im kinda considering some 16s in maybe a flat white or something.

I used to run them on my circle track cars. Never had an issue with balancing as we were not allowed to run wheel weights. For some reason, they don't like small pieces of lead that can come off and kill someone in the stands. Even with no weights and slicks, I never noticed a shimmy due to them not being balanced. Definately some strong wheels. I think I still have a couple around the shop if you want to take a look at them when you get here tomorrow Mike.

I came pretty close to buying a set of 17x8.5" and 17x9.5" before I bought the Boyds. But what deterred me was a similar thread on Eurghetto that had some poor reviews on DR. They are basically wheels that are meant to be disposable, and at that price and the fact that they are made for open wheel racing it's not surprising. The quality is supposedly very sub-par for a street car.
If they were not my only set of wheels I'd probably still get a set. But at this point I was looking for a set of wheels to be my "only" set and the DR's didn't seem to be a good fit for that.

I hear you, and that makes sense. I'm not too worried about it- if anything these will be disposable- I have no idea what I'd run them on after this car.

I read on some forum that you want to tell DR that you want to use them for street use. From what I've read they apparently make racing wheels with less care... but if they know the wheels are for street use they make them stronger... I may be wrong...

You would think that racing wheels would be stronger than street wheels.

I know, that's what confused me whenever I read it... I think it's in a thread on bf.c...
Anyway, the only think i could figure is that for a track car, BFHing a rim back into shape to finish a race would be common place. I remember back when I was researching rims for my jeep that was one of the good things about steel...

I thin that sounds right. Less to worry about on a track as far as things that can happen to a wheel.

I asked one of the guys on r3v whos on his 3rd set of DRs, says no problems with vibration or damage running them on the street.
Lookin forward to seeing them on the rustbucket ;)

I tried searching for the thread on bf.c, but didn't find it, maybe it was in the depths of one of the Stretched Tire Galleries... Either way, I don't think it would hurt to note when ordering that you plan to street the wheels...
