99.999999999% of japanese vip cars are static (well, the ones that didn't have factory air. even then, cats change them out -- witness the youzealand body coilover kit for w220 equipped with abc hydraulics). j-complete doesn't have an air setup in their catalog, so i'm assuming this one is static also (their coilover setup is balllinnn')

I feel the same way about BMW's oddly (except I don't really like them unmodified either). My wife worked at BMW's corporate offices in Melbourne, Australia when I met her and she knew I was a car guy and kept trying to impress me with BMW stuff - it just didn't work. In my head, they are about in the same class as Opel cars. Otherwise I like basically something from any non-American carmaker.

Not trying to instigate here; but you do realize that much of the engineering that made your car the smooth, dynamic, and engaging driver that it is was red-blooded American engineering, right?

Don't get me wrong, I respect all cars, the engineering that goes into them and any example of a cleanly modified car - regardless of make. There just isn't an emotional tie for me on some brands/models.

For example, if I had a new Mustang, I'd opt for the smallest powerplant (diesel would be cool), shave the engine bay, smooth out the body and do a German stanced-out theme with some classic Work wheels or something. Then I would take it to American car shows just to see people's negative reactions. :) I do like to go against the grain a bit and that is why I've been into Volvos, have a VW that no one in the US ever modifies and bought the Jaguar last year.

Understandable, we all have our ins and outs. If I had an S197, I'd build the Coyote (5.0 DOHC) and drop it on a set of nice-fitting wheels. The build would certainly have euro influences, I'd just go for the thumpin' V8:alright. I think we have pretty similar tastes:D Heck, both of my cars have been things that virtually nobody modifies, and I outwardly have a crush on a car that many on this forum have never even heard of or seen:rofl

If you're referring to the thread as a whole, there is more than one way to skin that cat.

1. They were unreliable (Not my choice)

2. Many who owned them didn't know how to properly maintain a car developed with engineering as different to the Yanky/Kraut engineering as that of the Brits. They also have quirks that differ from those common in their North American or German counterparts. This highlights the problem. Since they are different, many are new to/ uncomfortable with resolving the issues, which in turn exacerbates them.

If you're referring to the car in question (the CDW27-based X-Type), you could not be farther from the truth in the land of the British Big Cats. The X-Type is one of the most contemporary and well-developed models Jaguar has churned out in decades. It involves the artfully simplistic nature of an American design blended seamlessly with the smoothness and attention to detail of a modern British machine. It's Ford-derived parts (admittedly a sweeping majority) are of the best the chassis had to offer, and are beautifully highlighted by the thoughtful and tasteful touch of the Brits who so proudly branded the car with their name.

The CDW-based X-Type was a smooth, buttery sporting sedan with the unmistakably British outward appearance of classic Jaguar styling, and the heart of a true predator. It boasted impressive power numbers for its class and time; a world-class AWD system; and a chassis strong and balanced enough to enter, apex, and exit any corner with confidence. It did all of this while still carrying the typical Jaguar panache that we have all come to know and love.

Thanks! After some introspection, I've figured out why I dislike BMWs in general (I like E30 M3's though for some reason). I was the victim of elitist banter from my brother and many others as I grew up with VAG cars and I've seen so many people with attitudes like BreakMyWallet over the years of showing cars and competing in IASCA car stereo competitions. Now my wife (who worked for BMW Corp) will see anyone with an E34/E36 or newer BMW and say things like "wow, they must have a lot of money" and as many times as I say if I sold her Eurovan (worth maybe $22k or so now) I could buy her a half dozen used E34s, it doesn't register with her. Again, I respect them and they are great performing cars, look nice on paper and I love any clean car regardless of make. Edit: Opels I've just personally always found ugly, like most modern Pontiacs, American Generals or most American and Korean cars from the 1980s and early 1990s. Plus Opel is the arch enemy or VW among German enthusiasts - aka what I grew up with.

Off my introspection soapbox and back on topic - anyone care to photoshop these two? I love them even at monster truck height:

that XJ looks pretty nice, but also looks stock.

that XK, fucking yuk, whats up with the STRUT grill and everything being color matched.

I agree about BMW, anything post Bangle era is meh to me too. I never had the desire to own one. But then again back when I was a VW boy I never taught I'de own a Benz either (I was hardcore anti-automatic, now I love my slushbox). As for Ople, going up in the 90s, the 70s style Manta's and Ascona's where one of my favorites and the Calibra was my dream car till I jumped ship to VW and worshipped the corrado.

The 70s opel are some of the most beaurifull european cars to me.

Hey fellas. Even though I have always loved Jags (got it from my pops) Classics in paticular. I currently don't own any of my own. poking around craigslist I came across these two.

75

If I werent buying a house right now and I'd jump on one of these. Both are interesting the 78 with a corvette engine and that the 75 I dont have to smog anymore.

Anyhow figured someone here could give these a good home. sadly I cant right now. :(

I don't know why, but I watched the whole video. I'm in awe and disgust at the same time. At least the rest of this car (white Accord I mean) looks clean.

I wonder if part of my problem with the lambo Jag monstrosity above it the sheer amount of compound in the panel gaps. I've never seen it that bad and I used to get all of my cars repainted for show.

some of these look good, it's crazy.

Not sure about other Jags (X-types, etc.), but my friend has owned his new since 2001, Jaguar S-Type 4.0, drove it through highschool, only has like 80,000, babies it, and I swear to god, it's the biggest pile of shit, plastic pieces fall off, side markers fall off, car overheated back in like 2005 with us like at school and couldn't go home, no offense to anyone, and not saying they're all like that but, omg it's a pile. :rofl I guess I wanted to say this because of that rant you made about bmw.

I don't recall saying bmws were of questionable quality. x and s types are known to have crap transmissions and awd systems. they use the same components (jatco) as vw, but the rear bias makes them even weaker. 2004 and newer received some updates and are supposedly better. I guess I'll find out.

Michael Star
12-12-2010, 08:33 PM
2003.5 S-Types got the better trannies but there are still issues. Mine has the lurch which is kinda annoying.

I've had both BMW (01 540i/6) and now a Jag (03 STR) and there are pros and cons to both.

The 4.0s sucked major, as did the 5 speed autobox. The 4.2 is a much better motor along with the 6speed autobox. Of course the best is when you get it supercharged, but I am a bit bias.

I like the mostly pictured exexpat car and one of the "J-Complete" cars...the others arent very nice IMHO.

I think its because Jags look good with a nice drop, wheels.... and maybe a subtle lip. Anything else destroys the lines and just makes it look like you're trying to hard.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm finally thinking of starting a build of my own. My father had a 1990 V12 XJS, that was given to me years ago after being parked for 4 years. I had it on the road 2 seasons ago, but I was unable to get it properly sorted before needing something for more of a daily. I went on to a 2003 Acura 3.2 CL-S 6-Speed, and now an M5. I have had the itch to now pull the XJS out of the garage and start a build.
I know the inboard rear suspension will likely make things rather difficult. Does anyone know of any air ride kits? The car itself isnt in terrible shape, and I think it would make a great build platform, and be quite unique at the same time. Any info would be great. Ive done some hunting and cant find too much info.
Thanks again, and ill post up some pics of it in the garage as soon as I get a chance.

It looks better with faulty air springs and the status message is classic!

Makes me want an 04-09 XJ. I have a thing for Jaguars with ugly wheels and not very low for having bags, so it would suit me perfectly. :D
