Mike Burroughs' '85 535i : Resurrected
One of our staff members, Mike Burroughs, has brought his once-thought-dead E28 back to life.
Here’s a bit of history-
Mike bought this E28 in November of 2007- and went quite out of the way to do so. From Nashville, TN, Mike set out to South Carolina to trade his ‘89 325i for the 535i you see before you.
No pictures exist of it as it was when he got it home, but the following morning he had her cleaned up and sitting on some Borbet Type As:

The start of the adventure.
It wasn’t long before the car was sitting on Ground Control Coil-overs:

Gettin' lower.
… and that’s where the “normal” mods stopped. Mike soon followed up his drop with a complete re-design of the car.

Rust is not a Crime
Between a rusted hood, some WIDE HRE 504s (17×9.5 et-9 and 17×10.5 et+5), green bumpers and a custom made roof-rack, the car took on a totally new attitude. Of course, the same day the car was posted online, Performance BMW magazine hopped on the chance to do a feature.

Rust still isn't a crime.
Of course Mike wanted to keep it “fresh”, so he swapped back to his black hood, removed the rack, and picked up some gold RS198s.

Black Gold
And then of course some highlighter-yellow RZs-

RC-car, anyone?
And lastly, back to the HREs with a cleaned-up look:

Sleek.
And then, while on loan to someone else, the car met it’s demise

The End...
Or did it?

What’s next? Only Mike knows.

HOW DO YOU GET IT TO RUST SO EVEN ?
I am mesmerized by this car. The rust is captivating. I would love to speak to the person who created this masterpiece. What is the drive train? Views of the interior? As one asked before how did you get the rust to be so uniform?

No matter what disguise this cars in its just damn awesome!
i hear if you strip it to metal you can rub it down with acid and it will rust like that, then just let nature take its course
im wondering about doing something like this to my car, is it just to sand down the hood and let the rain do the rest? or is it something more that needs to be done to get a good look on it?
Mike said on a few forum posts he used peroxide and possibly something else I am forgetting after he stripped all the paint off.
No this is not a natural “let the raid do the work” rust job
I saw it in person at SOTU, the only thing that even cam close to the uniform rust was that one chopper by Jesse James….
peroxide, salt and vinegar
absolutely state of the art!
Piece of art! Amazing car and amazing story ;d
